218,900 miles. Drained and filled the transmission pan. Somehow I drained 3.5qts, filled it with 3.75qts, and then let it warm up and did the level check and 2qts poured out... Took it around the block and it feels fine, though I didn't get on it. Tomorrow I might add a bit more and check the level again, I can't believe it was 2qts overfilled.

Your build is inspiring. I want to do something to my CrewMax in regard to supercharging. Where should I start with the build sheet, or do you have one from your adventures that you can give?

The only stuff I've done to the truck is listed in the first page. It's really pretty stock more or less. The only thing I did differently than most with the supercharger is I did all the "upgrades" in regards to the blower before installing it; ie I installed an oversized fuel pump and afr gauge and ran it awhile with those and monitored everything so I had a baseline of how the truck should act before the blower. Most people don't have an afr gauge at all, that to me was imperative considering the truck has over 200k on it. Otherwise there's nothing special. If you get a supercharger don't get the URD pulley, it's a waste of money.

Also, since I'm on here, I ordered the OVTune so hopefully get that soon. Sounded like it offered a lot more abilities than the HP Tuner offered. I'd still like to dyno it someday, but that's not a priority now since the guy will be able to dial in the ECU with the data logging capability. With the afrs so rich with the TRD tune I'd been looking for something besides the HP Tuner and a dyno (since it's 100+ out during the day) and I think this will be a better call overall and get the truck to stop running so rich.

So no injector changes, and you have programing left to do. Good to know. I was told it was 150 hp out of the box. My motor has 124k on it and is solid, so I may do this very soon.

My FJ40 has a Holley double barrel sniper EFI in it. I like Holley's stuff, probably gonna run a full Holley setup on the 6.0 LQ4 in my buggy

The AFR helps a lot with jet tuning and they are super easy to work on. Just remember to pull plugs and check temp on them when you are tuning.

Injectors are upgraded, they're the ones that come with the supercharger so I'm not sure what their specs are or how they differ from stock (though they're physically quite different). Right now with the "TRD Tune" from Toyota with the blower it'll hit 9:1 afr with full throttle, and hit 11:1 before hitting boost so it runs insanely rich. From other builds I've read, mine should theoretically be in the ~550hp range. I've read differing ideas that the engine loses reliability fast over 600hp, so that's why I stayed with the "stock supercharger" and the "upgraded" pulley. Though with that said I live at 6000ft, and by calculations the smaller pulley should've made up for the elevation difference when I go to lower (2000-3000ft) elevation which is why I got it. So if I ever go down to sea level the key is just don't go WOT a lot, which the only time I'm at sea level is towing anyways. I'd have no issue running the blower on your engine or a higher mileage one, though with that said I don't even have 10k since installing the blower. There's lots of people who have had reliability and engine issues with the blower---but there's also a lot of people that drag race and beat on their trucks, so take their opinions with a grain of salt. If you use the blower for towing, passing people, occasionally going ham to have fun, but aren't sitting at full throttle for minutes on end or over and over rapidly, I think it's totally safe.

Ah, yeah, I am not a teenager, so that's out of my blood concerning a daily workhorse. Towing my El Camino to beat on the El Camino is the key. I'd want to keep it closer to 500 hp. Is there a way to dial in the boost to achieve this number? I also read that with the TRD blower a ECU re-flash isn't needed. Your thoughts?

I'm not aware of a way to modify the boost. The valve that controls the boost, as I understand it, is vacuum operated so is more or less controlled by how open the throttle body is. I bet you could easily make a valve and put it inline with the vacuum hose to manually limit the boost--but I've never read of someone doing that. Otherwise it's down to just pulleys, and swapping the pulley is not easy, plus there are essentially no options for pulleys. So you're kind of stuck with 7psi unless you get creative. With all that said, Magnuson claims that the stock blower makes 505hp so I would just run it stock and you should be fine.

I would definitely reflash the ECU at a minimum. I drove around before I flashed it a bit, just to make sure everything was working and I had to find a place that would let me flash it anyways, and it seemed fine but I didn't push it. So maybe it's possible without a flash, I'm not sure.

