Certain Tacoma models have been assembled at that MX plant for a while. Guess Toyota are just moving it all there. I never understood why they split it up like that for the same model, maybe it was a volume capacity issue.

It's a global market these days. I don't really care where the final assembly takes place. Much of the components on US vehicles are produced in MX already, then theres China for the rest

Id bet the MX plant doesn't look too much different than the San Antonio plant anyways

Timing of stopping taco production at TMMTX end of 2021 lines up with expected production increases if 2022 is the next gen tundra.

Disappointed to hear this. The better selling of the two trucks is leaving the US which has been made here for a long time and the price will keep going up anyways.

One of the things I like is that the Tundra is made in Texas. Would I buy a Tundra made in Mexico? Probably. I’m happy that if I buy a 4th gen Tundra, I’ll be rewarding the same team that put together my 2017 and 2019. Both are rock solid.

Wasn’t one of Toyota’s selling points that their trucks are American made? Toyota is not doing anything wrong, but it still seems unfair take away TACOMA with its long history of being designed and assembled in the US. And replace it with sequoia which is not very popular.

I am guessing with the redesign they are thinking the market share is going to go up and they will need the capacity. If you need the capacity, it makes sense to send the Tacoma where they are already making the Tacoma.

I sure hope so. It’s frustrating. Toyota sells every Tacoma and most are made in San Antonio alongside Tundra. But why make the 2nd plant in Mexico and ship the more profitable product and better selling product to them. Tundra and sequoia combined don’t sell even half of Tacoma.

I worked for Toyota in Princeton, Indiana when the sequoia and tundra were on the same line there. They had the ability to do it on the other side of the plant with the sienna but they didn’t do it much. Their production efficiency process abilities are pretty insane.
I’d never buy a vehicle made in Mexico though.

never good for a U.S. employee to see some of their products being shipped overseas...I'm in a different industry and I see it all the time...never a good sign imo

this post is actually the first I’ve heard about about it so I don’t know the details (I don’t work for Toyota any more), but they wouldn’t do it if there wasn’t a profitable advantage for them. It’s been 12 or so years since I worked at the Princeton plant, but at the time Toyota had the highest profitability of all standard auto manufacturers at the time. It comes down to the $$$$$ for toyota, as it does any company. No company makes a move for a long term loss. They trained me to be a six sigma master black belt, so I know that from a production/quality/profitability stand point; toyota leaves no stone unturned and looked at every stone very closely.

As a company; I’m positive that there is a financial benefit to the move. I’m sure they’ll hold their quality standards as well. I know their standards and processes so I’m sure it will remain a solid purchase for anyone that buys one.

As a customer; I’ll never buy a vehicle that isn’t made within the United States and I encourage others to do the same. Motorcycles excluded.
