    Hi all -

I am concerned with my set up capacity:

    2019 Tundra SR-5 CC 5.7 - bigger gas tank

    towing a 2019 261rkk gvwr 7220 lbs. 31’ -

I am using a wdh. My payload on door jam is 1265. Cargo in truck = 2 persons 2 dogs

How badly over my payload capacity am with this set up? Would you be concerned with this set up?

You’re fine. You’re payload seems to be around 1,000. You’re at my comfortable limit, but plenty of others in here are running waaaaay bigger set-ups and couldn’t tell you what a WDH is...

thanks for the reply. How are you calculating to get to 1000? I’m adding things differently to be safe and I’m higher than that.

It's hard to say. Is that max payload accurate, or is there another sticker there telling you to deduct X pounds due to accessories that have been added? How big are the people and dogs? Is there any other gear in the truck, or is it all in the trailer? What's the tongue weight of the trailer? Also, you gave the GVWR on the trailer, but you need to know the actual weight of the trailer with the normal load you put in it. Also, the WDH helps with control, but it won't increase your capacities.

For ease, let's say the 1265 payload is accurate, 2 people at 180 each, and 2 dogs at 50 each. That leaves you with 805 lbs of payload. If your trailer is not overloaded and is right at it's max rating of 7330 with proper distribution there is a general (though not always accurate due to how the gear can be loaded) rule that about 10% of the gross weight is going to be the tongue weight. That'd be 733 pounds out of the remaining 805 payload. That gives you a 72 lb buffer in this EXACT scenario. If the people or dogs are bigger or smaller, or if you have stuff in the truck that isn't being accounted for, then this changes.

@ColoradoTJ I know you moved to an HD truck for towing and are way bette with the numbers stuff. Did I mess anything up here?

Your tongue weight is typically 10% of trailer, so 700ish plus stuff. You and wifey don’t count, they assume two occupants...

Ok cool - I’ve read about sae towing standards and I see conflicting info as to if you add the driver and 1 occupant or not.

This thread was built specifically for questions on this topic.
The J2807 standards are linked as well.
