Hello gang, I'm new here but am hoping I can get some advice on my 07 tundra...here is the problem (I have looked in many places and read many forums but can't seam to find a solid solution)

I get a shutter all over the truck at around 30mph and goes away after 40mph or when it changes gears.
    • RPM's do not increase when it happens
    • Temperature is where it should be
    • I have had all breaks replaced so it's not a seized piston or warped rotor
    • I have had my trans oil topped off by Toyota (I was a quart and a half low for some reason), the vibration went away and then when pulling a small trailer it came back
    • When the shutter happens I have popped it into neutral and it stops immediately
    • Truck has 117k miles
I don't have the money for a new 7k transmission. Has anyone had these same things happen and what was the fix. I've been told that I need a new trans by one guy, told it's a torque converter, told it's the brakes (hence the replacement), told it's the u-bolts...I'm just at my end with this truck but don't have the money of a new one either....any solid and knowledgeable help is appreciated.

I bought it used around 65k miles and I know they need to be serviced around 60k miles. Toyota dealership never indicated that it needed to be done or if they had done it.

Maybe check the condition of the carrier bearings, and the U-joints just to eliminate some of the other easy things.

Thanks Sean266 and Wynnded, I'll check those out. To add, the shutter/shake doesn't happen every time. It's pretty random.

If you do a diagnostic test on the transmission and find it to be bad, look for certified used ones. I was seeing ones with under 30k miles, 1800.00 or less, with a warranty.

I bet your problem is due to low fluid. This is why I had mine serviced ever 30k like the manual says.

Here is a good article on your situation:

    http://etereman.com/blog/transmission-care/5-steps-for-diagnosing-transmission-shudder

You might get lucky with a solenoid valve that is going bad, or a valvebody that needs a little help.

Hope you find out quickly, and I wouldn't wait around. One of my co-workers fragged a 3600.00 transmission over a 40.00 part since he wanted to wait and see if he could figure it out.

Thanks guy's it's not the U-bolts, I inspected them last night and they were fine. I've been looking for a TCC and cant find one at any of the parts stores near by. Is that a part that I would need to get at my local dealership?
Also, do you think hauling some wood to a family member in need would damage anything?

I took it to Toyota they said I was 1.5 quarts low on fluid but that I had no leaks, but the truck was running better than it did before, but then...then the shutter happened again...interesting...

So I did a total flush of the system and added all new fluid. I drained the first 3 quarts from the pan, replaced with new in the pan, then drained 4 quarts out of the transmission cooler till I saw the new fluid come through, then refilled with 4 quarts of new fluid, test drove it for about a mile long enough for the temp to reach normally range.

The shutter now feels worst, I didn't drop the pan so next I'll drop the pan and replace the filter and may replace the solenoid...:(

So even though I am a Tanker and used to be mechanically inclined I have been sitting behind a computer too long punching away code and have to admit I do not know enough about my truck as I should. I am having the same shudder issues. when i hover around 38-45 miles an hour. I would assume a gear change. I have not been able to figure out if its downshift or up, but like others its not constant. I took to dealership a couple of days ago. No codes whatsoever. The mechanic could not reproduce error and said am i sure i just didn't put in different gas, like im some ditzy broad or something. I assured him that i know what gas I have as i have been putting it this truck since 2012. The shop foreman took it out the next day, yesterday, and was able to replicate. They tried to hook it up again and get codes but nothing. They told me that they were working through possibles with Toyota Engineering(seems fishy but OK). They called me back and said they "think" its a tranny issue. I could pay the 6k and get a new tranny or I could start with a trans flush and see if that fixes the issue. I have driven this truck sine it had 5 miles on it and have never done a trans flush. I do also have a 7" BDS on it, so reading the above thread and others I am assuming the $250 trans flush is worth a shot right? almost paid this off and do not want a whole new set of payments.
Above I read above and saw where it said grease all your grease points, as i stated at beginning of post, i have not spent enough time under this truck so if you could elaborate on that it would be great. Also I additionally read about Street Tacos carrier bearing bracket could help the drive shudder any know about these and if they would help.

Yep I will be ordering one first thing in the morning. I had the dealership do the flush. Asked them Saturday afternoon if there were any metal shaving or anything in the fluid that would concern me. He said no or couls not answer correctly because he did not ask the technician that or the technician did not give up that info freely. He then said did the Flush and test drove the truck and the shudder is still there so it has to be the transmission and tried to sell me on the deal he could give me for a new Tranny. I do not tow, well hardly ever, or take it off road. Live in TX and weather is good. So unless I just got a bad one ( it can happen) I feel they get teh shudder have no idea what to attribute it to and say Tranny. Any thoughts from you guys? thinking now with flush done going to order the drop from Streetacos.com and install and see where it lands me.

Damn man. I checked out your profile pic and details and have to say that is a clean looking truck.

