Planning a family vacation next month in Colorado so I went online yesterday to TireChain.com and scored some heavy duty (7mm) tire chains with V bars. Also scored some tensioners and storage bag for around $150 shipped. I did zero research so i probably got robbed. What do yall think?

Lived in CO for almost 9 years. Haven't needed them, yet. If you're going deep into the mountains then maybe...depending on the weather and any recent storms.

I have only used chains a couple times in CO.

    -Blizzard of 07
-Stuck cutting firewood in 06, muddy as hell.

    Enjoy the trip.

At the moment there is no snow in Summit County........ You will most likely not use them but it never hurts to be prepared.

Not sure about the price but you won't need them, unless you got one of those Southern Edition 4x2 Pros. Would've been better off spending your $150 on a Breck lift ticket.

I just got my Tundra a couple weeks ago, going to size a set of 7mm V-bar chains equipped with cam tensioners once I get the new duratracs on this week. I used my chains a minimum of 5 times a year on the Tacoma with duratracs, late season hunting in the mountains, etc. Never used them on a maintained road, but carried them all winter anyway. $150 doesn't sound too bad for that setup.

Always thought about getting them but have never needed them thus far. Even in the mountains during a snow storm. Just drive slow. If it's that bad on the roads, it will be the lack of others that keep you from driving.

Been here in CO since 9/2004 (minus 9 months in AK) and haven't ever had to use chains although there were times where chains could have helped.

tire chains arrived yesterday. The heavy-duty ones, (7 millimeter) are definitely heavy duty. Not sure there would be enough room left between the change in the fenders if I was running oversized tires. The only negative I see is that it says "made in China" stamped all over. We'll do a test fit and final adjustment this weekend. And nobody better leak it to my wife that I didn't need these! Since when is this forum about stuff you need rather than stuff you want?

You can live inside the arctic circle and never need chains. Depends where you go and when. I have had to chain up regularly to climb some mountain grades on the interstate here in AZ. Lots of times they have check points and will limit access unless chained or have 4x4.
I had 2 sets and occasionally chained up all4 wheels on my lifted 1st gen taco to safely go on off road trails in several ft of snow. In conditions like that you can't really identify a log or low stump. For a few of my trucks I had 2 full sets of wheels and tires. I would put the studded mud n snows on in the fall and take em off in the spring. Chains are a good purchase for peace of mind. Unfortunately I don't think that there is enough clearance from the upper control arm on the tundra to run chains on the front.

Have you looked into this any further, gosolo? Do any of our other members have any information Re: chains on Tundras?

I want to have a set before next winter and would prefer to have a full set of 4.

I have fit a set for the front and with these stock Michelin tires the chains clear the UCA by about 1/2". Are you running stock rims and tires? I have modified chains dozens of times to fine tune the fit. Whatever you get, test check it in your garage with the truck wheels jacked up and good light not out on the road in the dark with a ft of snow!

Are you running aftermarket wheels with higher offset? With my stock 18" wheels, I don't have room up front for anything more than light duty chains of cables. I'm fairly certain the pair of heavy duty v-bars with cam tensioners I sized for the rear will suffice. Running Duratracs too, don't usually put the jewelry on unless it's a steep icy hill or over 15" of snow.

Stock pro rims (which I like) and stock Michelin tires (which I don't like).
I'm in complete agreement with you, only use the rear set unless you're in trouble (or about to be).
Mine are also heavy duty with the V track welded to the cross chains

As long as the Tundra can keep up to what my Tacoma did in snow, I'll be happy. Those were only twist-link chains on the taco, not v-bars.

I haven't run the chains on the tundra yet, but they are sized and ready.

    Appreciate the info!

I'm running TOYO AT2 275/70 R18 on stock TRD rims. So one size up from factory, I believe. Not sure how that would effect chain fit on the trucks...

I hear you on the test fitting and trial runs! Nothing worse than nasty surprises in the backcountry and I do all I can to avoid them.

I’ve run my chains a couple times in steep icy terrain when cutting some firewood for a buddy back in November. Nigh unstoppable...
