I currently own an 04 Tacoma with ~140k miles and have been entertaining the idea of getting a larger pickup for hauling with. Found this on Craigslist and wanted to get some opinions on it. Anyone have advice for what to look for on these trucks for problems? I'm not too familiar with the Tundras, so any advice helps. I've already requested photos of the frame to see what kind of shape it is in.

    Pros:
    One owner
Good price for Alaska, may be able to negotiate
    Autostart
    Leer shell
Carfax has maintenance records from deaerlships detailing regular oil changes, diff fluid (90k, 140k) & transfer case fuilds changed (140k), spark plugs changed (140k) transmission serviced (140k)

    Cons:
Some dents/scratches (not a deal breaker for me)

    https://anchorage.craigslist.org/ctd/d/anchorage-2010-toyota-tundra-4x4-trd/7058825689.html

    From the ad:
Nice truck, one owner, clean inside, well maintained.
    5.7L engine
    Remote start
    Leer canopy
Has few dents and scratches, but otherwise in good overall condition.

Get a good look at the underneath, check all around for rust. Alaskan climate is similar to Maine, you’ll have to check the frame real good. Also check the underneath of the bed, and under the bedliner if it has one. Dealer records for service, that’s excellent. That’s not a bad price, you may talk them down a bit but honestly that’s a good deal provided there isn’t much rust.

If it helps at all my 2011 has 148k on it and has been a dream to own besides a recently new oil leak. With regular maintenance it hasn't given me any major issues. No road salt to deal with down here but the drivetrain has been great. Mine is a non flex fuel though, im not sure how that system differs from mine or if it causes any other problems down the road. I wouldn't personally be scared of the mileage if its clean and drives like it should. Good Luck!

Got photos of the frame and couple of dents on the tailgate/hood. Frame looks great with minimal rust. Overall the truck is clean. Planning on getting it in a shop today for an inspection, if everything checks out I'll be on a plane to Anchorage Saturday to pick it up. Just need to figure out what to offer him...

Mechanic checked out the truck and said everything looks great mechanically. No leaks, fluid levels are good. Looks like we've settled on a price of $14,500. Fair price, especially for Alaska. Excited to own a Tundra!

Looks like a good deal on a pretty nice truck :)

Familiarize yourself with the Tundra Bed Rust issues and check thoroughly for it. I have a 2010 w/ LineX from day one and the bed is rusting out from underneath.

Flew down to Anchorage to check it out. Ended up buying it and spent the weekend around Anchorage before driving back 6.5 hours to Fairbanks. Tundra.jpg -40.jpg

Congrats! Did the -40 crack your windshield? We had -21 here in Ohio 2 years ago, can’t imagine what -40 feels like.

The windshield was already cracked when I bought it, so no idea. Could have been the cold or rocks from passing vehicles, tough to say. Standard Alaskan windshield though, not worth getting fixed until it becomes safety issue. -40 is cold, but it's all relative. Hasn't gotten above 0 in a couple months now, so it'll feel like summer when that happens.

Take a good look inside the front wheel wells at the cam tower gasket area. Reference the "Cam Tower Seal Leak" thread for a rare but serious problem with the 5.7 engine. Other than that, you got a nice truck there.

-40 sucks. It doesn't happen too often and it looks pretty good that this year isn't going to be one of them for us.
