LED Bulbs Blink at Rapid Rate

Sooooooo, on my 2014 TSS, my rear right blinker bulb went out. I took the opportunity to upgrade to LED. Now, both driver and passenger side blink like they are on speed. Usually, this is the indication that one is out. All of them come on - front and back, driver side and passenger side.

Any idea of why they would blink so fast?

You need to add inline resistors for led blinkers. Leds do not pull enough power so the ecu still thinks the bulb is out. The resistors add resistance back into the circuit to trick the ecu.

 

You need a resistor at each bulb. Or you need to replace the flasher relay. Below are some resistors, I am not sure about the relay. I just do the resistor.

The Hyper-flash. Yes, resistor needed for blinkers, some better LEDs have them integrated into them. They are also s bit more pricey.

Headlights? No. Only needed for blinkers. Headlights are a simple off/on through monetary switch.

Many argue that LEDs in stock housing is not a good idea. They are not designed for them, the light does not reflect well, blinding oncoming traffic.

 

Careful mentioning that around here. The headlight hallway monitors will come out in force.

 

Due to my ignorance, how are these different from the HID bulbs that come in most newer vehicles these days. Just simply trying to get educated.

Not an expert but would think those housings are designed for the HIDs. The Tundras are not, LEDs anyway.
I really wanted LED headlights bulbs but have not because of issues; fearing less visibility or blinding others. There are some members on here that are using LEDs and claim good results. The Auxbeam brand comes to mind, but not 100%.

 

So I have an odd situation here. Can't find anything on it so I am hoping this post will generate one! I have a 2015 Tundra SR5 Crewmax. All the bulbs have been changed to LED's. Everything is lighting up. The front directional bulbs were hyperflashing so I added resistors to each of the front directionals and that took care of the hyperflashing BUT ONLY when I do not have the running lights or headlights on! That's right, they blink just like they should until I turn on my running lights then they start hyperflashing again! What am I missing or do I need to do in addition to adding the resistors to the front directionals? Thanks, Andy

 

How and where did you connect your resistors?

 

What ohm rating are the resistors you added? Six ohms is not enough impedance for two LEDs in the same turn signal circuit. If you replaced front and rear bulbs with LEDs, you will need a single six ohm resister at each LED location.

 

If you want LED headlights, I'd look into replacing your entire headlights with 2018+ OEM and an iHacker harness.

Thanks for the heads up on this issue. I put 6-ohm resistors only on the front blinkers. 1 for each of the front blinkers for a total of two. I attached the resistor to the ground wire and the blinker wire which I believe were the white black wire (ground) and the red wire (blinker) . Again they blink perfectly normal now when I'm not running my running lights or headlights. And to make things even crazier the other day I turned on my headlights and the left blinker will work now like normal but the right blinker will only work normal when I'm not using the headlights or running lights! looks like I need to put resistors on the rear blinkers as well which I did not do. I will try that and get back to you on the results afterwards. Thank you again for the information! Andy

 

Just wanted to clarify that headlights are not on a momentary switch. A momentary switch is only "made" when it is actuated, for example this is what a high beam flash switch would use. Headlights will be on a maintained two position switch either on or off.

 

Headlight Revolution has a video showing the resister installation for the rears. See the link below. Resistor installation starts about 11:00 minutes and ends about 15:00 minutes.

I used a single 3 ohm resister for each side in the rear, and that worked great for front and rear. You'll have to use 6 ohm resisters in the rear since already have the 6 ohm resister in the front.

Did you change the blinker fluid?

 

UPDATE: so I installed the 2 new Sylvania resistors on the back blinkers. I have 2 Sylvania resistors on the front blinkers as well. All 4 corners of the 2015 Tundra SR5 have Sylvania resistors on the blinkers. The hyperflashing has now disappeared... Even with my running lights and/or headlights in the on position the hyperflashing is not occurring! Thanks for the help!

NOTE/HOWEVER: now I have another odd issue occurring. When I do NOT have the running lights or headlights on the front LED blinkers work as they should with a bright "on-off-on" with distinction between the "off and on" part of the blink. The rear blinkers work the same...perfectly. However, when I put on my running lights or headlights the front LED blinkers now work like the incandescent bulbs did....they glow "on-off-on" and are not as bright and don't have that distinct on-off-on. The rear LED blinkers work perfectly regardless of whether I have my running lights on or headlights on. thoughts?

 

We’re the wires different colors in the headlights from driver side to passenger side

 

the wires were the exact same colors on all corners of the vehicle.... left to right and front to back.... Toyota used the same colors for the ground and hot wires....

 

Ok thanks. I just sold my old set to someone and I wanted to help them install them. I thought I remembered someone a long time ago saying they were dif colors on dif sides. Thank you
