First post here. just got a 2005 TRD Access cab v8 with 89,000 miles. sold my 03 4runner.

anyway, id like to wire a usb outlet into my cig lighter. one like this.
    https://www.amazon.com/Charger-Waterproof-Cigarette-Voltmeter-Motorcycle/dp/B07DGNQNLR

i have done this on other cars, but most only have 2 wires going to the socket. when i removed this one, it has 2 connectors with 4 wires total.

first question, which 2 wires am i to use for the USB outlet
second question, i checked the fuse diagram and it appears 32 is the fuse for the cig lighter and other items, do i need to add an in line fuse for extra precaution? i recently completed this on my 04 wrangler, and it had its own separate fuse on the panel just for the cig lighter. some pictures attached.

the smaller connector was going to a light on the socket? has white with green and solid green wires

the larger connector was going directly into the back of the lighter, with solid white and solid gray(maybe black?) wires

I tried to change that bulb on the cig lighter and gave up. Figured I would have to mangle the entire assy just for a light bulb conversion to LED so I gave up on it.

How did you get the thing out of there?

I have no answers for you on the electrical side.

If you do indeed get the one you linked to, the description suggests/comments about a few things and personally will not dispute what they are recommending. OR you could tap into the gray with the wire they supply with 10amp fuse....double protection.

so just leave the other connector alone (with the green wires), gray to positive with in line fuse, white to ground, and good to go.

thanks much! and you asked how i removed it? did you see the area around the socket......

    :rofl::rofl::rofl:

That is something I would have done. I tried to replace the bulb in the ash tray and completely destroyed it.

Because of that video @DennisCastro put up, I now think I have the missing clue to install a new LED bulb for the cig ring. That bulb change dogged me last year to the point of having to let it go. Nobody here had any idea, but it looks like its a counter-clockwise simple twist!

That area is so tight working from the ashtray and I did not want to remove the lighter so going to give it a revisit today!

People replacing the cigarette lighter with a permanent USB port has me scratching my head as to why one would do that (and lose access to a universal 12V power source) when you can use on of the plugs above? They are unobtrusive and work great. Is there a functional reason I'm missing (quite possible) or is it just for aesthetic reasons?

I'm using one of these for functional reasons until I get my new head unit in (GA is a phone hands free state). It works great and has two USB ports. The cigarette lighter receptacle is the best place for it because the 12V sockets near the passengers feet would not be a great placement for the microphone.

This one can be used in the cigarette lighter port? I've never even looked behind the pop out lighter.

That's amazing. I didn't know something like this existed. I want it purely for the USB charging ports but it would be great for someone needing Bluetooth capability.

In my experience with FM transmitters they can either work very well or don't. The key factor in both is how crowded the FM spectrum is wherever you happen to be driving.

This is true...I live in an urban environment and I had to try a few different ones before I got one that worked well...then that signal got a station and I had to change it again, but no issues finding a new signal that worked great.

I have this exact thing and it works great. The lights aren't really bright but it was cheap and easy.

Yes, I installed the same one and just left the other connector. The power wire will do the trick for charging and illuminating your battery voltage. I also broke the black bezel getting that thing off and had to glue it back together!!! Guess I should have been a little more patient getting that thing out!

for my truck, the cig lighter wasnt working, so i was having to replace it anyway. And, for a truck that family and friends will borrow, i like always knowing i have 2 hardwired usb ports. i have numerous chargers like the one above, but they always go missing. i have installed the hardwired ones in numerous cars and prefer them, if install isnt a huge pain or the outlet isnt working.

i have this same device in my 2004 TJ, and it works great. ill probably buy another for the tundra. In my Tundra, i have 3 12v ports in the front, 2 below the hvac, and 1 for the cig lighter, so losing the cig lighter still leaves me 2. i would not have done this if I only had 1 total.

I discovered black trim bezel was broken this past year. Evidently, it was broken back in 2003 when the XM installers tapped into this region. They used sneaky black putty to fix it. I guess even the pros have a hard time with this piece.

Out of curiosity do the AC trucks have the rear power outlet too? There's one on the lower right hand side of the console in the back seat on the DC.

That was where I ended up plugging in my Sirius tuner to leave the front 3 open.

I hard wired for aesthetics and there are also two 12-volt outlets on the passenger side.

finally finished it up a week or 2 ago. final product looks awesome, and i did straighten the outlet out so its level. if i had to do this again, i would not. im happy how it turned out, but when you cut the 2 wires to hook into the back of outlet, there is no slack and it was a huge pain to entend them.
