I don't hate the idea of the Hybrid nor the v6 turbo.

I read something a few days ago about the Land Cruiser being discontinued in 2022. If you have an extra $90G's and want one, you only have a couple of years to pull the trigger. I doubt the chasis will be used on any other Toyota or Lexus, but the powerplants probably will.

Only 295hp and 356 ft-lb of torque for a SUV that size?

That's still only a rumor at this point. Nothing be confirmed by toyota.
Yeah but it's also going to drop in weight so theres going to be some balance.

The article was in Forbes and the guy who wrote it pretty much said it was a done deal. I don't trust most media though, so you might be spot on.

It’s very possible that the US will only offer the 300 series as a Lexus LX.

Motor Trend. This one seems more legit. Time will tell I guess. But this quote:

The only bad news we have to offer, then, is that the model's future in the U.S. is uncertain. Fewer than 4,000 Land Cruisers were sold in the United States in 2019 (and barely more than 3,000 found new homes in 2018). Regardless, it seems possible that all the answers to our Land Cruiser questions may arrive as soon as summer's end.

I'm real sad that Toyota is embracing that godawful 3.5L engine as much as they are. :pout:

Agree. I’d be tempted to trade the 2013 LX in for a 2016+ LC with the 8 speed and other upgrades and run it forever. Although TBH - my wife prefers my 2017 Limited (3” lift and 275s) and keeps driving it in the snow and salt ... leaving the LX just sitting there. My kids prefer to take the 4 Runner to school b/c it’s easier to park. I personally love the LX... but it isn’t practical for me to pull work trailers around with it and I’d just ruin the interior anyway.

I thought I heard that a brand new platform and motor was under development for both the Tacoma and tundra. Twin turbo v6 and hybrid?

They are, but they're using the 3.5 motor from the current Tacoma for all that it seems.

Ya but isn’t that the Atkinson cycle engine? I thought that style of motor did not work well with forced induction?

It is Atkinson, and there's actually an aftermarket turbo kit for that engine that the Tacoma guys are running with good success

The Atkinson Cycle works the way it does because of cam design and cam timing. It would be simple to revert it back to a standard induction system for the purpose of incorporating twin turbos.

Well that’s cool. I had a 17’ Tacoma and I actually liked the motor in the taco, but I wasn’t a fan of the transmission programming because it tried to keep it in its lowest rpm at all times. The motor was fun if you kept it around 3500 rpm.

I had a ‘16 and I agree, it was decent when you really wound it up, but you’d have to floor it to do anything because of that damned transmission.

Looks like an $80k sienna to me. 3.5L and an emphasis on luxury kind of defeats the purpose of a land cruiser

+1 on the 3.5/6 speed in the Tacoma, what a miserable setup. I had a 2018 Tacoma Off Road for a little less than a year. The only time I was happy with that engine was when in passing situations. It pulled pretty well from 3500 to redline, much better than my 2014 4.0/5 speed. The rest of the time the constant shifting, the holding onto lower gears waaayy too long, shifting down at the slightest hint of upgrade or headwind just drove me crazy. Gas mileage wasn't all that much better on the highway than the new 2019 Tundra Off Road that I'm very happy with.

I might be completely wrong, but IMO if you like the relative simplicity of the 5.7/6 speed, get them while you can... they likely won’t be around forever. The EPA requirements are making everything so much more complicated and that doesn’t always bode well for long term reliability and durability. My buddy’s company and an other company are currently moving a BIG piece of specialized industrial equipment from NY out to Northern California. They had all sorts of newer semi tractors to choose from but took a rebuilt 1999 long nose Peterbilt because while it isn’t as comfy as the newer tractors, he said it has more “real world” power and would do better holding speed on the Donner and other passes. And he said it’s lots less likely to throw a stupid code or go in to limp mode as well.

There actually talking about bringing the hybrid and twin turbo over from the Lexus LS. It’s been a proven motor. I’ve heard this from a couple Toyota reps.