On that note, I would NOT run a bullydog. That's what magnuson used to include (I think it's something different now) if you bought a new blower, so in that case maybe I would. But I've read lots of horror stories of the bullydog doing weird things with timing, afr being messed up, lots of issues. I would not run it personally, with or without a blower. Lots of forums seem to suck off bullydog, but the people I've seen with actual gauges and telemetry and testing have shown potential negative effects to running it. The bullydog is the "go to tune" people recommend. I specifically DID NOT get a bullydog, and it even set me back a few weeks trying to figure out where to get the TRD Tune installed since the dealership wouldn't call me back. But my opinion is one of thousands. Maybe I'm wrong. But I did a lot of research before getting, and after getting the blower. Food for thought is all.

I'm glad you mentioned that. I wanted feedback from someone who experienced both flashed and non flashed with the supercharger set up. I will do mine next year, as the total set up I want is gonna run me about 10k when all said and done.

Small update. Finally passed 220k miles the other day. Got the OVTune installed right before towing a Corolla up to SLC and then a crawler back down to Southern Utah. First time in awhile I've towed something actually, I think this was the first big trip towing since getting the supercharger and maybe the Kings, both of which I got for towing lol.

I did a second transmission drain and fill before the trip and OVTune. I was more meticulous about following the procedure and actually filled it with almost 4 quarts this time which is what it should've been so I'm happy now. Then I got the OVTune in, Mat has been awesome to work with so far and I haven't sent in any logs yet. My afr was still super rich at WOT, so the same day that he sent me the base tune he sent me an updated tune after I gave him some afr/rpm data points, I still get super rich but it helped a lot. I can get into boost and still be at 14.7:1 where as before I'd be in the 11s before even hitting boost. The manual gear lock is awesome too, nearly the whole 300 miles or so to Salt Lake City I was locked into 6th with cruise control set at 86mph and she just chugged. I think there were three hills I dropped it into 5th and otherwise it just cruised. It's really nice since the truck will add throttle, and thus add boost, as needed since it can't downshift. So it'll come up to a hill and be at 2300rpm or whatever in 6th and can watch the boost get added in to climb the hill and the revs don't move.

On the way back from SLC I did notice some oddities, quite a few times the truck would over ride the manual control and I'm not sure why. Sometimes I could floor it and it'd lug, other times I'd barely touch it and it'd drop to 4th. I have a feeling it was a safety over ride since it was 90+ out for most of that drive back, plus a big head wind, and overall you gain a few thousand feet of elevation from SLC to where I live. I've been monitoring the transmission temperatures with the Torque Pro app and some custom code I found on the forum, some people have claimed it's not accurate but it seems pretty damn accurate from what I can tell. The tranny at the hottest would hit about 250F, and I had read the trannys get really hot and the light and gauge only move and come on around 300F. At the coolest it ran about 185-190 which makes sense that it'd match the engine coolant and no lower. Also something I didn't know until a few weeks ago, is that 4th and lower the torque converter will lock up and 5th and 6th it constantly slips. Driving up to SLC this wasn't an issue, but coming home the tranny would get hot on the hills so I'd drop it to 4th and the temps would instantly drop as it locked up. Another random bit of info is consistently the highest boost I'm seeing on my digital gauge is 5.8psi at elevation, but the first day of the OVTune with some "testing" I had it read all the way to 6.7psi which is the first and only time it's read above 5.8psi at this elevation. Not sure why that happened, or if it had to do with manually shifting the transmission and that helped it build boost or it was just an anomaly in the gauge (the boost reading is always finnicky, and my analog gauge usually reads higher than the digital anyways); but I thought that was interesting. That kind of wraps up the only updates to the truck lately.

    Great info.

Presently looking for a SC myself. Great read to give me confidence in 132k Tundra.

Truck is at 227,774 miles now. Before going to KOH I changed the oil and got some new Falken 285/75r18 tires.

Towed my buddy's rzr and my dirt bike about 1000 miles round trip and spent a full week in the desert. Truck did fine towing, was hoping for better gas mileage, somehow got 8mpg the whole way. Though I was cruise controlled over 80mph essentially the whole way. I don't think I ever had any pinging issues, I've had it ping in Las Vegas and near the coast before, so I just avoid higher throttle. Johnson Valley is higher than I thought (4600ft) so never had any issues there, even though I was making over 10psi at WOT. Overall still very happy with the blower, though I only have 13k miles on it, but the truck seems totally happy and I don't go easy on it. When towing I usually downshift when it starts holding over 5psi of boost, but for the most part with the OVTune I'm just cruise control locked in 6th gear or 5th if a steep hill is coming up and everything is golden.

