I own a Auto Repair shop in the Tampabay area and service Tundra's from time to time. Most take around 8 qts of oil, but have come across some that take around 10 qts. The 10 qt Tundra's have all been 4x4 and seem to have a larger Oil Cooler and a Tow Package.

WTF? 10 qts?!? No way...that engine was overfilled. Period.

My 2013 crewmax with 5.7 and tow package uses just over 8 qts.I always put my oil level at the top mark of the dip stick.I have found that putting in 8 qts and let it run a few minutes, then recheck and fill to top mark on dipstick .mine is also a 4x4.

Odd how there are some many capacities for the same engine?

    Hello gang,

I have the 2011 4x4 TRD Warrior with the 5.7. Which has the engine oil cooler and towing package. Every oil change with oil filter has taken 9 quarts of oil to bring the indication of oil at the upper level indent on the dipstick. Oil changes are when the maintenance needed light comes on or 5000 miles, which ever comes first over her 235000 miles . She sets in my garage or shop overnight to drain. My owners manual displays the 7.9 capacity for an engine fill with filter change. No mention of the oil cooler but 1 additional qt brings me to full dent mark. So...8 qts plus 1 qt totals 9 qts of oil. The used oil fills the 5 qt jug and 1 gallon jug for disposal. Otherwise I am just over the lower dent mark on the dipstick if I just use the 8 qts. No additional oil is added between changes. Mostly freeway miles with horse and hay trailer towing. Did use 0-20w synthetic just for gas mileage gimmick but switched to my 0-40w synthetic for heavy engine and freeway work.

    Just my 2 cents.

Weird that your 2019 manual and mine show two different things. I wonder what Toyota is doing here?

    My '16 also shows 7.4/7.9 ...

Maybe as a precaution (for the average driver) they are specifying 1/2 qt. more in case the engine burns some oil during the 10K miles oil change interval. That way you don't get below the L mark. We keep hearing that some engines (very few?) have been burning oil ...

Maybe a slightly bigger engine oil cooler. I doubt there has been a major redesign ...

Either way imho, 1/2 qt. up or down from the imaginary F mark shouldn't cause any issues.

Changed mine yesterday along with filter. 1st time since I got it. Had it up on ramps and leaning towards the driver side due to the slope of the driveway so estimate a pint still in the pan due to the plug being on the passenger side. Dropped 7 qts in it wasn't showing on the dip stick. Took it off the ramps and parked parallel to the slope of the driveway, which basically levels my truck. Oil was just touching the tip of the stick. Added another quart and now is at the top mark as in full.

Looks like the range of my dipstick from the very tip (below the low mark)to the full mark is a quart.

Drove 50 miles and checked hot when I got home and still at the full mark.

On the other side of the story is replaced the plastic oil filter cap with the OEM aluminum. I will never take mine to the dealership for a change. Damn cover was over tightened from where they serviced it.

Does it really matter what the #'s are? If you're not leaking, not burning oil, just fill enough to be near or at the top line on your dipstick. Use the manual as a reference point to get a figure on when you need to start checking your dipstick. Also after filling your oil, let it sit a little bit before checking the level.

I agree with the 8.5, but just had my free 2 year oil change at the dealer. They said they put in 9 qts. Deciding if I should suck out a half qt.

I have a 2017 5.7 with tow package and change the oil myself. With filter it takes 8.5, which put the oil right at the full mark. I think 7.9 would be fine because with that much oil, (compared to an older V8 with 5 quarts) you probably would see just a slight difference on the dip stick.

Just had my 1st oil change on my new to me 2nd owner, 2014 1794 with tow package done at Ourisman Toyota Chantilly VA yesterday.

Paper work showed 8qrts added. I checked when they brought it around to me. Oil was slightly below halfway between the marks, and super thin/clear, could barely see it on the stick.

0w20 oil is crap for most engines BTW. I will be using 5w30 going forward, like in all my 4Runners for many years. That 0w20 gimmick oil is way to thin, and provides no calculatable fuel mileage gains.

I have the dreaded timing chain tensioner rattle at cold start. When I got the truck, I noticed the oil was half way between the marks. I added 1 qrt 5w30 to bring it to the top mark on dipstick. This quiets the timing tensioner rattle considerably, almost completely. This may be the cause of many folks rattle, low oil level. Try it if you want and judge for yourself. If this does not quiet yours, it's probably time to repair it now.

I had them pull the truck back in an add more oil. It took 1 full qrt to get from mid between the dots to top dot on dipstick.

    Total 9qrts.
    I have 59285 miles.

Proper oil change is to pull filter, pull drain plug. Drain for 10-15mins.
Replace filter with new, replace and tighten oil plug to 30ft lbs with new crush washer if equipped.

Add oil amount per manual. Run engine 10mins, turn off, let sit for 10mins, check level, add half qrt at a time until just at top mark.

This is how I have changed oil for 30 years. Including 20+ years as mechanic, service writer, service manager, new and used car salesman, autoparts salesman, and manager.

Works every time, for every vehicle that has an oil filled engine. Don't ask me anything about electric windup vehicles lol.

This is way to much oil buddy.

The thin 0w20 shit is VERY hard to see on the stick when new, I had to look at mine 6 times to be sure where it was actually at.
Unless you have some huge aftermarket oil cooler add on, you need drain 2 qrts out asap.
You will blow seals and cause leaks being 2 qrts over full.

This is exactly correct if you have the tow package. 9 qrts.
Drive with confidence, unless you are SURE it is showing above the top mark on the dipstick.

2014 White 1794 "SnowWhite aka the Frost Queen"
Bilstein 6112/5160, 3 CB front shims, SPC UCA's, CB +3 rear Shackles, total 3/2 lift, Dif drop, CB Carrier bearing drop, Fortin Evo One remote start from Tech12volts PnP, AMP research Powersteps PnP, Vent shades, Tinted windows, Black/Red lined cupholder inserts, Proclip USA dash phone mount with Scosche Magic Mount wireless magnetic phone charger, Stock wheels/tires for now.
Keep in mind, these added new oil amounts depend GREATLY on how much you got out of the engine when draining, and whether you are on truly flat ground.

Also front end high, or front end low, affects this also as you are tilting the engine pan. So your lift matters.

I have the front lifted 3in with Bilstein 6112's spacers, and SPC UCA's, and Coachbuilder +3 rear shackles for 1.75in rear lift.
My truck has very slight rake now, maybe 1in or less rear high, I have not measured it, I like the look now so I don't care about the measurements.

Bottom line, flat ground, proper drain and wait, refill with amount per factory specs, start and run 10-15mins.
Let sit 10-15mins, check level and add 1/2 qrt at a time until you are just at top mark on dipstick.

I neglected to realize lifted trucks vs stock may get different readings and amounts needed in my previous statements.
However, using my industry standard oil change method, you will fill your vehicle just right each time, regardless of your lift and rake conditions.

Manuals and dealer specs will list stock vehicle specs with no tow package, or lift. Start there and add as needed to reach top mark on dipstick.

Always use my posted industry standard method for oil changes on all vehicles, just like blizz86 wrote.
