If you ever have a Failure at any point in the 5-Year Warranty period, we will send you a replacement housing, so essentially you would get all-new Everything on the One side! :) No tricky Bulb Troubleshooting needed or anything! If you go past the Warranty period and run into a Failure, let me know and I'm sure I could set you up with a Solid deal on a Single Replacement!

These Tundra headlights are fairly interesting. I applaud The Retrofit Source/Morimioto for submitting samples of the lamps for partial FMVSS 108 compliance testing. The results are illuminating.

Most interesting is the intensity that the Morimoto xB LED headlamps put down at the test point 0.6D, 1.3R (also known as the hotspot). This point corresponds to the the right side of the road, ~75 meters away. The more intensity (in candea) at 0.6D, 1.3R, the better illuminated the right side of the road is at ~250 feet away. This is point "11" on the chart below:

Here are some numbers for the hotspot intensities for various headlamps. The first two lamps are from the 1970s. I've included a short description.

    · Hella 7” round H4 halogen: ~11,000 cd

    · 07 Altima halogen: 12,465 cd

    · Cibie 7” round H4 halogen: ~13,000 cd

    · 06 Chrysler 300C halogen: 16,292 cd

    · Morimoto Tundra xB LED: 19,535 cd (average of the two samples)

    · 07 Malibu halogen: 20,649 cd

    · 50th percentile model year 1997 American car with halogens: 22287.5 cd (12.8 volts)

    · 07 Escalade HID: 35,957 cd

    · ’19 RAM LED reflector: ~50,000 cd

    · ’19 Jeep Renegade LED projector: ~50,000 cd

It's very interesting to see the Morimoto projectors slot in just above a 2006 Chrysler 300C's halogen headlamps, and just below a 2007 Malibu's halogen headlamps. Note that all these halogen lamps were tested at 12.8 volts, and most cars' alternators put out >13.5 volts, so it's possible that in real-world operating conditions, the 300C's headlamp would actually come out ahead of the xB LED, since operating at 13.5 overs would give it possibly a ~1.2x increase in intensity.

What is also interesting is that the Morimoto xB LED lamps fall well behind a model year 1997 American car with 50th percentile headlamps. Researchers examined the 23 best-selling American cars for the model year 1997, which represented 45% of all vehicles sold for 1996. They examined every lamp and found the 25th, 50th, and 75th percentile intensities at various points. In other words, a fairy average car from 1996 with halogens would have beaten the Morimotos easily.

The lamps are made with Chimei Wonderlite polycarbonate. This plastic, with the chosen UV-protective coating system, is rated to withstand just 3 years of sun exposure in Florida and Arizona before developing noticeable haze.

Overall, I think the xB LEDs are a solid set of headlamps. The photometrics are better than a '06 Chrysler 300C, so Morimoto/TRS has that going for them.

My only wish for the next generation would be that Morimoto/TRS chooses a 5 year plastic, instead of a 3 year plastic. Greater durability would be nice for the price they're asking.

I am seriously considering buying one.

Is this ^^meant to be good or a dis? Because this all great and all that but I'm not driving a 06 Chrysler 300C. I would have preferred testing between gen 2 OEM lights and the Morimotos. It's the only relevant one to consider if the Morimotos outperform OEM. And if the plastic is a 2 year plastic wouldn't it be covered by the 5 year warranty?

The headlight plastic warranty on my 2010 was probably 2 years too. With a little EFFORT on my part, using a shot of spray sealant every so often, after ten years they still look like new.0408190457[2466].jpg

Dura Gloss 501 Spray Sealant is what I've using for years and I've found Car Guys products to be at least as good. Just about all the Detail Products offer Synthetic Sealants these days. There may not be much difference in them. I use CarGuys Sealant on paint, glass, wheels and clear plastics with great results.0411191259[2566].jpg

Is this even real? The OP has one post. Who is he and what is his reference. Where is the link to the study and, the insert has no names but only numbers. Unless the OP post's a source, this is junk imho. Moderators should take notice.

Yeah the leveling motor is what really sealed the deal for me. No other aftermarket housing seems to accommodate it.

while we talk specs, can you pull the Toyota stock halogens numbers so we can compare with the new Morimotos LED ? That's what people are interested in.

Yes. I’m in NC and package arrived at the Greensboro hub this am. Expecting delivery tomorrow. Also ordered the fogs and I received those yesterday.

The Tundra has a hotspot intensity of at least 15,000 candela, and that's with a -0.35 to -0.39 degree downward aim. All the other lamps in the list were tested with the proper aim dialed in.

I estimated the hotspot intensity by finding the peak intensity recorded on the right edge of the road by the photosensor, which was ~30,000 cd at a distance of 22.5 meters away from the photosensor. I'm estimating the contribution of each headlamp to be 50%, so 50% of 30,000 cd would be 15,000 cd per lamp.

I unfortunately don't have access to any better data than IIHS testing data, so 15,000 cd is a conservative estimate I based on the IIHS testing data.

With proper aim (had the IIHS adjusted their tested Tundra's lamps upward), hotspot intensity would likely have blown past 15,000 candela. Note that every single other lamp was tested with proper aim dialed in, so there were no losses from the headlamp pointing at the ground instead of the photosensor.

Compare this to the Morimoto average of 19,535 cd.

    ----

To give you a sense of how much a -0.35 to -0.39 degree downward aim destroys headlamp performance:

The Tundra's lamps are mounted at about 102cm high, according to the chart above.

Taking the hotspot to be a 0.6D, 1.3R (0.6 degrees below horizontal, 1.3 degrees right of vertical), a properly aimed Tundra's lamp would have its hotspot touching the road at 319 feet on the right side.

If we dial in a -0.35 degree downward aim, this hotspot now touches the road at 201.8 feet for a loss of 110+ feet of illumination distance.

The IIHS photosensors are at 0.8 feet off the ground, so it's not recording the light on the pavement. It's recording the light that makes it off the pavement--and the negative aim is sending a significant portion of the hotspot straight into the pavement. The true hotspot of the Tundra is likely >>15,000 cd, but it's not being recorded by the photosensors, since the true hotspot is on the asphalt instead of where the photosensor is at, thanks to sloppy aim.

    ----

While we're on the topic of "at least 15,000 candela for the Tundra headlamps" ... it's interesting to note that NAL (North American Lighting), who made the Tundra headlamps, said that back in 2004, 16,000 candela at 0.6D, 1.3R (hotspot) is the minimum for good performance.

The Tundra is doing pretty well, considering that it almost hits 16,000 cd with sub-optimal aiming.

In other words, 15 years ago, the benchmark was 16,000 cd.

Now, with OEM LED units, we're hitting over 50,000 cd.
