    Everything. Literally.
So I’m trying to find a newsed car for my mom, and I have a few stipulations.
    -Japanese, either Yota or Nissan
    -1 owner
    -clean title (obviously)

So I came across this 2004 Xterra. Canary yellow. Super clean. 115k, 1 owner, clean car fax/title, ALL the maintenance records, rust free, new tires, dealership was asking $7900, 86ish after tax and title. Talked the owner down to $7400, out the door for 8g even.

Gonna have the Mother test drive it tomorrow and probably move on it if she digs it.

I’m just wondering if anyone on the forum has ever owned an Xterra or has any feedback, good or bad..?
8000 is definitely more than I wanted to spend, but after doing some homework on Xterra’s And their resale, life span when maintained properly and the fact that they are no longer in production, it’s not too bad I guess.

Disclaimer- I was hoping for a 4R, but with their resale value being so high, I couldn’t find anything local in my price range that was any newer than like, 2000.
Damn you Toyota, and your quality craftsmanship.
One day I will own one of your magical automobiles.

    ...oh, wait.

    Thanks for the input...

My aunt had one that she used for her business. She had it for around 10 years and well over 100k on it and had zero complaints.

    A co worker has one.

Things to look for or expect:

    - windows in doors roll up mechanism can be an issue.

    - front driveshaft is tough to rebuild the first time. The u-joints are impregnated with plastic. All you have to do is heat up the joint and melt the plastic. No big deal, and Driveshaft Specialists by Drake power plant can hook you up, or come over and have beers and we can knock it out. Bring beers...and not that cheap shit like Coors or Bud Light.

    - Rear axle assembly, ring and Pinion can be an issue. We had to swap one out on my buddies. I’m not sure how well he maintained his drivetrain though. This was also at 190k miles on the SC version.

    - Exhaust manifold on drivers side is prone to cracking from what my friend said. His was replaced.

    Things that are good:

    - very reliable.
    - front wheel bearings are serviceable. I almost shit myself when replacing brakes on my friends Xterra. So no unit bearing assembly.
    - I like the interior and how it was build for outdoor play.

We had one and it had over 250k miles on it before a deer decided to total it for us. Only problem we had was one of the exhaust manifolds cracked. Replaced it and that one cracked as well. Very reliable though. I thought it was terribly underpowered but the wife said she thought it was fine.

    LED headlamps/fogs; interior footlamps.
So where it the 3rd or 4th Gen 4Runner in your shopping list???? It is far more useful, comfortable and spacious compares to the nissan....

Xterra, really??? Don't embarrass anyone in that discontinued (2015) vehicle. Nissan was once a proud company, they've lost their way.

I think with Xterras its all or nothing. My friend had one she loved.... my roommates xterra was always broken down with this or that. Maybe it depends if it was made on a Wednesday or a Friday? lol

Obviously very late to this discussion but my coworker just sold his XTerra; it was probably around a 2004, though I can't remember the exact year. It was at the point where it needed several thousand dollars of work every year to stay running. It also got 20 L/100 km (12 mpg) highway and 25 (9 mpg) city. Now he has a Pilot for his wife to ferry the kids around and a Civic hatchback for his commute.
