I prefer to just leave it alone. Why spend money on something when you don't have to do so? Even if it burns 2 or 3 quarts between 5k changes that is cheaper than replacing the engine, trading it, etc. It may or may not ruin the cats--there is no certainty either way. There are plenty of motors that go many hundreds of thousands of miles that burn oil the entire time. You can buy a lot of oil for the costs that you are talking about. It's no big deal to add oil.

Actually, the computer is the #1 thing that has kept modern engines running with a perfect mixture of gas and air--not the fuel injection. The computer constantly checks the fuel/air ratio with sensors in the exhaust and constantly adjusts the fuel injection to make sure the mixture is correct. It is like having someone with a screwdriver constantly adjusting the carb or fuel injection as needed. A computer could do the same with a carb, and fuel injection has been out since the 50's and it alone did not solve rich mixtures--the computer did.

Well, after reading more of this thread, I'll keep an eye on my 18 CM 1794. Like I said before, my 13 didn't use any oil. I am hopeful the new ride will be the same.

If we're possibly bringing rings into the scenario I was talking to a certified marine mechanic who works for a large boat dealer locally, he was driving a 2and Gen Tundra. Anyway I have a 2-stroke 2007 Yamaha 175 outboard high pressure direct injection (HPDI) on my bass boat and told him I run ethanol free gas and Yamaha Ring Free, he said your doing it right. Then he pointed at my Tundra parked next to his and said "Hell you can run it in that, I run it in mine". It takes 1oz for every 10 gallons of gas. Here's the description.
