I have been frustrated right from the start with my Tundra's factory navigation. On a trip to Maine last summer it took us 30 miles out of our way to our destination as one example. The straw that broke camel's back was when we were returning home from New Hampshire (the day after Halloween) after strong rain storms closed many roads due to flooding. I was in an area with no cell service and could not get the factory nav screen map to expand so that I could visually check alternate routes.
I wanted to use my wifi only tablet over a GPS unit with a small screen. After some online research I found the Garmin Glo2 which uses multiple cold war era Russian satellites as well the usual sat nav ones. Got it from Crutchfield for under $100. It runs off a rechargeable battery and easily pair to my iPad. It allows you to use any navigation app that you chose such as Waze or Google Maps etc.
I mounted my tablet via a RAM Mount Ram Track in the cubby just above the infotainment system. This method is very stable considering the weight of this rig. The size of the tablet beats a small gps screen hands down. In total I have about $220 invested. I'll update this thread after I get more time with this setup.

Op i dont know what nav you have on your phone but i use Google maps on my iphone x max and once your route gets loaded it can work in offline mode plus you can download any state to be used for offline .There is also many nav apps that work in offline mode like TomTom and Sygic. Most modern phones already have gps built it. In the last 6 years i used my 3 Tundra’s built in nav only couple of times.Phone nav is much more convenient and has all up to date maps with live traffic .

I completely agree. I wrote a thread on how to enable the offline mode as well:

My truck is primarily a mall crawler so I'm not too concerned about it moving overly much but my iPad is in a protective case which adds a bit of weight so we'll see if I need to go with a shorter arm.

So pardon my ignorance here, but its gonna shine through.

To use a wifi ipad for navigation you need a separate gps module?
I mounted my wifi ipad to the dash, downloaded Waze, and hooked up my phone as a hotspot. The tablet acted like it had almost no idea where I was, and turn by turn did not work at all. It was about as accurate as if you take your phone and turn off gps location and use cellular only.

I'm assuming a gps receiver like the OP used would take care of this?
Do the cellular versions of ipads/android tablets come with a gps chip inside?
