Has anyone ever bought a vehicle thru Ebay motors? Was looking for a DD and found a 2002 Camry 135K miles for $800. Being sold because of divorce and she just wants it gone. Sounds like a good deal to me. I found on craigslist, but the lady is actually moving it thru Ebay. Just wondering if anyone has bought a vehicle thru there and if there is anything I should watch our for. Let me know if anyone has had any experience with this. Thanks and advanced.

Sold a BMW on there about 7-8 years ago. Shipped it to Texas. Everything went smooth but between eBay and paypal, they gash you with fees. Think it totals out at like 13%. You might want to see if you can buy it through paypal and skip the eBay thing (10%). Save her 5% and you 5%.

I just sold a Tundra on eBay, ebay motors charged me $125. That's the cost of selling a vehicle if it sales for more than $2,000. They don't do the 10% fee on vehicles.

I've purchased two vehicles through ebay. The first was a Subaru wagon thing for my wife from Florida. Colorado seems to be Subaru hq, and everyone is overly proud of theirs. Bought the one in FL sight unseen, from a dealer that had 100% positive ebay feedback, researched their operation online and saw no red flags - and bought it sight unseen. It worked out well and even with shipping, saved a couple of grand and everything worked out well. Actually sold it for a few hundred more than I paid for it - after the wife put about 30k miles on it.

Second one is the Tundra I purchased recently, that will be delivered the day I get home from this rotation. Saw it on ebay, called them, researched them (Lexus dealership), had them do a close-up video walk-around via skype and I looked it over that way. Big Lexus dealership with excellent reviews and a non-pushy sales dude I felt comfortable with. First time I'll actually touch it in person will be in a week - so we'll see how it goes.

Nice! Glad the first one worked out. I hope time flies for you to get that Tundra!

Yeah. This is being held by eBay, not a dealership. But the transaction is running thru eBay. I have to get gift cards, take a pic of the receipt showing I loaded the cards, and email to eBay. Once they have that, they will ship car. If after 5 days I decide to keep it, they release funds to owner. If I don't want it, it ships back at her expense. Seems legit other than dealing with visa gift cards (which they physically do not receive) No signs of being a scam but stil a little nervous buying a car like this.

Got an update for y'all. Turns out this whole thing was a scam.

So I send my wife to go get the gift cards in anticipation of getting this deal done. But still had this strange feeling that paying via pictures of gift cards with EBay just didn't sound right. So I called EBay and had them check the case ID noted on the e-mail I received from EBay noting how to pay for the car. I was told it was not in their system; e-mail didn't come from them. They also asked if I had found the same car going directly thru EBay motors, and said I found it thru Craigslist but then I received an e-mail from EBay noting the payment process. They told me it sounds like a scam and to not send $$ (which I hadn't). EBay doesn't accepts gift card payments, PayPal in most instances.

So I e-mail the lady and told her EBay says it's not a real posting. That if the car is not listed on their website, then it's fake. So she then replies back and says she will post on EBay if it makes me feel more confident in the process. I said go ahead. She does and proceeds to send me a link to the posting. I click on it, and it takes me from one server to another. Not good. So I go into EBay's website directly and look for the car. Lo and behold, it's now on their website. But still not convinced. I checked the VIN on carfax.com and it comes back with the same model and description of the vehicle. Cool. I call EBay again to confirm the accuracy of the posting; they say it's legit. But my spidey senses kept telling me otherwise.

Still not comfortable with the process, I get to talking to some folks in the office about it, and they all agreed it was a scam; still sounds to good to be true. That I should send an e-mail to the seller directly from EBay and have the person confirm her name to ensure it's the same person selling the vehicle on craigslist. So I go about doing that. The name and e-mail of the seller was different than the person who communicated with me thru Craigslist. But, sent the e-mail anyway to see what happens. E-mail gets rejected; doesn't exist. So I send the person from craigslist an e-mail saying that the seller name in EBay doesn't match hers, so what's the deal? Till today, no reply. So it was truly a scam that I almost fell for.

The scary part about this whole process is how all of the e-mails about the car looked to legit. EBay logos and everything, you would never guess from the e-mails that they were fake. Even a real posting on EBay that was complete BS. I was so convinced this was legit, that I almost fell for it and would have lost $800. Good thing I checked every which way possible before sending my hard earned cash.

So please learn from my mistake (almost) and be careful what you buy out there. Triple check to ensure item and person is legit before you send cash. My next steps are to report in CL and EBay of the scam post.

If I read that I would have ran the first time. Way too many scams with GC involvement. Red flad right there. Unless it's some sort of local deal and you know the person - I would have ran.

    Glad it didn't get you!

Same here. Wife was riding my case saying it doesn't sound good. Told her I wouldn't send the $$ unless I was 100% convinced it was legit. Good thing I wasn't too blinded by the good deal and pulled the trigger. Would have had to go into hiding for a bit to hide the shame :anonymous:

Good. This one I was looking at originated in CL. Looks like they were trying to use EBay as a front to make it look more legit.
