At work tonight, I was inside the plant and heard a helluva racket. We have rail road tracks right beside the plant, the noise I heard sounded normal, just louder, as when a 18 wheeler crosses the tracks, especially when they are empty. Well, it was a 18 wheeler, but not what I was expecting. The train was backing up, no cross arms, flashing lights at the crossing or on the train and of course, no horn.

The railroad crew is required to stop and flag (protect with a man on the ground at the crossing) until the train occupies the crossing.
The trucker didn't obey the railroad crossbuck sign and yield to the on coming train.
I'm glad no one was injured. As a retired locomotive engineer I unfortunately was involved in several grade crossing collisions during my career.

Trains are amazingly heavy. One average coal train hauls the same weight as 400 semi trucks or it's 11,600 times heavier than an average car. As a comparison, the same car weighs 3,200 times more than a can of soda. Something to think about when you're going to save time by running a crossing in front of an on coming train.

I haven't spoken to him since the state trooper was here. He said he seen the train, but didn't realize it was backing up, of course he was going slow over the tracks. Once he realized it was backing up, it was too late. Hopefully he still has a job. America needs the truck drivers.

True the truck's not required to stop. On public crossings, without active crossing signals, he's required to yield to an approaching train. I'm not sure of the law at private crossings. The railroad crew is on industry track which requires the engineer to run at restricted speed which has specific train handling requirements. The railroad employee watching the shoving move (backwards) must protect the crossing.

He likes the pay, but it's hard for him to find someone he really gets along with. He takes care of himself, health wise, reason he's still doing it into his 70's, most of the guys he gets teamed with, are way over weight and dress like slobs, his words, not mine. Lol. Honestly, I'm not sure the of the route.

The truck was able to drive away, I figured the trailer would be messed up, evidently not. But it looks like the train is off the rail.

I own/operate 30-40 trucks. Safety is a motherfucker. My best drivers are all over 65 years old, and I only have 3 or 4. True drivers. My oldest is 82 years old, and an owner operator. He runs a 350 mi round trip route for us every night, and the guy is a G Damn saint. He’s taken more deer the past 2 years than I have the past 5 years hunting, and he keeps on truckin. His CSA scores are perfect.
I’m definitely concerned about the future of driving careers.
We have nearly zero millennials interested in driving Class A CDL.
So to all you CDL drivers out there, thank you. Most of America has no clue what you do for them.

PS - Fuck the new 2008+ Freightliner DPF rigs. You cost me tens of thousands.
