2017 Tacoma or Colorado Duramax

Looking into acquiring a midsize truck. By default I usually gravitate toward Toyota Vehicles but the 2017 Tacoma does not seem as impressive as usual. I am much more impressed by the Chevrolet Colorado Diesel and its specifications.

I am looking for something that exhibits the following characteristics:
Reliability - I do not want this vehicle to leave me stranded
Longevity and Durability - I expect this truck to last 10+ years and 200,000+ miles
Off-road capability - I frequently Hunt in remote locations throughout Colorado
Towing capacity - Need to be able to tow a fully loaded trailer with a weight of 6100 pounds.
Gas Mileage - Obviously I enjoy saving money on fuel mileage

Anyways which would you pick and why?

 

Your first 2 things you want you can only get with tacoma. Only thing Colorado diesel will do better is towing, but that's only when it's not in the shop of course...

 

My two cents. Towing a 6,100# trailer is not really mid-sized truck territory. The Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating for the Colorado is 12,700#. The Curb Weight (empty is 4,500#).

Fill the truck with 4 people (600#), Fuel (150#), some accessories for the truck and some gear for the 4 people (200#), a trailer hitch for t your 6,100# trailer (100#), and then your 6,100# trailer. Now you are up to 11,650#.

In theory you are below the weight rating but do you really want to be that close to the edge and drive Colorado mountain roads?

That and I know far to many Chevy drivers that struggle with truck problems that I just roll my eyes at. There is no reason they should have to live with the odd things that they do. Buy a Toyota and enjoy a well engineered and well built truck.

I have to agree with the last two posts. I had a GMC Sirrea. It was a nice truck but started having problems with active fuel management and GM support was horrible. Toys are the way to go. MPG is a downer for the toys unfortunatly, but they make it up with reliability IMHO. I would recommend a tundra if you are towing. You can get a good used Tundra with low mileage for around $30g. Let the first owner work out the bugs and pay the depreciation on it. Plus you might land a good deal on a lease turn in. Cost and mileage is about the same between the tacoma and tundra. Take a look and compare, i did and went with a used tundra and i am very happy with it.

 

And after the 10 years, 200,000 miles what do you think that Duramax is going to be worth?

Well it looks like you've already got a fantastic truck for towing and handling the mountains. How about you designate the Tundra for this and spend the money on a more sporty/fuel efficient daily driver?

 

Tacoma:

Tacoma will cost less up front and probably have the cheaper cost of ownership throughout its lifespan.
