I just purchased a used scangauge2 on eBay for 50 bucks. I got it mainly to read transmission oil temp to ease drain and fills.

    That's a good deal.

I went with the UG due to price but that was 10 years ago when they had the best rebate ever: $10 back on your card if you passed a short exam on the user's manual. I can't upgrade it to the MX (too old, will need to replace) but will do so eventually for the trans temps. It's definitely been a reliable unit.

I think the best selling point of the UG is the light sensor and auto dimming. When it's set up right it's both unobtrusive at night and more legible than than the factory screen in the daytime.

I want to watch my transmission temps closer, and favor the Ultragauge layout slightly. The Ultragauge displays six values instead of four, and the Ultragauge MX (and Blue, not EM) will provide transmission pan and post-TC temps. I believe I may have to reconfigure the pre-programmed PIDs according to their website (2017). The Ultragauge MX does not have some features of the EM...iirc the MX lacks the performance measurement feature (0-30, 0-60, etc.). Only place I've seen the MX (v1.4) for sale is on their website. Suggested retail price for the MX v1.4 is discounted 17% to $89.95.

    https://ultra-gauge.com/ZC/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=224

PIDs for Toyota Tundra/Tacoma are shown here on bottom of page 3 for 2015+:

The newer Ultragauges can do 4, 6, or 8 items per page, with 7 pages that can be populated and flipped through. Older models like mine are limited to 6 per page and 3 pages total.

Keeping it at 6 per page will keep the open/closed loop indicator in the corner. Not a huge deal as you can always tell when it's open loop on deceleration when the fuel rate goes to 0 and mpg to 999.9, much like when using a scangauge.

Okay, so Ultra Gauge is currently priced at $89.95 on their website and Scan Gauge II is $126.36 on Amazon (see screen shots below).

I only want to capture and read the Transmission Temperature for use in changing my trans fluid.

Is there a cheaper way to just get this information or is Ultra Gauge the cheapest and best way?

    Thanks!!

NOTE: I know about the paper clip thing on the ODB2 connector but want to see if there is another way

Well, the Ultra-Guage is clearly cheaper than the Scanguage. That $89.95 Ultra-Gauge MX is a discounted sale price (for Christmas?). I'm not sure how long it will last. There is a cheaper alternative in the Ultra-Gauge Blue Adapter ($79.95), but I'm not sure it would make sense for your intended purpose of ATF level setting to save $10.

This morning, I received the Ultra-Gauge Blue Adapter I ordered and just unpacked it. See pics below. My first impression of the Adapter was "Man, that thing is small." I chose the Ultra-Gauge Blue Adapter not because it was cheaper, but because it offered a wireless means of reading transmission temperatures using an iphone or Android phone.

You can download gauge pages for the typical parameters, but you will have to add and setup the Toyota transmission temperatures if you buy either the Ultra-Gauge MX or Ultra-Gauge Blue Adapter. You can build a gauge page from scratch if you like, and the presentation can be as attractive as Torque Pro (Android only), and as complicated as you choose. To use the Blue Adapter, you download the Ultra-Gauge Application from the App Store (Apple) or Googleplay (Android). You can download gauge pages that have most of the parameters you'll want to monitor, and you can add the transmission temps for monitoring using either the corded Ultra-Gauge MX or the Blue Adapter.

I've just begun to study how to setup the Blue Adapter and the Application, and it's complicated. I hope I haven't bitten off more than I can chew. That's why I wouldn't recommend the Blue Adapter for only the level setting function; the gauge layout is completely flexible, but it's too complicated for the results-oriented to set up. For only level setting, make it easy on yourself and buy the corded Ultra-Gauge MX. You'll still have to build in the transmission temperatures, but it is far simpler than the Blue Adapter with Application. For constant monitoring of engine parameters and transmission temperatures, the wireless option of using Blue Adapter and UG Application appeals to me.

I’m thinking about the UltraGauge max 1.4, how do you enter the transmission codes so you can read trans temp?

    John,

I looked on their website on this page: http://ultra-gauge.com/blue/obdii-manufacturer-gauges.php

And found these available codes (see screenshot) after I chose for Toyota.

I would be interested to know how you like the UG Blue and if it shows the Trans Temp to your liking.

FYI: I am using an iPhone / iPad

Please feel free to PM me if you like.

    Thanks,
    David

Is that red button an ON/OFF switch so you could leave it plugged into your ODB2 port without fear of it draining your battery?

No. It powers itself off after it senses the engine is no longer running.

The red button is pressed and held (>9secs) to initiate the bluetooth pairing with your phone, (Press ~5secs) instruct the adapter that you've just done a tank fill, (<1 sec) to wake up Adapter from "low power" mode. Waking the adapter is not required in normal operation...when you start the engine, the Adapter wakes up and connects to your phone automatically.

I've just managed to get the Adapter paired to my iphone, shut it down to confirm power down. Then restarted the engine, and the Adapter powered up and connected to my phone automatically.

I am not as familiar with the MX, but I believe their website said that the Toyota codes for the MGauges (manufacturer gauges outside standard OBD2) are the same as those used by ScanGauge, and are probably entered the same way, i.e. select off drop down menus and up/down buttons to enter code. The actual codes for transmission temperatures are given on bottom of Page 3 of this link. You'll have to get to the MGauge section first, then select and code from there. Note that Ultra-Gauges (MX and Blue) come pre-programmed for transmission temperatures, but if I understand correctly, for 2016+ you will need to modify the pre-programming:

    http://ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge/support/UG-MX1.4-Supplement.pdf

For those that have questions about either the Ultra-Gauge MX, or the Ultra-Gauge Blue Adapter, I recommend downloading the user manual of interest here:

Just got my scangauge 2 back from getting serviced. The back lit stopped working. They fixed and updated the firmware free. Also made in the USA!

I bought a Scangauge II in about 2006 and have used it to pull codes from several vehicles. I don't know if the firmware can be updated but I wonder if it thoroughly gets all the codes for newer vehicles. Anyone know the answer to this?

No. I haven't played with it for a long time, but I was never able to get Scangauge TPMS codes to work.

In case anyone is wondering if they work together with a splitter, seems to run without issue. Ye old ultragauge is starting to show its age in the middle of the screen.

Unfortunately the ultragauge warranty expired about 12 years ago. The new SGII has a lot better warranty. Its screen is fine; that's a reflection of my hand I think.
