Why not to make a PVC intake?

I bought my Tundra a little over two months ago and have been going through this process of “making it mine.” Replacing worn parts, putting history on fluids, removing mods I didn’t like, and adding those I did. Typical stuff we all do and we rank them in an order of when-to-do. When the previous owner was showing me the vehicle, I noticed a PVC intake mod that made me reminisce of 20 years ago during my Honda Civic days and when Vin Diesel was badass. No big deal; there are always some mods that can be done legitimately cheaper.

A couple of months pass by and I remembered I was able to keep a couple removed stock parts and the intake tube was one. I missed a few opportunities on good deals on aftermarket intakes and decided to put the stock tube back on. I took a few pictures and thought I would share them in case someone was considering this move.

This is the intake. Not too badly done from the outside.

This side goes to the throttle body. Take note of the gap on the left between the PVC outside and the fernco inside, not to mention the extra difference with the thickness of the PVC. Look on the right side of the PVC and notice it's squeezed out-of-round from the hose clamp. This reduces the 3”ID to 2.8”. Also note the round impression on the inside of the fernco that shows where the TB sat and the distance between the TB and PVC.

In this picture, notice the gap around the PVC where it doesn't touch the fernco. Also, note the ripples when looking down PVC caused by the hose clamps.

I’d say this mod is not worth it. I’m glad to have it off and fairly certain it will run better now with the stock tube.

A couple more. I’m pretty sure that’s PVC primer too.

Haha I had a short PVC connect for my K&N 14" cone filter to make a DIY short ram intake for my 337 edition GTI when I was 17...loved doing little dumb stuff like that I thought I was the shit.

Edit: I still am the shit.

I remember doing this in my Dad's 83 VW rabbit and blowing some things up. The car was older than me but damn was it a tank and fun.
