I was given almost $22K for my 2010 with 108K miles. I thought that was great!

I traded in my 2004 Tundra in 2015 when it had just over 100K miles on it and the dealer gave me $16,500! They definitely hold their value extremely well.

Tundras do depreciate on average slower than other trucks but your trade in value doesn't tell you the real value.

Could be that dealer will sell your trade in for several thousand less than they "bought" it back from you for. They just made up for it by selling you another new truck.

Typical sales trick. They make it seem like your used vehicle is in high demand so they can give you top dollar for it, but you end up paying more on the new vehicle than if you went in as a cash buyer with no trade in and good enough negotiating skills.

This is true to an extent, except that the private party values are generally higher than similar trucks as well. That's beside the point, if you had an equal mileage/condition Tundra and Ram 1500 and took them to a dealer to get a value, the Tundra will get you more.

To avoid the dealer games, don't focus on the price of your trade or the price of the one you are buying. Focus on the out the door cost. I took my trades in, told them I wanted "that" truck and that the OTD cost had to be lateral move for my total debt. They could over or undervalue the truck or trades, and use any fees they wanted as long as my cost to hit the road was acceptable. It eliminated all games and back and forth because they had to tell me up front if they could do it. Just decide what you are willing to pay OTD for the vehicle you want (how come to that number is up to you) and see if they can do it. This only works if you are willing to walk away.

In the end, if you want max $$$ out of a vehicle you are getting rid of you should private sell it. You'll get more than trade in 99% of the time.

You're kind of talking about different things but I agree. I was only referring to the OP referencing his $27k trade in versus $29k original purchase price. When you are tradinn in to buy another vehicle, the trade in price does not tell the whole story.

Go to a dealer and ask for a trade in price but no intention of buying another vehicle from them. You will get a very different result.

That depends on the dealer. I went to a toyota dealer for valuations on my trades (not toyotas) and they gave me a buy it now price. They said they could go 500 more if I was going to buy a vehicle from them. Not a huge amount. I do think they would have tried the exact games you describe had I bought from them though. Got a skeezy vibe and wound up buying from Bountiful Toyota instead.

Toyota certainly keep the value better than just about any other vehicle.
I traded a 16-year old Tacoma when I bought the Tundra. I paid $19,600± for the Tacoma new in 2002. 16 years later I got $9,800 for a trade (which matched the KBB value±). That's about 50% loss over 16 years or $600 depreciation per year on average. For the fun of it I looked up a 2002 chevy S-10 and a Dodge Dakota with similar trim level, and they were at about $3,000 and $2,500 trade-in values.

    upload_2020-1-3_15-46-44.jpg

Dealer asked $10,999 for it. (If you ignore the bogus $14,559 that they begin with)

Happy you did well on your trade, but over that time horizon, inflation matters. $19600 in 2002 dollars is $28,465.71 in today's dollars.

    .
I agree. I took the check anyway. The dealer
Will make their money. either way. I always use this dealer. Third purchase now.

That's irrelevant. The point is that it held it's value better than any other similar truck on the market.

I'm that case if you sold it to the dealer for a check back instead of adding it in to the vdeal on a new purchase then that's pretty good

That's slightly out of context for what he meant. The other trucks would have the same inflation, so the gap in value would remain proportional. It doesn't actually affect the point he is trying to make.

Fair enough. The point I am making is that, in terms of today’s dollars, the OP’s truck depreciated by far more than $600/year. Again, I am happy that the OP got what he did for his truck.

You totally missed the point. Don't over think it. It's just a casual discussion about Toyotas holding their value.

speaking of depreciation....if you have a 2016 tundra platinum crewmax 4wd and a 2016 tundra platinum crewmax 2wd, is the rate of depreciation the same between the two if everything is equal expect for drivetrain?

It depends on the market/location. In rural areas there will be a bigger market for 4wd for people who want a used vehicle for hunting, farming etc. In urban areas people need a used truck for home depot runs and 2wd is okay; they won't pay more for 4wd.
When you use Kelly Blue book or other similar sites to get your trade-in value it asks for your zip code, since location makes a difference.
It's a supply and demand thing.
