I'm a genius!!!

Since I frequently reference this forum and never became a member until I needed to view schematics, I thought it was fair that I contributed to everyone's lives. So yesterday I was out like many people on Saturday working my second full time job - chauffeur my kids around to their never ending events. I was on my way to the barber for my son, where I had planned to get my lottery tickets next door while he was was getting his hair cut when all of the sudden my truck stalls. I looked at fuel gauge and saw that I was just below 1/4 of a tank of gas and was like really? First thing that came to mind was like c'mon man! I tried the bang on the tank fix to get me home to no avail at which point I called AAA to tow my truck home. Mind you I've always got something to do and with my truck being down lots of things weren't going to get done.
It was however date night and all you gentlemen and ladies out there know how important that is, I proceeded with my plans all the while thinking of my truck sitting in my driveway and how I was going to attack the fuel pump. I got home around 2300 and came onto the forum where I found tons of useful information and schematics, at last it was about 0030 and I was ready to troubleshoot 1st thing in the morning.
I went to church to get my time in with my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and when I got home I changed into my work gear and started to troubleshoot. Checked the relay on the bench and all was well, checked both EFI fuses and all was well, even tried to hot wire the pump at the relay where it's just loud enough in the neighborhood that I couldn't hear it come on or not. I started to dread the thought of dropping the tank, but that seemed like the only solution. When it came to me, was I out of gas and possibly the float was stuck since I am guilty of running my tank all the down before I fill up again? I shook the truck as hard as I could and didn't hear any sloshing around. Surely the fuel gauge said I at least had a couple of gallons, I should be able to hear that right? Nope, nothing not a sound. I went to grab some fuel from the gas station, about a 1.5 gallons and pour'd it in. Tried to start the truck and nothing, then tried again and praise the Lord it started!!!!!
So really not really adding any value other than that you can laugh at me, I truly felt like a genius (being facetious of course). I have however found that my fuel gauge was acting up and that I will never ever run it down past 1/4 tank ever again.

I do enjoyed your story. I also like the way you troubled shooting your truck problem. Just remember next time if you can't start the truck, give it some gas before doing anything else.

Now that you've done the trouble-shooting, you know you still have a problem...the gas gauge is reading incorrectly.

Of course it’s a TUNDRA what else was it going to need. Lol that’s all mine ever needs is fuel. Cool story.

 

Until you get a chance to address the fuel gauge issue, just reset the trip meter at each fill-up. When you reach 200 miles, re-fill. That will leave you plenty of cushion.
That's what we did for decades with motorcycles before they came with fuel gauges. I did it for 10 or 12 years with a car that had a finicky fuel gauge -- although the car would go 300 miles on a fill-up. It just becomes second nature, and you get used to using the trip meter as your fuel gauge.

Great trouble shooting technique Uwtech! We get many dopes coming through here that can’t spell or read properly. Or, they’ll post up with a 2000 word run-on sentence trying to explain their problem. Thats why I volunteer at Dereks Center which is another story.
