So I live in upstate Ohio, where it's cold right now. I have never messed with Clay bar and I have never owned a white vehicle. Reason being I never messed with Clay bar is because I lived in southern VA forever and never had a vehicle with white as paint. Well now that I own a white tundra I have finally seen and learned what IFO (Industrial Fallout) is haha. Can anyone give me advice and or brand names of Clay bar? When should you use Clay bar? where should you use it at (indoor? warm wether? certain temp?) Is there a certain time I should use Clay bar before the IFO on my truck becomes irreversible? Again Im sorry if this is a newb post but I figure people on here would know best. Thanks again guys!

When you’re washing your truck, move your fingertips across your paint and see if it’s smooth or not. If not, time to clay. Some people clay once a year regardless.

any brand is fine. I use mothers but it’s all the same.

    Remember to follow with wax.

I highly recommend looking into synthetic clay mitts or towels. Way faster and easier, and last a long time.
You can get a nanoskin auto scrub clay mitt on sale right now at detailed image https://www.detailedimage.com/NanoSkin-M54/AutoScrub-Fine-Wash-Mitt-P701/
Or check out autogeek, I have the blackfire one which isn't so great and just got the speed master combo that I need to try. Nanoskin is the standard aka best synthetic clay just FYI

IronX helps a ton, especially on a white truck. Its nice to dissolve that crap before claying

I use Meguires. I use Optimum No Rinse mixed as a QD, or I just use a Meguires quick detailer.

If the paint feels rough, like others said, it’s time to claybar. You’ll be amazed at how much crud is on the paint and won’t come clean from washing alone.

I use mother’s clay bar kit. the clay bar is softer when the weather is warm.

I use Nanoskin Autoscrub Fine Foam Pad with my DA polisher.
A lot faster than using a clay bar.

Use it with Nanoskin Glide lubricant, it is a concentrate so you'll mix it with water according to what you need it for.

The surface test I use is put your hand in a plastic bag and lightly feel the paint surface.
You can feel how smooth the surface is or isn't with your fingertips.

Ohio here also. As others in the tread above have said, yes use the IronX and then clay bar, but with it now being cold here in Ohio, you may want to wait for spring temps to avoid freezing your fingers off. Use a good detail spray as lube with the clay bar. Being white, it will be very obvious where to spend extra time with the clay bar. The spots will show easily, and you can also feel with a fingernail too. The clay bar results will be amazing once done!! Just be sure to use a good sealer or wax afterwards. It really isn't as bad of a job as it sounds. It does go quickly, once you are onto it

I had no idea you could use the Nanoskin pad on a DA polisher. Pretty cool!

Still waiting on a deal on the Griots G9 but so far no sales to be found.

I just got a Nanoskin mitt (fine - AS-016) for $28.50 from Amazon. Way cheaper than Autogeek and other places. While I haven't used it yet, it will be with a spray made with Wolfgang Uber Rinseless Wash.

I use the mother's speed clay 2.0. like some people said above, take a plastic bag and run it across the paint with your fingers, if it feels gritty, then it's time. The mitt is probably the way to go as far as time, but I do like going over it slowly so I can see areas that need more work or less when it's time to paint correct

I have a nanoskin pad for my DA. It is fast and works well but kinda scares me cuz I don't have any feel and I worry about marring. That said, it hasn'tcaused any damage so its probably just all in my head

I just did used a clay bar for the first time not too long ago. I believe they make them in different grades: Fine, medium and heavy. Since my Toyota Corolla XRS was a 2005 I purchased a medium. I think that choosing the right grade may be more important than the brand name.

The second I learning is to use PLENTY of lubricant. More lubricant can be purchased. I have used detailing sprays as lubricant.

Last bit of advice, if you drop it, throw it out. You don't want the grit now on the bar to ruin your paint.

After I clay bar, I wipe the area I just did with a towel so it doesn't dry on the car. I rewash the car and then wax.

I also have a nanoskin mitt ( fine grade) easy to use and does a great job . Just make sure you use plenty of lube.

I have used the nanoskin pad with my DA a couple times on my wife's black Sequoia and 2 or 3 on my old MGM tundra and never introduced any marring. I just make sure I use plenty of clay lube.

Do you guys wash your truck and then clay bar? My truck is fairly clean, could use a California Duster then clay bar. Or should I wash first?

Definitely need to wash first and not a bad idea to use a spray on iron remover before you clay.

Wash first, Iron X before clay helps also.

And....please don’t use a California Duster on your paint.

To be honest I can’t say for sure. The guy who taught me and several of us here about detailing recommended against it. I always took his word for it. You have a light color, so it may be ok. Mine is black, so pretty much anything will.
