Wow that’s nuts.. luckily you’re okay. Can you share any potential symptoms you felt in the ride leading up or was it unnoticeable?

Given you got that ride from Colorado and now in Alaska weather, I'd sure be under it checking what else is about to fall off !

Was it ever updated for the recall?

All 3rd gen 4Runners, 2nd gen Tacomas, T-100s and 1st Gen Tundras had the recall for LBJs. ONLY use OEM parts, NAPA and other stuff fails in a few thousand miles and yeah having this happen going 50+ on highway could be deadly.

Without a close-up, it's hard to see any failure. The ball joint appears intact with a portion? of the mounting stud protruding. I can't tell if the nut has simply unscrewed due to missing cotter pin, or the stud has broken.

If the stud broke at a thread, it's a fatigue failure. Probably started out as inadequate torque of the nut. If the stud has fracture plane(s), then it simply wasn't strong enough, which is hard to believe.

Other members have reported that these give little to no warning before they go. That's why many advise replacing them if you have a ton of miles on them.

I don’t see that my ‘06 had the recall done per the Toyota website nor is there any open recalls pertaining to anything outside the passenger airbag (for the 2nd time).

Are we sure all first gen Tundra’s have a recall?

Dealer is always best choice, but I wasn't afraid to try Beck Arnley found on Rock Auto....on sale now for $30. I installed mine back in 4/17 and approximately 15k on them and our roads suck here, so much abuse. 2003 is it's own part # I noticed. Good luck on the small bolts, fire is always the best way. In general, some perhaps all 1st Gen's have had some form of recall that may or may not apply. In your particular case, there have been 12 recalls against 2006 Tundras according to the NHTSA. At the below NHSTA link are the 12 recalls for 2006 located toward the bottom of that page. One would have to check out each one to determine if it applies to theirs.

    https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2006/TOYOTA/TUNDRA/EXTENDED%2520CAB/RWD%252FAWD#recalls

Take for instance the LBJ Safety Recall it appears you are mentioning, the below LBJ pdf, shows which VIN numbers are affected.

A common (good) theme I read about when these LBJ’s fail is that the speeds at failure are in the 2-3mph range.

That's why it never happens to black Tundras, black Tundras skip that speed range.

    Nice!

If you don't break stuff your not driving to your full potential.

It doesn't look oem, but I'm not sure. I got the tires changed in October, and there was no issue. I'm replacing with a duralast kit till this spring/summer I have a left and right set coming from Toyota now.

If it doesn’t look or indeed isn’t OEM then you could possibly have an entire different problem altogether; previous owner installation. I’d be weary not replacing the other side if they look the same.

Colorado isn’t hard in vehicles at all. The only rust you’ll see is from someone moving here from a rust state.
