My wife currently drives a 2014 4Runner SR5. It’s got 82,000 miles and overall has been good for the family. But, the mileage is getting a little high. I originally paid $26,400 (cash) for her SR5. As we get closer to 100K miles, i feel like the value really drops.

Our friends and neighbors also have a 2014 4Runner but it’s a Limited with 55,000 miles. It’s in great shape, single owner, lives in a garage and been serviced at Dealer. I think they want appx $25,000 for their 4Runner. Theirs is Blizzard Pearl and with the Limited package, that would offer my wife some upgraded features that the SR5 does not have. She’ll get: sunroof, leather seats, push button start and a couple of other things.

I have no idea what our SR5 would actually sell for. KBB is around $21 - $22K but I’m not sure if you could get that much given that it has 82,000 miles. It would be nice to get the Limited and drop back down to 55,000 miles.

We can ‘afford’ to do the deal… but should we?? If we pay $25,000 for the Limited, I’m thinking we might have to come out of pocket from $2,000 up to $4,000 depending on what our SR5 could sell for. And we have to pay the transfer tax in Georgia on private party sale when you go to get the Title (is that ad valorem?).

Obviously, I love my wife and would do anything for her. It sort of feels like it will cost us money to get the same model car… and is that smart. Yes, more features and less miles but they’re both 2014’s.. so same car in my mind.

Would welcome your feedback for or against this deal.

(this is what she's got now)

I would keep your SR5. Better color. 82k isn't much.

That truck is barely used. Only has another 120K before it will need some decent work. That would be a great ride for my wife. Her RX330 is rolling up 250K and is a 2006

That sr5 is hardly broken in. You will NOT take as much of a hit as you think. My 4runner was 5 years old and over 100k miles when a guy ran a red light and totaled it - got 75% of what I PAID for it. In my opinion, keep the sr5 and mod it how you want. Katzkin leather interior will cost about $1500 and the limited wheels are hideous in my opinion. You will spend less money in the long run that way and still have a sweet ride/.

Has the RX330 been a good car? any major repairs with that many miles?

Yes at about 225. Steering rack, CV shafts, control arms, struts. Its front wheel drive and changing the valve cover gaskets on the rear bank was a PITA. The plugs back there would be another PITA is you were only doing them. Todays equivalent is the HIghlander or RX350. It's needing oil pan gaskets, but I'm sick of messing with it.

I'm really trying to get my wife to think about the 4 runner. But she's a Lexus snob.

Nah, she didn't want to believe me when I told her that it's a Toyota with a good paint job with a nicer interior. She'd destroy a Humvee

I’d hold onto it. My wife’s 4runner (16’ SR5 Prem) is about 60k and it runs like a champ. One of the Dr’s that works with my wife has a 4th gen 4Runner and he’s clocking over 200k and still drives it. These 4Runner are bullet proof.

If your wife was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee or something along that line with that many miles, I’d say you are on borrowed time and you hate your wallet.

See what you could get for yours; maybe an even trade other than a few thou like you said. White is a much better color too :D Upgrading your here and there will add up to the $2-$4K very easily anyhow.

Keep the one you have and save the 2-4k for a few mods and in case anything goes wrong in the future. 82K is nothing on a Toyota your wife can drive that another 120k with no problem.

I think we have all been conditioned to be so scared of the 100k mile mark. Domestic automakers build their cars to last 100k, not toyota

Your 4runner is fine, if your wife likes it then keep it and save the money

Well first, happy wife... happy life. She wants it. Don’t think about it, just do it. Lol

More pragmatically, the 4.0L / 5 Speed part-time 4WD system is absolutely bulletproof... and 82K is nothing on the truck itself... barely broken in. You’ve owned it and know it... keep it forever.

Then again, does the Limited have the full time 4WD system? If it does, that’s a pretty nice upgrade on its own. Add the push button start, leather, heated seats from the limited.. I can see the appeal. But I guess if I was going to upgrade, I’d hold off until the last model year of this 5th gen and grab one. Toyota is sure to decontent and cheapen the underpinnings of the next model as they’re beginning to do to the Tundra in favor of more technology, lighter but more expensive materials, etc. My .02 anyway.

The Limited is 2WD, just like the SR5. Would be nice to have 4WD but it’s gonna end up being a grocery getter anyway

I’d consider 82k low mileage on a 4Runner. It’s not a Chevy! I had 275k on my 2000 when I sold it and I know it is still running for the current owner

To get a good idea on value of SR5, get a Carmax or similar offer. Also hear Vroom has good offers and will come pick it up.

My vehicles don't even get considered until 200k.

I guess if you need the confidence of a sub 100k vehicle, I'm not gonna stand in your way.

Me, I got a cell phone and a reason to call in sick.

I feel what you’re saying and tend to agree but this one would really be for my wife. I guess i’m making the mistake of trying to rationalize the situation.

If you can make it happen within reason, go for it.
Me, thinking < $5k, preferably around $2-4k. But you may have a different number in mind.

Spot on. I was also thinking less than $5k with around $3k being the target.
