I own a pool repair business in Orlando, FL. If you have questions, I'll try and assist where I can. Majority of my business is spent in residential in ground pools. Vinyl above ground pools are rare in my market.

General Comments About Pets in Pools - Sanitation Issues
An average size dog is equal to three humans in terms of the stuff they will bring along with them into a pool. If you have more than one dog in the pool, multiply that number by three and you will soon learn why you are using more sanitizer or chlorine than normal. The fact is, a dog will introduce fecal matter to the pool pretty regularly, along with insects, body oils, dirt, and who knows what else. This is especially true if they are primarily outside dogs. Animals always have small particles of fecal matter stuck in their fur.

This fecal matter will contaminate the pool's water, potentially aiding in the transmission of Recreational Water Illnesses (RWI's), such as E. coli, Giardia, Hepatitis A, and Cryptosporidium.
If you think that you and your kids never ingest any of that pool water, guess again. Those 'external additives' will raise pH more quickly and consume free available chlorine rapidly. Germs from other swimmers and unsafe water supplies can easily contaminate pool water, especially if it isn't properly disinfected.

Contaminated recreational water can cause a variety of ailments and diseases, such as diarrhea, skin, ear, and upper respiratory infections, particularly if the swimmer's head is submerged. Large outbreaks of disease are rare and they don't typically happen in residential settings, but homeowners should be aware of just how contagious pathogens are when they are waterborne.

So I have a plaster pool. Old school white. Plaster is still in ok shape (redone in 2014) but I keep it open year round and some debris that settled on the bottom has left stains and streaks. Any way to lift that and brighten the plaster without renovating the entire pool? Thanks for being a resource!

Possible, and now is the right time of year to do it. Will need a stain test kit to determine what chemicals will react to stain. This time if year is good for you, because the chlorine level will need to go to zero, and the PH will need to swing significantly to get the chemicals to effect the stain.

    We use this kit: https://pinchapenny.com/products/stain-id-test-kit

    Jack's Magic makes a similar kit: https://jacksmagic.com/product/stain-id-kit/

I know we don't have any stores in your area, so look for something like that. Once you determine what works, the store will have a step by step process to attack the stain. Understand the chemicals are not inexpensive, and results aren't always what you may expect.

Look at the instructions attached for the Jack's kit. Make sure you prep the pool accordingly, otherwise you are wasting your time and money.

This brings up a question for a potential buyer in AZ or FL (or down south). I can only imagine how much it costs to repair a pool left without maintenance for a long period of time. I suppose you do pool inspections for home inspections before purchase?

We do. Most pools here in Florida are covered though and open all year round, like mine.

You left out one of the major problems you have by letting your pets swim in the pool. It will tear up your pump, whether it's in ground or above. I still let my lab swim in it for short periods

I need to change the lighting fixtures in my salt water pool. The one furthest from the pull box (opposite side of pool) cord is stuck. Is there a magic soapy water mix that you have found to loosen up? What about the industrial "slime" products marketed for electrical / conduit work? Any suggestion?

When you say the fixtures, do you mean the entire light head with the cord, or just pull the head up to surface for bulb change in an incandescent or LED screw in bulb?

Entire light head with cord. They leak and take on water through the sealed cord. Have verified the seal under water, bubbles from cord seal.

Good post! I worked in pool construction and service years ago (concrete/gunite pools) and have owned pools for years. I’ve never had a pool turn green or cloudy. I would run a 220V pump 24/7 and use an inline chlorine feeder. The FROG system works great.

The following information is offered with no guarantees, and assuming you understand electricity and know how to isolate any electricity to the equipment you are touching. I highly encourage a pool service technician and or an electrician if you have any doubt about your electric knowledge. You do this at your own risk, and I do not encourage you to do this event.

The cord lengths come in 50, 100, 150, and 200. Always go high, not low on length or close to exact amount of length. There should be a ground bond wire attached to the niche and also attached by the equipment to the remaining the Bond wires at the pool equipment. After ensuring all electric is off at the breakers, disconnect the light line from the junction box at the pool equipment. Chip out all the epoxy in the niche where the cord comes through the new niche. You should be able to see at least 3/4 conduit diameter for the pool light and the bond wire. We then cut the cord at the light and attach the new cord to the remaining wire. We pull from the equipment side through the conduit and leave as at least two feet on the niche above the water line so you can service the pool light at the deck.

This is the tool we use to pull the wire: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008KNKRDO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If the old wire gets caught on the bond wire and starts to cause friction and gets stuck, we use: https://www.amazon.com/Synthetic-Lu...keywords=wire+lube&qid=1578861047&s=hi&sr=1-1

If all else fails and we have to pull both the old wire, Bond wire, and pull new wire, we use a 100' fiberglass fish tape to go through the conduit and start over from the niche to the equipment.

Hope this makes sense. I put two guys on this and expect 2.5 hours if all goes well. If the conduit breaks, we dig it up and repair. If the wire breaks we pull the bond and start over with new Bond.

Bring your "Hardness" levels down and they will probably go away. They will get dissolved. Keep hardness lower to prevent.

Calcium can generally be chemically treated unless the buildup has been going on for years untreated. This is typically due to poor PH balance, and or improper curing of the finish. Some regions I hear in Texas are really bad to due to the materials used and the water composition. I've heard of bead blasting it and sealing, yet never seen it or know the results.

I'll talk to my pool people and see what they say about lowering the hardness.
We have a raised hot tub and it sheet flows over a piece of granite when the pump is running. That makes the tile under it look like crap. I dont think that people who installed the tile sealed it.

We always see calcium on new build or refinishes. The treatment to harden the finish is high Acid content for four weeks after the finish is set. That and the daily brushing makes the excess calcium stay away. Since yours is on a spillover and was not wet while curing, this is probably the main cause for it to be there and growing like stalactite.

Thanks man! I'll talk with my pool people about upping the acid. You say to do this after the finish is set, as in when its brand new? Worth doing it now (pool is 3.5 years old).
