closed loop. Strap flies off the hitch ball and it's pretty dangerous.

Even worse than that strap coming off the ball, the ball can break loose. This is a video I found of someone testing this - they were pulling really fast but it does show the ball snapping off (just skip to the 4:29 mark):

Whatever you choice,You can't get it too strong! Passed experience tells me when you can't pull it easy then it seems everyone backs up to get some "slack"and then hit it wide open! Also a good idea to get a heavy blanket to let at on the chain, strap or whatever you are using.BACK WINDOWS AND TAILLIGHTS ARE EXPENSIVE!!!

I have a 10 ft strap that was used to pull bull dozers out. I'm not too worried about breaking it!

Remember, if you don’t have a blanket, a jacket will work or anything else you can drape over the line to absorb the stored energy causing it to fall downwards to the ground rather than flying like a sling shot to the left or right or whatever direction.

That was my setup for a while. I was a little worried about the end of the hitch chafing the strap if I had to pull or be pulled off to the side at all. I watched a video where a guy was saying I go off road x amounts of times and I'm an expert and you don't need those d ring receiver mounts. Oh well I got mine for under $30 and used a grade 8 bolt to attach it so I'm no longer worried about chafing the strap at any reasonable angle. I also tightened the shackle with an adjustable wrench so it's on there unless you use tools which I always have within feet of the shackle anyway.

I doubt a hitch pin would fail, but a solid sleeve pulling on a pin is still stronger than a somewhat flexible strap.

It's a really good idea to "seize" or "mouse" the pin. Basically, a wire or zip tie through the hole on the pin and around the shackle to keep the pin from from inadvertently spinning out if you plan to leave the shackle attached.

I found the equivalent to bubba rope with a soft shackle that was locally made at a 4*4 shop for about a third of the price. Forget what it was called, cannot really comment on it’s effectiveness yet :fingerscrossed:

PLEASE! if you use the ball for a recovery mount, please loop around your hitch pin instead for the occasional recovery. Using the ball is extremely dangerous as previously stated.

Do some research and have the safe equipment and knowledge to use it if you plan to “help” anyone including yourself.

Been pullin with the ball for 40 years, never saw a problem. Not an everyday thing, or pulling bigass heavy trucks, but pullin people outta snow or little muddy situations- BUT - I like the shackle hitch and will get one of those and save the ball for trailers.

I haven't seen the video but @csuviper said there's one where not 1 but 2 people are killed by a ball breaking loose while pulling. Risks VS Rewards. I'll never use the ball again.

I'm eyeballing a Smittybilt recovery hitch. Seems well made.
