Hi all, just joined to see what advice I can get in buying one of these trucks. I'll be a regular poster once I get one. I need a fairly low mileage 4wd Tundra access cab or crew cab or a 4wd Tacoma with the crew cab. I've been looking for a few months and it's hard to find anything in my area for even 10K and under 200K in the Portland OR metro area. There's lots with salvage and rebuilt titles but there's no way I would consider one like that. When I increase my range to 15K, more show up but mostly from independent dealers so it's a crap shoot there. I don't trust used car salesmen as the ones I've encountered were the typical stereotypes. I usually end up walking away from them never buying anything and I doubt I ever will. I'm aware they're usually good trucks even with higher miles like that but I don't want to get into something that will end up needing lots of repairs in a short time. I'm aware of issues like rusty frames but I don't think that is too much of a problem since we don't generally use salt on our roads. The other thing is the starters on the 4.7's which are a pain the change. I just learned today after just some casual browsing is the air pump has issues as well.
I'm hoping for some good advice here. Thanks in advance.

Have you looked at Vroom.com? I am not affiliated with them but I did buy my truck from them. They are based out of TX and have all kinds of makes and models, all diff mileage and some are lifted, newer and older. Give it a look! And they ship to all 48 for $499!

Thanks but I want to stay local. I don't want to buy something sight unseen and I don't like traveling too far to looks at something.

Wow, you guys are fast! I belong to another Toyota forum and I never got an answer even though I've been a member there since 2008 and have a few posts.

They have an inspection upon delivery. Lots of pictures on the site and if when it arrives and you don't like it, send it back!

Tacomas and Tundras really hold their values, so it's tough to find a cheap diamond but it can happen. That's why you'll get a few suggestions about broadening your search. One thing to remember is that they are generally very reliable, which is why they hold their values. Good luck.

Honestly that budget is going to be tough unless you're willing to accept high miles. Trucks tend to hold their resale value really well over other vehicles. In '02 I bought a 10-year old Jeep Cherokee for $3k. It was a V6 4x4 with around 130k miles. A decade later, in 2012, I was again looking for something similar: a 10-year old V6 4x4 with ~130k miles. This time I preferred a Tacoma, but I was shocked to learn that they were selling in the range of $12-14k.

This is just the reality of the market for trucks, and Toyota trucks are especially good at holding high re-sale/trade-in values. This is one of the main reasons so many of us love them so much. You'll really appreciate that when it comes time to trade it in or upgrade.

Yep, if you were closer, your truck would be in my garage by now.

I'm considering any generation. First Gen's are closer to my price range anyway.

I pretty much refresh my local CL on my comps throughout the day.

I know there are lots of better deals found further south but unfortunately I don't have the time to travel nor the health anymore to do a road trip like that.

I'll add that if you're worried about the starter being hard to replace you should look at the 07 (I think) steering rack. I'll muddy the decision even more and mention timings belts on first gens. Nothing is perfect. I got a first gen because I could get more for under $15k. I also like the way the double cab looks in comparison to the snub-nosed 07+ but that's just me and I've seen plenty of nice looking 2nd and 3rd gens.

Good point on the rack. I've never been a fan of steering racks. I still have nightmares of when I had to replace one in a '78 Audi 5000 back in 1983. That is one job I refuse to do. I'm not afraid of timing belts. I did one a year ago on my wife's Acura MDX. The hardest part was just busting the crank pulley bolt loose. Everything else wasn't too bad.
There's always a V6 option on the Tundra but those seem to be as rare as hen's teeth.

The v6 is pretty rare. Also for the years with the 4.0 v6 you are giving up a bit of power over the 4.7 vvt.

I'm really having trouble trying to budget more than $10K for a truck. What repairs could I expect in a higher mileage truck, going over 150K? I think the starter is one of them. I'm sure CV joints are another. These are both I think I could tackle myself. I do recall I could not do the CV's on an 89 5th gen pickup I had due to some clearance issues. I just could not get them out for the life of me.
I'm looking for a Toyota again because I'm just tired of band-aiding my old OT 4X4 truck.

i found mine on Facebook Marketplace. I actually only use FB for the Marketplace really. Seller told me that Craigslist buyers were pretty shady and FB seemed to be a more legit and straightforward experience.

I don't doubt it. I've called on few that seemed OK in the listing. I always have some good questions for the sellers and those weed out the shady ones. I haven't went out to look at one truck yet so far.
