Recommend using Flex Fuel?

2016 Tundra SR5 Flex Fuel Engine.
seen some posts ware people want to stay away from flex fuel engine Why is that?
I don't use flex fuel and don't plan to. I have always used reg. fuel and premo every 3rd or 4th tank full on all my vehicals . what do you recommend?

 

My Sierra had it, I could really feel a HP boost with flex fuel. It does take away gas mileage but not as bad as people say. My injectors did gum up and I dont know the cause of it because E85 is supposed to burn cleaner. When gas was $4.00 E85 was like $2.75 and I saved a fortune in gas at the time. Thats all I got for you.

 

Had it on my chevy wasn't too fond of it. Besides cheaper the only thing I saw diff was the gas milage really sucked

 

It isn't really the engine itself but the electronic side of things. From what I've been reading, the computer/sensor on some trucks software are reading the fuel in their tanks as containing a higher percentage of ethanol than what is actually in the tank. This makes the computer run a different fuel map, a richer one. This makes the engine run very poorly. Some truck owners are finding resolution via a software update from Toyota dealers.

 

Wow, like the first person I've seen in my life that has a vehicle they care about and like running E85.....

Flex fuel doesn't play nice with supercharging without a lot of headache.

Over the years many repeated flashes and updates to avoid issues with the system reading alchohol when you are on normal gas resulting in rough starts and general feel of wimpiness.

 

I have a 2016 FFV 5.7L V8 4x4 crewmax. I feel the need to notify the public that my car was having really really bad rough starts in the morning - didn’t matter if weather was cold or warm - first start of the day always sounded like the engine was choking. I googled online and found this site and many other message boards about the Alcohol Density Calculation problems and the need to “reflash” the ECM (see Toyota Service Bulletin T-SB-0058-13).
I took the truck in to the dealer yesterday, they did a cold start this morning after it sat in the lot overnight, and concluded it had this problem that is specific to FFV Tundra engines.
The service advisor said that Toyota just came out with a new TSB a few days ago updating the old TSB so that it now covers the fuel pump and the “reflashing” of the ECM, it now also covers all FFV Tundras from 2009 - 2019. The new TSB is T-SB-0166-19.
So I hope this info helps, hit up your dealer if you are having enginestart-up problems with your FFVengine Tundras, and pass the word around!
If I had known about these engine issues, I would have NEVER bought a FFV engine!!!
This TSB engine fix is only good if you’re under 96 months or 80,000 miles!!!

 

Dont worry about anything related to Flex fuel engines. If you are not running E85 and just running 87 to 93 octane gas you should not have any issues. FFV engines have a different tune in them when the sensor in the gas tank senses E85. The fuel injectors are larger to push 25% more fuel in due to the E85. Also the fuel pump is larger in the tank and is a 2 speed pump to deal with the additional fuel requirements with E85. Other than that the engines are pretty much the same.

And yes there is a issue with fuel density reading in the ECU over time you may need to have it reset

 

Is the tsb only if you’re having issues or should it just be done regardless?

 

I'd like to know this as well.
