    Hello everyone,
I live in California and I recently realized that my registration fees went up instead of down compared to last year. Something that caught my attention is the weight classification of my truck, the dmv records states the weight of my truck is 7000 Lb, which sounds wrong to me but I would like to know if anyone else has had the same issue? Does anyone know where can I find an official document stating the real weight of my truck?

Sounds like that is the GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) for your truck. Anyway, the official GVWR for your particular truck should be listed on the sticker on your door striker post. Looks something like this:

Thanks for the suggestion, I checked the sticker on my truck and it looks like the GVWR is ok. This is my first truck and I didn't believe it was that heavy...

That isn't it's actual weight. That is how much it can legally weigh while you are out driving around. The actual weight, or curb weight is more on the order of 5500 lbs. But that isn't the number that they tax you on. They tax you on the GVWR.

So your truck probably actually weighs around 5500 lbs, meaning that you can throw an extra 1500 lbs or so on it before you hit the GVWR.

That's great information, 7000lb seems too much for the truck weight. I'm glad I asked and you were able to clarify that.

Are you contesting weight or commercial aspect? All pick ups in Cali are commercial vehicles unless you have a cap

Edit: What Grendel says ^^^^^. He types faster.

I could be wrong but I think CA classifies pretty much all pickup's as commercial vehicles, hence the outrageous registration fees.

I think some folks work around this by putting a cap/camper shell on the back and re-register as a normal vehicle, which has a different licence plate. Don't get caught hauling crap without that camper shell on the back though. Big fines, from what I've read.

I weighed my 2020 PRO after adding a 4” Readylift 35” tires on 20” wheels and a Backflip Tonneau cover and it weighed in at 6702 lbs or 3040 kg...Canadian Truck so not sure what extras Toyota have added to trucks up here.

We have guys in SoCal that easily carry 8k lbs of year and water and spare tires while off-roading, which is why many of them are looking into custom HD leafs.