I had an issue with the right rear abs sensor while we were down there, which I've had issues from that side before. Of course, in Toyota's shitty wisdom, if the abs sensor is fucked you can't shift the transfer case. And to add to that, apparently the truck is limited to like 12hp in reverse. At one point I tried to pull our friends RV out of the sand, and of course I can't shift into 4Lo because reasons. So I punched it, throw sand everywhere, dig holes, go to back up to get out of the holes and fully floored in reverse and the tires won't even move. I had to sit there and essentially try to crawl control it to get out going forwards. Stupidest shit I've ever experienced, and really pissed me off. I hope whoever thought those features were a good idea got fired a long time ago. Makes me want to buy an Atlas and get rid of the stupid knob.

So anyways, I was stuck in 4Hi for essentially the whole trip. Which since we were in the desert all week was better than 2wd. I towed the rzr home in 4Hi since I still couldn't get it to shift to 2wd, but oh well, not like its gonna hurt the truck. It seemed like an hour or so later when we got to Barstow and pulled into a gas station, at some point the truck had decided to shift into 2wd so that was nice.

Fast forward to a few days ago and I had ordered a OBD2 scanner that can read ABS codes, verified which sensor it was, went through the wiring and found where someone before had crimped the wires together and one of the connections had come out. I soldered everything back together and the truck works again and the Toyota gods allow it to shift the transfercase! While I was in there I put a new caliper on the driver rear since that was seized and not doing anything, which had caused the passenger rear to wear super fast and had ground down to the metal by the time I got to it, so new rotor on that side and new pads everywhere.

And that takes everything up to speed! I think the idler bearing is going out, but it (or whatever) stopped squealing and I didn't feel like wrestling with the serpentine so waiting to swap that out. Otherwise the issues and maintenance are all fixed and up to date and new tires.

Please take pics on that idler replacement. I think mine is on borrowed time as well.

I had to change my alternator and noticed some play in that idler.

BTW, you think the speed sensor system is a head scratcher? Try changing the alternator.

Lower rad hose has to come out, fan and shroud has to come out. Power steering pump has to be unbolted, then you can remove the alternator.

It took me six hours and I even have a lift. I'd like to FUPA punch the engineer that designed that abortion.

Mine did that as well. It seems like no matter what, fluid just drains from the “check plug”.

What a Ridiculous system. My wife’s honda is much easier, fills like a diff then it pours out the fill hole

It's pretty easy, I had to remove it when I did the supercharger. Just getting the belt back on is a two person deal and sucks ass, especially with the smaller belt I have for the blower.

Yea whoever decided the trans process was better than a dip stick was a complete retard. Looks like I didn't post it above, but I went back through after I had the issues and redid everything to a T from the manual, and used an IR thermometer to check the pan temperature and stuff, and THEN I had to put like 1.5qts back in (after I had previously drained the 2qts) so at that point everything made sense. But the whole process was a complete cluster. Lock the trans thermostat open, short two pins on the OBD, shift from D to N 4 times within 37 seconds and then the S light will stay on for 4 seconds and at that point put it in Neutral and you now have 60 seconds before the trans exceeds temperature to check the bolt for the level.... It was the most fucked procedure I've ever had to do. Building an engine was easier and more straightforward than checking the fluid level. Almost worth dropping the pan and welding a dip stick tube on honestly haha

I was so frustrated with it that i measured what i took out and just replaced exactly that. No problems in 10 years so im sure it will be fine. Plenty of guys are on original fluid for 200k miles

Update since I hit 230,000 miles yesterday. At the beginning of March I had some overheating issues when I went to tow the FJ to go wheeling.

I thought I had blown a headgasket, but I checked compression and it was at 149psi with less than 10psi variance across the board, and coolant and oil looked fine. Though I had lost a lot of coolant. I didn't feel like fucking with the truck, so I dropped it off at a small local shop I know and had them change the radiator and thermostat. The radiator had some crusty shit in one of the corners that I had known about for awhile, so figured it needed to be replaced anyways so may as well do it now and that would weed out the radiator and tstat. Well, that appeared to be the whole issue since the truck has been fine since! The crack must've escalated where you couldn't see it and was losing pressure and coolant in the system, so crisis averted! But then the next drive after I get home, and I throw a CEL for cylinder 1 misfire. After some diagnosis and fucking around, I find that for whatever reason the cylinder 1 spark plug had just decided to shit itself under high load, threw in a stock spark plug I had around and no issues! Which reminds me I should probably change that out back to the cooler plugs... A week ago I did throw a CEL for cylinder 1 misfire again, but when I restarted the truck I couldn't get it to happen again and that's the only time since I replaced the plug it's happened. It's not a coil pack issue either so not sure what the deal was, I should just replace all the plugs with new cooler plugs to be safe...some day.

