from my senior portrait session this past sunday. such a great kid. as i told his parents, they made an awesome human.



friday, i'm starting work on short mini documentary on the guy that is doing my back tattoo. really looking forward to that.

 

Very nicely done. His parents know this, however I also know they really appreciated hearing that. Great job!

 

personal work. been sitting on this a long time. feels good to have it started. still making a few tweaks here and there on the color but figured i'd share anyway.

the practice never ends...



roxy needed a submission for grishko ballet shoes so we came up with this. first time out using a gimbal and i'm pretty impressed. definitely need some more practice but it's going to allow for moves that weren't possible hand held. looking forward to mounting it on the truck...

 

roxy's ballet studio put on the nutcracker over the weekend. bitter sweet for her since this was her last big performance with the studio. made a little behind the scenes film along with shooting stills all weekend.

 

went over and checked out the denver zoo lights last night. pushing the limits on the camera just a bit but made it work.

 

been working hard on my filmmaking skills. i wouldn't say business is booming, not yet, but it's growing steadily. some wedding films. some promo/marketing films. here's a few personal films from the past 6 months or so..

little bit of cleanup still to go but for my first foray into compositing with motion, it's coming out almost slightly halfway decent.

 

still crawling my way up the learning curve on this compositing stuff. definitely feeling a bit like sisyphus. this is far from perfect but as a learning exercise it was well worth it.



trying to wrap my head around blender using a few models from sketchfab as well as this motionvfx plugin for motion. getting things animated, lit and imported into motion is a bit of a task. not working the way i want it to but i think it's a codec/color space issue. need to try a few things.



doing a lot of trial by error and reading apple docs. for whatever reason, there are not a lot of tutorials on motion. it's all after effects. from what i've learned, there's no need for me to switch. i also don't want to give adobe any more money than i have to. i just have to get through these first through blocks.

 

just finished up an editing job for 350 colorado. i have no political bias with them but, i do believe in what they are doing. especially, since my day job puts me in some rather nasty places environmentally.



it was a little weird just doing the editing but a nice change of pace. quite a few rounds of back and forth with revisions but they were super easy to work with. only a few of the clips are actually mine. most were collected from volunteers at the specific events. will probably do more work for them in the future both filming and editing.

I fiddled with it back when I did photography (cannon 40D and 70D) I stopped the photographer stuff and went with Corperate business instead, but it was stupid fun to playing with the videos and put them together. I actually got into enjoying the video builds just as I was backing out of photography so I really only did it for personal videos.
I draw a lot and have always had an artistic ark, but the video making was always a lot of fun.

some promo work that i had started before the world went sideways. we didn't get a chance to really finish it but they asked me to put together what i had. in the end it worked out. they want to work on more stuff once everything calms down.

quite a few others in the pipeline too.

 

i've been working lately on capturing better audio. first test of many to come. audio was captured using a matched stereo pair of sE8 microphones in a XY configuration. for their price point, i'm pretty impressed. of course, i would love to have some AEA ribbon mics but all in due time. edit, grade and audio mix done in resolve.

the are other microphone placements i need to experiment with, such as, a-b, mid-side, blumlein and ortf. i also need to play around with sending audio directly to my rack mixer versus the mixpre 10 i used in this video. i'll definitely have more control over the sound with the rack mixer.

yes, the piano is a bit of tune. yes, roxy flubbed a few notes. but, overall, i'm happy with the result. the captured audio feels like it does when you're standing in the living room and that was the goal. the real test comes later this week as i'll be doing a live recording session of a jazz band.

 

i've added some new skills to round out the production company aspect that i'm going for these days. yesterday was the first real test. interviewed a drummer and captured a few minutes of him playing. this is a new beast for me...
