I have downloaded and used the Remote Start app twice now. The lock/unlock works perfectly. The remote start always turns the truck on...but when I try to open the door, wether by key fob or the app, the truck shuts off????
What am I missing...or is this normal???

Unfortunately I believe this is normal behavior for the 2020 push to start trucks.

My 2015 Tundra Pro does the same thing, was told it's normal.

What would be the reasoning behind this??? It seems dumb to me.

I have no idea, that's just what the dealer told me. Also wish it would stay running longer. Only runs for about 3 to 4 minutes.

Toyota remote starts turn off the engine when you open the door. Stupid imo, runs for 10 min

I have to get a Toyota Corporate answer! So my truck runs for 10 minutes....I unlock it...it shuts off....and I start it 10 seconds later, while heat, radio, gps, etc all has to reset!
Makes no sense...I’ll dig into it!

All Toyota/Lexus with SmartKey will shut off as soon as you open the door, with no way around it. From what I've read, it's a security feature. My wife's Highlander does the same thing.

I guess the factory remote start and some others on the market do the same with traditional key Tundras, but Fortin and a few others allow the keyed option to keep running until the system times out or the brake is pressed before the key is inserted.

The app is a kluge of logic. I tried it for a week and just deleted it. The reviews on Apple App Store all say the same thing. Not sure if the “shut off on door open” is a bug or not, but they’re acting like it’s normal. Mine started two or three times and then got stuck thinking the truck was running and only would let me “shut off” the truck. The unlock and lock requests worked sometimes. Total joke. Not to mention it took the app forever to send the request and confirm it worked.

I've driven Toyota's and Lexus exclusively for almost 30 years. The engine shut-off when you open the door after remote starting is normal. Sucks, but normal. You can start the engine twice for 10 minutes each using the app. It will not allow you to start a 3rd time unless you entire the vehicle. As for the app, seems to working perfectly for me. In fact, much better than the Lexus version. You have to "re-fresh" the screen when you go back into it. If using an iPhone, pull down on your screen or push the re-fresh button on the center right of the screen when you first open it.

Horrible feature! I use it to warm the car when its cold outside but it would be much better if i could toggle off the feature that turns off the car when unlocked.

This is why I would never have another Toyota remote start again. Wasn’t happy when I saw it on the 2020’s. My infinity didn’t do that, neither does my wife’s Ford Escape. Couldn’t stand it on the highlander we had.

I agree, it sucks the way they designed it, however, I wouldn't let this be my deciding factor when purchasing a vehicle. I'd rather have it the way its currently designed than not...but I live in MN!

Yes, it's a designed safety issue, to avoid anybody (especially a small kid) getting the the car and driving off with it. In many states/cities it is against the law to remote start your call because of car thieves, so I suppose this is a way to get around it. Whether it makes sense is debatable. But the 10 minute shut-off rule (also designed) is pretty stupid. I guess there are some remote start kits that get around this but I've not looked into it.

Once again, you have to depress the brake pedal to get the vehicle out of park, and with any other remote start vehicle I've owned, this shuts the engine off.

I had a ford escape. Had....POS,i had reprogrammed it to stay running when the door was opened.was kind of a work around i guess. the dealer said no way to do it. Youtube showed me how.My Grand prix was the same way. what i liked was i could restart the remote feature at a store etc..remove the key and they would stay running. timed out at 10mins roughly but that way i didnt have to restart it everytime i got in or out of them.

My wife has an escape and it never shuts off when you open the door. I think her escape has a way better remote start than Toyota. It’s really not that difficult. Remote start it, get in, push the pushbutton start with key in vehicle and everything is fine.

I have an Armada with remote start, push button start, and smart key that does not go through that nonsense. It only shuts off the engine if you don’t step on the brakes and push the starter button before shifting out of park. I have the fortin unit on my Tundra. It only shuts of the engine if you step on the brake pedal before you insert and turn the key. So sort of the opposite between the two, which I seem to get wrong 100% of the time when I switch between the two. However, both are better than the Toyota factory remote start.

must have all been Toyota factory remote starts. I had two F150’s before this, did not shut off when opening/unlocking door or pressing the brake. I have COMPUSTAR on my ‘18 tundra and it doesn’t shut off either. My friends ‘17 platinum shuts off when you unlock the truck he said it drives him crazy

Its a Toyota thing on all push to start vehicles. It beats cutting into your wiring harness to try and complete a "key take over" where you can get in and keep it running with a key. Not worth it.

It most definitely is a Toyota thing, and other domestic vehicles with push to start do not shut off when door is opened.

Domestic vehicles you either put the key in the igniting and turn it to run, or push the start button before you press the brake to shift out of park to keep the vehicle running

Subaru’s remote start system does the same thing as Toyota. It is annoying but in cold weather it still serves its purpose.
