Hello new member here, i finally bought my dream truck after wanting one since their debut..
My question is anybody else having issues with the rock chip guard discoloring at the bottom of the cab. Dealer says its not a defect and basically live with it.
Ifeel like a brandnew $46,000 truck shouldnt look like this....

Looks like water got behind it. You can try a heat gun and that might fix it.

    Go to a different dealer.

I had to switch because I bought a new truck and things that were missing they told me I could buy.

Hoselton Toyota is a money grabber.

They are in East Rochester. Please avoid these people

This is actually crazy, I went to my dealer yesterday in Kenora Ontario, I have a 2019 Tacoma, Cavalry Blue. He tried to tell me it was the reflection from the ground. I told him to give his head a shake, and informed him that’s not how reflections work. He brought it into the shop and the body guy informed me that he has seen this issue twice so far and both were older gentlemen who didn’t really care. But he did say that it is definitely a warranty issue and gave me the email for the general manager. He said to make sure I save all emails about the issue. I’ll keep you posted with how things pan out. Might be a bit due to Christmas and what not

    @Justinbrown2991

I'll have to check mine when it's clean and dry, right now it's filthy in Winnipeg

The GM should be contacting you, now that the body guy confirmed it was defective and a warranty issue.

Hope it gets resolved soon for you

Brought my truck to 3 body shops. And only one of them says its a defect. The other 2 says its the way toyota has been putting out trucks and they all have this issue

Once mine gets a few chips and a few years on it, I would consider that option.

I definitely wouldn't put up with that. Dealers tell people BS like this because so many of them believe it and then they get away with. Do us all a favor and keep on them!

I took it to the body shops cause the dealer wanted professional opinions about the paint being deffective or not... even if it is visually confirmed by the dealer and body shop

Update! I took the truck to the dealer. They had me take it a body shop to check if its a deffect... the body shop confirmed it is indeed a visual deffect

So i am confirmed and approved for a repaint...
Though I am conflicted, do i break the factory seal and repaint or leave it and apply some sort of decal at the bottom of the door.
I have been advised by the body shop owner against repainting the truck, stating that i will never have a better paint job than factory even if its two tone or not
    What should i do guys?

Glad to hear you got a remedy. Don't think I like the idea of a repaint either though. If it starts to bug me I'll have to look at vinyl or something else to protect and mask the discoloration I guess. Curious to hear what you decide to do.

man thats a tuff one....if they repair it, paint wont be as durable as original probably...may screw something else up...

50/50 call as to what i would do....maybe some kind of wrap graphic along bottom? or diamond plate ?

If you opt not to have them paint it under warranty, they should apply that amount of $ to allow you yoir own remedy....diamond plate, decal, bed liner, etc.

My question is who is going to do the work, and how are they going to do the work?

The right shop will disassemble, painstakingly prep, then shoot the whole panels.

The wrong shop might half-ass the prep and try to blend.

Do you get to choose the shop? Is there a dollar limit?

I would find a shop that is notorious for high-dollar custom paint. Such a shop is capable of high end classic car restorations, and repairs to modern cars. Their work is meticulous and they are hardwired to do it right.

if you can find such a shop, do it. If you are limited to collision centers, consider sticking with the factory finish.

My paint guard is discolored slightly on the lower panel, but is unnoticeable when you step back 5ft or so. I would never have the truck repainted for this.
The one on the hood is not like this though and perfectly clear. I have wrapped a few bikes down tube with a roll of 3m clear vinyl and it also turns that hazy yellowed color. Must be a different material on the hood.

My friends Tacoma has much rougher paint than my Tundra FYI and they have told him it’s within normal. He has 50,000 miles now and could not care less at this point.

Unless I am mistaken, the OP isn't referring to 3M or any other vinyl. The discoloration is in the factory paint job. That is the case on mine for sure.

Ok, I thought he was referring to the clear vinyl “rock/chip guard” over the paint.

That is my understanding too. I believe the confusion is that the cause may be from water getting behind it and discoloring the paint

Nah, there's no rock guard over the paint. This is in the factory coating in the pic and on my truck as well.

He is in Alaska. I'm guessing his body shop choices will be limited.

I can see it more clearly now, it’s almost like you have a “less cavalry blue” stripe. I wouldn’t be happy about that, but not sure what I would do... I couldn’t discern the discoloration in the first pic.

Looks pretty bad for a new truck. I personally would not mess with the factory paint unless it’s Peeling in some way. A repaint will never be the same. Imo

Just to give an idea of what it would look like if you used bed liner. Not quite the right blue, but it conveys the point.
