I have a Viofo A119. Pretty happy with it so far. Here's a vid from it of a dickhead garbage truck driver. According to the company, after I sent them this video this guy was suspended, had to undergo remedial training and required a supervisor to ride along for a little while. :D

Been happy with this. Excellent image. Completely hidden behind my mirror. Heck, I even forget it’s there most of the time. The app to operate could be better. 88AFE647-EF47-40F8-A661-6A33990DC661.jpg

For $130 Canadian or roughly $100USD, I picked up an Anker Roav S1 from Amazon.ca, delivered today. We have had good luck with Anker in the past and they have a pretty solid customer service and I'll have 30 days to try it out with Amazon. I figure I'd rather buy a new one every couple years for $150, than drop $500 on one and have it be outdated before I want to splurge on another one

Installed today, USB connection for now and all wires are hidden and out of the way. Camera is very stealthy if that matters and seems secure in the base, so shouldn't jiggle around. I read the audio sucks, but I'm more interested in the video. I decided I wanted one after my wife got her car totalled (not her new Rav) and the driver was disputed it was his fault, when it clearly was.

I'll test out the quality and report back after a bit of use. Parking mode works with the built in battery. Just hope it stands up to the extreme cold.

Anker recommends using the existing cable and connection, but I think I'm going to grow tired very quickly, of loosing a USB outlet or using their 12v dongle adapter doohickey.

What would you recommend for video recording that is low tech and high resolution?
I don't want anything fancy, I just want to record what is happening in front of me.
GPS, Bluetooth, etc. do not interest me.

For me, I had it narrowed down to Viofo, Anker and Yi. Chinese brands, widely used, inexpensive and simple to use.

I wasn't interested in BT or parking but it came with it. It has an Overlay on the video for speed, which can either come in handy or probably edited out if needed.

I'm going to test it out in a few lighting conditions, but don't want to upload video to YT. Let me know if you are interested in a link to the video if I upload it to a cloud.

I know one thing...the software and interface for the Anker blows. I tried to d/l a short 8min video off it and you have to sit in the car and do it over wireless connection. I got 3% done and was in there for 4min in -30 temps and gave up. Luckily, you can easily remove the SD card and pop it into a PC.

*** Video kind of stinks too. I can hardly make out plates when stopped at a light 10' in front to car, let alone when moving .

This one has been uninstalled and is going back to Amazon, it's a stinker.

For anyone who comes across this thread looking for budget/comparisons, I found this video to be informative. Apologies in advance for the guys puberty-esque squeaker voice.

Thanks for posting that video, it was helpful. Between my truck and wife's Audi I have almost $1K invested in front and rear dash cam hardware. Not worth it. The guy in the video has a Canadian accent I think. Not hating just saying.

Yeah, I have been looking into dash cams as I've had low expectations of humanity and have had several people hit and run my vehicles. Really hoping the sentry mode tesla uses will inspire better dashcams aftermarket.

As for his voice it was the pitch that got me, as the accent is pretty mild. I didn't even notice the accent, but the really high voice that cracks a lot was... difficult for me.

I went through my own variety of testing budget 4K dash cams.

The winner is the Rove 4K for $110 - often with coupon discounts on Amazon.

Two in each vehicle, front and rear facing separately recording full 4K 30fps without audio on because what a waste of space, lol. New $30 256GB microSD cards get swapped in every spring because the extreme negative cold temps in winter tend to shorten the lifespan of memory cards, not the camera's fault.

I've never been personally hit, but on more than one occasion my cameras have provided identifying video to provide witness in hit and runs. Nothing that I'm aware was used in a courtroom, but definitely good enough to get an insurance agency to accept a claim I'd wager.

I use AddAFuse's to tap into the circuits for the accessory 12V lines, these are very low power draw cameras, no problems there ever. This switches the camera on and off with ignition. No parking "protection" but I almost exclusively park in either a workplace ramp or my own driveway so I'm not worried. They can be set up to offer that option but I'm more worried about my truck starting in the cold with a nice full battery, versus the parking protection recording options.

This is nice! Where’d you get that bracket for the rear camera?

My advice is to pick a camera from an established company. So many of the cheaper cameras come and go and you won't be able to get software updates or any form of customer service.

That said, I use a garmin. A bit pricey but the app is great and it's super easy to use. Plus garmins customer service is awesome

Blackvue Dr 900x....It's a good cam, the only thing I don't like is it takes videos in 1 minute increments, I don't know if this is a default with all cams, but it is stupid....

I also use the Viofo and I found a min-USB power adaptor that splits the connection to the rear view mirror. It took me 10 seconds to plug it in and it took me longer to get the window mount nice and square.
