Thinking of changing from 06 Tacoma to 06/07 Tundra

I have a 2006 Quad cab Tacoma 4.0(122k miles) and would like a bit more space, and a bit more power for towing. I am looking at 2006 Tundra Quad Cab 4.7 and 2007 Ext cab Tundra 4.7/ 5.7. Prices of the 2006 are only about $1000-1500 lower than the similar miles 2007. I am looking at trucks with 120k-140k miles. I actually like the size of the 2006 better. But I am conflicted. Pros and cons please.

 

There is a huge difference between the '06 & '07 Tundra, and the 5.7 is not available in the '06

 

One 2006 with 141K miles(all Texas owned) that I am looking at has no CarFax reported service. I get it that some capable owners do their own service and some capable service centers do not report. Is there an easy way to see if water pump/timing belt has been replaced and other things like that. I know to look for leaks in the valve cover gaskets and power steer pump. Thanks.

 

I went from a 2017 DCLB Tacoma to a 2006 DC Tundra and have 0 regrets.

If back seat space is important, then it's first gen DC all the way....it has 3 more inches of legroom than the 2007 DC Tundra (crewmax is the true 4 door in 2007 and cavernous inside) and it's a huge difference in practical use. If you are frequently towing 3k+ pounds, the 5.7 would be nice though....

 

I just made the switch from a 2010 Tacoma to an 2006 Tundra. I am so glad that I did. It is soooooo much more comfortable and has so much more power. I am amazed that it does not appear that much bigger than the new tacomas, when looking at a 2 gen, but it sure is roomy. I made the move because my growing kids are turning into men and did not fit in the little access cab of my old truck. My 2 cents... Find a good one and go for it.

 

Went from a 2011 Tacoma 4 door to on 06 tundra double cab. The tundra wins hands down, I say do it. Hell the tundra is way more comfy than Cummins lol

I never had a chance to drive a 1st gen Tundra. My 2nd gen 07 DC feels huge driving down the road. It even feels wider from the inside than my 02 Excursion which is a bus by comparison.

 

From riding in a buddies 2009 Tundra the front seats seem higher up on the pan (vs. 1st Gen) which leads to me hitting my head when exiting. The interior of 1st Gen seems bigger inside. The exterior of 2nd Gen has that unnecessary bulkiness, but a sweet 5.7 Liter engine. Both park like Battleships although the 1st Gen is slightly easier.

 

I own a 1st and 2nd gen Tundra, both are regular cab trucks. My mom owns an '05 4 door Tacoma, I have driven it a bit and find it cramped / claustrophobic compared to either Tundra. I am not a fan of the Tacoma.

The interior size of the 1st gen Tundra is just right, and the 2nd gen is huge. Visibility over the hood, fenders and tailgate are pretty good in the Tacoma & 1st gen Tundra. Visibility over the hood, fenders and tailgate from the drivers seat of the 2nd gen take some getting used to. Both the Tacoma and 1st gen Tundra have the turning circle of a battle ship, the 2nd gen Tundra has a much tighter turning circle... it's the easiest of the 3 to maneuver. Handles, knobs and levers are small when compared to the same in the 2nd generation Tundra, my XXL hands appreciate this.

My 4WD 2002 has the 4.7L with timing belt and it provides excellent power for the trucks weight. My 2WD 2007 has the 5.7L with timing chain and it's a bad ass hot rod by comparison. My mom's Tacoma has a V6 and it's a V6.

 

THIS wouldn’t be my choice over the first two options you posted; a 2011 is the big size, but with the bigger body, you’ll want a 5.7 IMO. The 4.7 or 4.6 are awesome in the smaller 1st gens.

 

I traded my 2018 Tacoma DCSB for a 2006 Tundra DC just last week. The 1st Gen Tundras are terrific!
I had a 2003 Tundra step side 4.7 and drove it for 14 years, 250k miles. Was driving strong when I traded it to get my daughter a car.
I bought the 18 Tacoma new and while there are some features I liked, I really missed that V8 engine in the Tundra and the extra room.
Gas mileage is roughly the same.

This is exactly were I am at haha. Found a nice looking used 2004 DC tundra with 166k miles vs getting a 2020 DC Tacoma..I like some of the creature features but ‍♂️. good luck to you OP!

 

My wife talked me out of a double cab Tacoma and into our 05 Tundra double cab and I'm glad she did. Way more room for us and our daughters.
