I'd try to make sure it has the 5.7 engine in it. Regardless of if you tow or not.

    See fine print
If budget allows, 2016 is the first year the 38 gallon tank came out. Prior to that your stuck with a small 26.

If I had to buy a second gen it would be a rock warrior. Other than that like @CaptTyler said, get the 5.7.

Two big things added to later 3rd gen were larger gas tank and brake controller. (some have had problems with brake controller, though)

My biggest beef with newer ones is what they did to rear seat of CM. Up till 2013, they used to have reclining and sliding feature. I use this feature daily (gives very flexible loading options besides creature comfort). Newer ones have flip-up seat.

There are other features that were taken away as well: sliding console, double glove compartment, power outlet that stays on for two hours after the engine is turned off, lights on the doors, dual climate control for all trims, . . . Granted that some of these have been taken away before 2014.

What they did externally is sort of minor, imo. They didn't make it better, just different. I think the interior of 3rd gen is nicer though. But I do often hear about people complaining about the lack of storage spcace.

I think if you find any good truck in 2007-2017, you are good. Changes are not that dramatic.

forgot to mention, I also recommend 5.7. I would also get one with 4x4.

I think there's air injection pump problems on earlier years of 2nd Gen. You can do a search.

also crew max have the sliding read window :)

but yeah, 5.7L and 4x4 if you need it.

Like others I wish I would have a bigger tank but it only started in 2016....

another +1 for a used rock warrior. No chrome on those.