Moving forward, and the big test, on Thursday I towed my buddy's LS donor 2500 Chevy down the hill and picked up his 1st gen 4runner that the LS is getting swapped into. This was the first time towing since overheating towing the FJ, but no hiccups at all!

I also got a module from a user on the forums that automatically disables the traction control fully when the truck starts. Got that in a few weeks ago. It's no different than physically pushing the buttons, but is nice to have it do it while buckling up. Also random facts, I made 7psi of boost yesterday at 6000ft of elevation. Considering at sea level I make well over 10psi of boost, if you assume power is linear to intake pressure then I think 600hp is a very realistic number for the truck (380hp * 24.7psi/14.7psi), which I think is kind of cool if that's true. Guess my next vehicle will have to be 700hp just to one up myself :D

Nice FJ! 4Runner looks like it’ll be a fun build too. Pretty sweet seeing a truck with those miles being boosted, being worked and taking it!

I’m curious...what octane do you run, and what kind of mileage do you see towing, or doing regular driving?

Just 91 octane, if I get to really low elevation, like Las Vegas, then it can start pinging if it's hot out with the 91 octane. Towing varies a lot, usually it's pretty bad. When I towed the 15ft flatbed with the rzr to California and back I got about 8mpg the whole way, when I towed the 4Runner up the hill last week I got 7mpg. Though that's going about 80-85mph the whole way, and the trailer I've weighed at 2500lbs by itself. The truck is stock besides a 3" lift all around and 35s. For normal driving I get 13mpg, sometimes 14 on longer trips. Again, that's letting the boosty bois rip and cruise controlled at 85 on the interstate.

80-85mph while towing is fast, but that's Utah from what I remember. Sweet rig!

Love your builds. If you haven't already gone with the Holley setup for your 6.0, I'd recommend it. I have Sniper EFI on the LQ9 in my FJ60 and it works really well. I had it tuned by a local LS tuner guru and he did a great job with it.

That's good to hear! Everywhere I looked the Holley was the way to go for a LS, and after my good experience with the Sniper on the FJ I went ahead and got the full Terminator X setup for the LQ4. I still haven't installed it, right now I'm working to get the belts routed and then plumb the radiator but I'm getting close to firing the LS up. I also got the 7" touch screen dash which I'm excited to try. Let's see your 60!

Also while I'm on this thread, the Tundra is doing great. Got some XB Headlights on but otherwise no changes. Friday through Tuesday i ended up driving about 1600 miles, 1000 of which was towing my friends Ultra4. I drove out to Colorado on Friday, grabbed it Saturday and drove back to Utah, and then spent the next few days towing it to places to wheel. The 24ft enclosed it came with didn't have a weight distribution hitch and was pretty sketchy at times, and we ran into three thunderstorms coming back. It made me appreciate the little 18ft flat bed a lot more! I also got super close to selling the truck, a guy on Facebook is looking for exactly my setup for camping and says he'll pay $20-25k which is more than I know I could get normally, I decided to pass though since the only replacement I'd want is a newer diesel, and I don't actually need that any time soon (if ever). It'd be nice to get top dollar for the tundra, but I've spent a lot of time dialing out all the quirks and I know it's reliable, which makes it worth a lot more to me, so she isn't going anywhere. Speaking of which it passed 234k while under boost pulling a trailer with a racecar across the Rockies, and didn't miss a beat!

Glad to hear you're going with the Holley! Just make sure you have someone who can tune it, apparently it's a little different from tuning the stock ECU, but my guy spent the time to figure it out. Funny enough, the local "Holley guru" was a total dud and put a shit tune in it. I think he's more about forced induction drag cars and making max hp than normal street driveability. Anyways, here are a couple pics of my 60 to clutter up your thread.

Oh and I'm jealous of the 7" display! I have the little one that comes with the kit. It works great and lets me monitor everything just fine, but that big display would be so nice.
