I'm an avid backpacker and have some trips that I want to do in Grizzly territory. All the research I've done has landed me on the Glock 40 with hard cast bullets such as Buffalo Bore or Underwood. For me, it's a good compromise between effectiveness, capacity, and weight since I'd have to lug this thing around all day.

I've run into several black bears out here in the Appalachians and all of the encounters ended with me seeing the bears' ass-ends hightailing it out of there, except for one where I surprised a mother and cub. Even then, she wasn't aggressive, but she held her ground. She treed the cub and treed herself briefly, but then came back down and held her ground. She wouldn't leave the area so I had to bushwhack around her. If that were a grizzly, I'd probably be a statistic right now. We were literally within 15' of each other. I don't carry a weapon or bear spray when hiking out here unless I have my little girl with me.

No experience with the kriss. Have seen them run well in a CMMG Banshee pistol.

I spent some time camping in Grizzly country in remote parts of Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming

Bear Spray was the first line of defense and the Glock 20 would be ready if needed. Never had to use either

Drooling over here. I'm very close to pulling the trigger on a Banshee 10mm.

My wife has been placed on alert that if she sees a $1700ish charge at some random sounding gun store it’s legit. And it’s a banshee. Means I found one in stock.

I carry spray. Spent a lot of time in grizzly country. Be smart and your chance for a bad encounter will go down a lot.

Here in Canada, we can't carry handguns in the bush. We have big bears, grizz and black, and lots of them. Alaska has us beat I think though. Lol.

After years of time in bear country, talking with fish and game officers as well as biologists, guides and others who work with and around bears, I have settled on two choices.

My go to is a pump action 12ga shotgun loaded with Federal Deep Penetrator slugs. My second choice is a lever action 45/70 loaded with 300 grain or heavier bullets, preferably solids.

Both options allow quick pointing, cater to gross motor skills under pressure, give fast follow up shots, and with the loads I choose have bone crushing penetration and massive kinetic energy to break a charging bear down quickly.

45/70. Sounds like you are looking for an excuse to buy a new gun and that’s the all around coolest that’s been around forever.

If you’re married this would be most women’s logic.
If I use 870 for bear gun: You can shoot bears and dove with the same gun? Why do we ever need another gun?
Glock as a bear gun: why do you need any other pistols?
Entirely different rifle that’s an awesome 45/70 big game rifle: Thanks for buying that bear gun to keep us safe honey.