You state that you don't tow, off-road hardly ever, but have a 7" lift and bigger 295 tires. Has this setup been installed for a while? The point I am getting at is the drivetrain has been under stress the whole time. The crap thing about the Tundra axles is there is only one set of gears going in the right direction for the lifted guys (4.88).

Usually, a drivetrain shudder is a failing torque converter. However, I would make damn sure it isn't something else like a bad u-joint, mainly the rear driveshaft.

If you do find out it is the transmission, I would build one up instead of just putting in a factory replacement (unless you are at 150k miles now, had the lift on for years, and your ok with it factory).

Keep us posted on what you find.

So just left the dealership and they have no F*CKING CLUE! The service advisor told me that they are not convinced it is the transmission, but they do not know what else it could be so im still driving this little as Corolla. I asked well if they are not convinced what do they think it could be. He said that they did not know but the shop foreman is on it and they are calling the Toyota Engineering line for assistance. He said they did a fuel test to make sure it was not that. Nothing bad noticed when they did the flush. They asked if they could hold on to it for a little longer and do some more diagnostic. I always get a little skeptical at busy dealerships as every time i walk into service they are trying to get me to trade in my truck and they always have a lot of people, so the churn maintenance pretty quick. So hoping i did not go in with a slight problem and will leave with a worse one. Im going to call in a couple of hours for an update and if nothing probably get it and install Streetacos carrier bearing drop and see if that fixes the issue and if not go to a transmission shop.
Worse case scenario I have to sell it, but if it is Transmission I feel as though the Karma gods would get me if I unload to a dealership or Carmax knowing the tranny is bad. I doubt they would pick up on it as there are no codes and the issue isn't always reproducible.
TJ is there a specific test for Torque Converter failing and if failed do you know what that runs compared to a $6K replacement?

truck looks good . I would fix the issue and keep on trucking with it.
Try maybe a different dealership or more knowledgeable mechanic.

    I would agree with @TheBeast

Find a transmission shop. I'm guessing your truck is out of warranty?

    Thanks Beast,
Was about to get paint correction detail with Xpell too, then just need some good seat covers and was going to be really happy with the truck.cant say I won't change anything else but parting with this truck would tough. Gonna keep it and hopefully Streetacos part will fix as it has for others.

Yeah man, 12 with 75k on it and didn't pony up for the extended. Sure there are plenty of specialized shops around plus if I go new tranny I wouldn't go OEM.

That is how I would go then. Do the drop and see if that is your issue (2 longer bolts and 12 washers from Home Depot would work for testing purposes).

Stronger clutches, modified solenoid valves (if that is an option) and a better TC.

New gears would really be in your best interests as well. Costs a lot of money to run a highly modified truck and make it last.

So today takes the cake. I finally said I just want my truck. I go there to pick it up and walking my truck i notice a large scrape and dent in the back right panel of my truck. needles to say i was pissed as they were going to let me leave the lot with it like that and didn't tell me and then when i call they would say it wasn't them. I told the service guy and he said yeah that wasn't there before. NO SH&T!! so no they have my baby for another week to fix that. Needless to say i think i may be over this dealership. They guy called and left me a message on my phone saying i definitley need a new tranny now they are saying it may be the tranny but they are not sure, but probably. So if i would of said yes last saturday to a new tranny they would of charged me $6K and i would be non the wiser. This whole thing makes me glad my tiny office fridge has emergency booze when needed.

find a new dealership and a good mechanic. It doesn't have to be at the dealership IMO.

I was thinking along the same lines. Take it to a VERY reputable body shop and the dealership can pay that bill.

yeah i am not one to complain or ask for free crap ever, but the old lady is calling BS. did a tranny flush cause they said it is definitely the tranny, tried to sell me a new trans, did a tire rotation without asking me (charging me $30) oil change at $75 I use synthetic and too lazy to do myself so that is about right and now the dent in my truck. She said that were not going to pay anything because it has all been fishy. Not gonna argue with a Latino women. I will let her do her thing and just not go back there again. Yeah i'm whooped, but believe me its worth it..LOL

Hi, I see it's been a few months since the last reply, but I had exactly the same problem with my 2007 Toyota Tundra. I had it looked at by 3 different mechanics, one of those was Toyota, to confirm that the transmission/torque converter was going out. I had the transmission rebuilt. .. . .and that's when the fun began. I got back the truck and it felt "weird" at first, but then after a few weeks it began to feel like I was just being rear-ended every time I hit 3rd gear. The kick is pretty uncomfortably significant. I took it back to the transmission specialist that rebuilt it. It's been there for 2 weeks and 3 days at this point. The transmission was rebuilt 3 more times, but same problem each time. The specialist even took the truck to Toyota and Toyota told them that everything is correct, but I'm guessing the "mechanical demon" has possessed the dang thing. Has anyone else experienced this?

I was just ready to say torque converter. My 2010AWD Honda Crosstour has this issue and it is a recall problem.
