Oil change intervals

I was told by the Toyota service department that my 011 tundra with full synthetic oil needs oil and filter change every 10,000 miles. How many miles do you other owners put on your oil?

 

10,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. I have changed oil (non-synthetic) every 6 month (5 non-synthetic oil change--free from Toyota), then two synthetic oil changes 1 year apart. So I got total of 7 oil changes so far. Since my mileage is always low, I just go by the months.

By the way, I still haven't broken 13k miles yet.

 

If its a flex fuel, its every 5k miles

 

7500 Amsoil Synthetic, they told me I can go 10,000+, but my filter would start breaking down, so I get it changed. Oil is almost as clean coming out as it was coming in.

 

Thanx for your input guys, after reading your responses, I think I will put 10,000 miles or 1 year, which ever comes first. Then change the oil myself and see what it looks and smells like then decide if I will want to change it sooner. I use full synthetic in my bike and change it at the end of the season, with a new filter. I usually put 6-7000 miles a season on it, and the oil is still in good condition when I change it.

 

You can also send an oil sample to blackstone for analysis. Then they send you a report back with comments/suggestions.

 

I will be changing mine every 9,000 miles, but at the 3,000 and 6,000 mile marker, I will be changing the oil filter and topping it off. Fully synthetic may run for a long time, but the filter doesn't.

 

For those that do their own oil change, how much do you typically lose with the filter?
Lets say you run 15k mile oil but want to change out the filter every 5 - how much would you lose changing just the filter?

 

I would follow the owners manual, period. You will be in right standing should any issues arise. The free 10k oil change is marketing hype. Only full synthetics are good for 10k. M1 used to advertise 25k back in the day before many here were born (jimmini i'm old!) But they lost in revenue. The sales pitch is 'free' and your truck should hold up for a while with marginal semi-synth. Oil and years down the line if you got problems it may be on you. Disclaimer I've run amsoil since 91 and only run the extended changes using their synthetic filters and UOA for trending; other wise I buy the 7500 mile/6 month oil changes and have peace of mind. I have even missed the mark by 3 to 4 months in my power stroke and the tbn numbers and wear metals were within normal range. So my peace of mind is if I miss my 6 month mark I will be ok, bit will get it done asap. Summary, use "bobistheoilguy" for tutorials, but would not blindly follow Toyota 10k reco just cause they market it as free.
