Hopefully quality stays up when Tacoma production is coming all from Mexico. At least Tundra is staying in the States.

Toyota doesn't sell a lot of Sequoias so apparently Tundra production is going to be kicked up a notch it seems for the new true 3rd Gen. The Tacoma has been going downhill the last few years and high sales of the new look Colorado isn't helping at all. Some Taco's were already going to be built down south but now also in the plant where the Corolla production was to happen, barring a certain WTF phone call that no doubt will be made to Toyota higherup's by a certain individual.

Think politics. Which is a no no on this site. Therefore names have been withheld.

I just want to know what happened to the taco and tundra sharing a platform. Heard thats why it was taking so long for a true third gen tundra to come out.

    :notsure:
In my opinion bad news. Taco quality has taken a hit. Now being made in mexico doesnt help. But again, just my opinion. I know nothing. For all I know its the next best thing for them and the taco.

It sounds as though Toyota will not have to deal with any political backlash because they are increasing money spent & jobs created stateside, more than enough to offset whatever jobs move to the well established plant in Mexico. I would not worry about a Toyota that's built in Mexico being somehow worse than one built here, nope.

Exactly. I was just joking about the phone call. This news isn't too surprising. I never thought the shared platform made much sense. Why shift to a single size platform just as Ford and GM are pushing their midsized offerings bigtime? The Mexican plants were already in operation and as mentioned the San Antonio plant seems to be gearing up for more Tundra build capacity along with taking over Sequoia production which should also be additional jobs.

It will still be a shared platform, but that only means that they will use many of the same parts to produce completely different vehicles. Shared nuts, bolts, fasteners, etc...

Yes, it's a great way to reduce costs and simplify inventory.

It's still going to be Toyota mandated quality control, I would not put too much hype in it. Remember when Toyota purchased the GM plant in California, they kept all the GM workers and trained Toyota way. "That is the way."

2018 Tacoma’s sold almost 250k units (#12 of ALL vehicles sold)

It’s being replaced with Sequoia which barely sold a little more than 11k units (#202)

Tacoma sold 22 times as much as the sequoia and now they want to send all those units to Mexico. So yes, 550 direct jobs are being created on paper, but could change later. They have not talked about how this will affect indirect jobs from the hundreds of suppliers that contribute.
