I had both my Boxers professionally trained (2 week board) with "ECollar" brand collars. It was seriously a fkin miracle, they are the best trained dogs anyone has ever seen now. I walk both of them, off leash, down the street in a "double heel" daily. If you can swing it, try to get some professional help at first... there is as much learning on the human side as there is the dogs.

This would have been truly impossible without ecollars.

I use the Garmin Delta with bark limiter. Works great and I use for off leash. After a couple of small corrections I just use the tone or the vibration mode. I don't think I have shocked my dog once in the past 3 years. He is super stubborn and has never gone past level 2 (there are 16 levels). Worth every single penny.

But like others said you want to use it to get the dogs attention not hurt them. So the annoyance goes away when they stop the bad behavior. Good luck!

I've used e-collars to train a few hunting dogs.

You can certainly traumatize a dog with one if you're callous and cruel, but I wouldn't worry about injuring the dog with one so long as you don't use the e-collar strap like a normal collar. Never put a leash on the e-collar strap. Tugging on it makes the metal prongs dig into the dog's neck and causes a pretty painful abrasion.

Dogs are much smarter than people give them credit for. If you don't know what you're doing they learn pretty quickly that the shock comes from the collar. Then they totally break the rules and ignore you when they aren't wearing it.

You end up with a Jekyll & Hyde dog. Acts like an angel with the e-collar on and a demon without it. My first dog trained with an e-collar even figured out how long the battery lasted when the collar got old. He behaved beautifully until the battery ran out, then it seemed like he would tease me the rest of the day like, "I do what I want and you can't stop me" .

Don't get me started. Garmin bought tri-tronics and ruined their entire product line in less than 2 years.

    Tritronics loyalist here, too.

My EXPs are still going strong and holding a charge 12 years on, though.

My Dogtra is 16 but has had a battery change. The electronics are much bigger than today's collars - got Dogtra for the continuous variable stim vs the stepped stim on the tritronics. Where I to buy one today it would be the Einstein.

I've got an 8 year old Upland G3. I bought it just after Garmin bought Tritronics, but before they started messing things up.

The collar battery is running flat now so I'm going to see if Batteries Plus Bulbs can build me a new one rather than buy a new collar.

If that doesn't work I'm considering a Dogtra to replace it with.

That’s a good idea! I have 2 collars, 2 dummy collars, and a sport g3 handset that I *really* don’t want to replace. Please let me know how your B+B trip goes. Good luck!

I hear ya. I had a second EXP collar that I let a buddy use on his young dog a few years ago. He didn't buckle it well enough and lost it in the field.

I already knew that it couldn't be replaced. I almost lost a friend that day. (Just kidding, mostly.)

Over the past couple of years Garmin has tried to bring back the tritonics quality and functionality into their product lines. I have been more than happy with mine and my dog beats the hell out of it. Don’t give up on them yet. They are trying. But I agree with you I super disappointed when they first bout tritonics. You couldn’t kill those things.

I have a Dogtra and it is still chugging along after 16 years with a couple of battery replacements but the main complaint I have heard there (and experienced) is stim inconsistency - may want to check out that before you jump ship. These issues were reported by working dog people who know how to properly fit the collar.

I know a lot of the working dog people (Schutzhund, Ring, LE) really like the Einsteins. It is what I would get if I were replacing mine but since my collar use is for troublesooting and not routine wear, I am not planning on dropping more money. Plus the dogs work with an Astro and two collars at time is not my cup of tea, nor is laying out the big bucks for an Alpha.

I don't know if their quality has dropped since Garmin bought them, but useability has definitely suffered especially in the Sport series controllers.

You could use the Tritronics controller (adjust stim levels, switch dogs, etc.) quickly without looking at it even with thick gloves on. The last thing you should do is take your eyes off of the dog when you're training. It's an enormous flaw in any training aide if you have to focus your vision and attention away from the dog in order to use it.

Example: Garmin replaced the sport model stim level thumb adjustment wheel (detents for each level) with digital up/down buttons. It's like they took a dump on the tried and tested Tritronics designs to try and force people to buy their more expensive gps models.

@grannynancy what's the range on the Einstein collars? I think my Tritronics is good for a 1/2 mile and both controller and collar are water proof. When it was new the collar battery would last 2 full days on a single charger.

The link I posted has a one mile range model. Yes, waterproof. I have not worked with one but they seem well built and liked. You can see them on the link and ask about them on the hunting dog forums. I know one mile may get 1/2 mile given experience with radios..

The people I know are using them at much closer range and the SAR folks typically use the alpha if anything becaus of the combo dog tracking and ecollar.

I agree the tritonics ease of use is far superior. That’s why I upgraded to this
    https://www.cabelas.com/product/Gar...VB3iGCh1XhArREAQYAyABEgIf7_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

But they also have a higher end pro series that replicates the tritonics. I haven’t heard of Einstein collars before. I will definitely check them out. Any other gear advice I am open to suggestions.

No luck at Batteries Plus Bulbs. They said the battery is sealed in the case so they can't replace it.

Are you sure you can't send the collar in and have Garmin replace it? That is what I have done with my Dogtra and they also adjusted everything for free when they did. But as much as I like Garmin (this is a tritronics, right?) they have sucky customer service sometimes.

Batteries plus could not help me with my Dogtra.

It was K9 Off-Leash Hampton Roads - but I forget my actual trainers name. The business side of things was Josh, but I know my dogs slept elsewhere and were mostly handled by another trainer. Its the guy in the video... I just don't recall his name.

Both my wife and I are in agreement - we will never own another dog without professional training.

You interested in K9 Offleash? Or have used them?

Its some crazy stuff. I've walked the two of them every day since the training, around my neighborhood, the beach, etc... not once have either been on a leash. Almost 3 years, and at least 1000 leash-less walks with no incident.

I purchased this bark collar Dogtra YS600 No-Bark Collar as I have a 2 YO Retriever who swears he needs to bark at EVERYTHING he sees. I like how I can chose which setting for intensity and that it offers a warning once it detects the bark motion. Collar is large enough to fit even the biggest breed. Mine is about 70#'s but will also fit my 100# Staffie who is short and stout.

We tried a Citronella bark collar with our Belgian Mal. She would get a spritz of it when she barked, and hated it. The problem that we had is we have two dogs. So poor Jade got spritzed when Sadie barked!o_O

Used shock collars on the pointer, the Great Dane, and my boxer. Used them to snake train, stop rolling in horse manure, and to stop running off. Worked great. Very rarely ever needed to go past 2-3 on the power settings (went up to 9). Get the ones that have a tone button so you can tone them before you hit them. Trains them to listen for the tone. After a little bit, you won’t hardly ever use the shock, just the tone.

And to Mr. Bee’s point, I’d love to put a shock collar on kids. Make it easier to train them to.

Should've got a cat? Dogs bark, that being said they also bark for tons of different reasons. It very well could be that your dog just needs good exercise, mental and physically. Get out and experiencing the world so everything isn't foreign and perceived as a threat is good too. Properly socializing the dog to the world will help tremendously. I don't know the breed you're dealing with but some dogs can be tougher to handle in all aspects than others.
That being said I'd be careful doing any training with an E-collar until you've read up on how to do it. IMO jumping to a collar just for barking before trying other avenues is wrong. You can really screw up a dog using one not knowing what you're doing. There are a few good trainers that use them responsibly. Look up Robert Cabral on YouTube there is some good info on there and you may see what I'm talking about. In the end, dogs bark and you don't want you're dog to be afraid to bark at all times in fear of getting shocked. A lot of times they bark in alert of a could be threat long before we know of it.

    Just my 2 cents.
