Since the underneath work was done (for now) I picked up a bigger air compressor and went to town with woolwax undercoating lanolin grease. Hopefully that'll keep the salt damage at bay although I only used about a quart of goop and others mention using more than a gallon! Maybe I've got time yet for a second coat before true winter here.

Title came and she's registered to me now! Then tonight I threw a full set of bolts in the fog light pockets that I noticed were loose. Finished off the quick work with rotopax, shovel, and hi lift jack mounting on the bed rack. All that's left is treds and water jerry mounts on the second swingarm and its adventure ready. Oh yeah the tent...hope to fix that soon too. Also check out my for sale list as I pawn off the parts that aren't being saved.

Threw the durobumps on real quick. Very easy install. I did have to jack it up a bit to fit a deep well socket and ratchet in there, big whoop, quit complaining guys! I chose not to leave the spacers on rear of LCA bumps that are supposedly needed for the 700lb coils to prevent coil bind BUT we'll watch and feel bump engagement and see if they're needed. There are still spacers on the front of LCA factory bumps to play with add or removal too.

Also, I don't know how people think RTT setup and pack down is fast. I guess I got used to just crawling in the back of the 4runner as "setup". Only broke one strap, dropped a bunch of plastic end caps out of the ladder, and poked the cover 4th side rail/rope out through its sleeve once. Hopefully I get much better at deployment.

Been a while since an update. We camped in it at 26 degrees F. It was cold and too much condensation froze on the inside of the tent, not enough oxygen to run the buddy heater. Better sleeping bags and windows cracked for ventilation for oxygen and condensation control, lesson learned.

Christmas brought the truck some more winch rigging gear, lights to mount under for puddle/courtesy/rock lights, and a trasharoo! I swapped the tire to the left swingout for better passenger side visibility which I got used to in the 4runner having the fridge blocking the drivers side rear view. Much better. Threw on the trasharoo while I was at it which looks awkwardly new and square still...

    20200118_182048.jpg

I've also been eyeing a soft topper, missed the fas-top Christmas deal. Tan or black canvas on the white truck?

Winter camping shake down run. I LOVE the rear awning over the tailgate but it won't stay, going to a simple EZ up instead. The RTT was warm enough with the annex room and 0 degree sleeping bags with liners, but it's still a pain to pack up and dry out and doesn't fit in the garage and heavy up high and ugly and.... I pulled it off and I don't think it's going back on. Ordered a Gazelle T4. The bed rack might be coming off next.
    20200124_175703.jpg 20200124_175624.jpg

Also found that my headliner was a bit damp on Sunday morning near the driver side a pillar, ruh roh. Got home and pulled the rack off to find no sealant on the bolts, zero. Well that makes sense. I know the PO had some challenges installing the rack in the first place so no biggie, a chance to clean and reseal the roof paint and seal the mounting holes to prevent this again in the future.

On my way home from a Tennessee trip I found a cheap OEM trailer hitch to remount the rear bumper properly. I found a couple other missing "patch" brackets and a bunch of missing bolts to order through Roman so this should make the rear bumper MUCH more solid and regain towing/hitch hauling ability. While I'm under the rear I may pull the other light leaf from the spring pack to soften the rear up a bit, concrete slab highway gets that booty bouncing!

I put a shit ton of silicone on all my bolts and attachment points when I put my prinsu on and I still constantly rub and check my headliner to see if its damp haha. That sucks man, but that truck is sick nasty

Thanks! Same on my 4runner prinsu and it never leaked. She's sealed up now. Hopefully I'll get to test it this weekend.

Friday I pulled the rear bumper off to install the OEM hitch. The bolts I got for the "patch brackets" were only half right so I stole some from the 2nd gen temporarily.

Installing the rear bumper by myself was exciting but very happy with it now, tweaked to my liking.
    20200131_204705.jpg

ended up pulling a leaf out of the spring pack saturday and pulled the wrong one! I accidentally set it to option 1 and it was nose high and rode like doodoo. That was quite the learning curve for me coming from an all coil spring rig. I hadn't touched a leaf spring since adding a leaf to my brothers f150 10 years ago. Took me most of Saturday night and finished up Sunday, making my own shims that were missing between a couple leaves. Squat booty. Not the good kind.

    20200202_105043.jpg

Anyway I went ahead and fixed it tonight, second time around only took under 3 hrs to get it set to option 2 and even the front out for drivers side lean. Sits perfect and just barely scrapes the roof rack going out of the garage, adding a little more passenger side weight should help.
    IMG_20200204_215542_257.jpg

Next up I'm awaiting some extended rear brake lines from toytec and brake line and abs wire brackets cause they are the limiting factor for full droop now.

Rear Toytec +2" brake lines installed last night with the ARB brake line and ABS wire offset brackets. Struggled with mighty vac solo bleeding due to air leakage around the bleeder valves, read about using teflon tape or dab of grease but gave up. Will have the wife do the tried and true two person pedal pumping to get it right! I still need to droop it out to make sure that it's long enough but the amount of extra line hanging there is very promising. Tweaked the alignment to pull out some of the toe in I got from fixing driver side lean and called it a night.

    20200206_203327.jpg

Next up is working on getting the dirtbike hitch hauler to work with spare mounted on the swingout and some DIY bed rail mounts to get the hi lift, treds, and shovel mounted down in the bed sides so that I can pull and sell the bed rack since I'm over the RTT life. Gazelle T4 showed up this week and it's awesome! Anyone looking for a barely used Datin DC bed rack with an uncoated bedside accessory plate? Looking into soft topper options now for quick transition between open bed and covered/relatively weather tight.

Took way too long to wire up rock lights to the cargo light switch so they can be set to "door" as courtesy lights or turned on at anytime. I took the hard route and fished the wires through the rockers for a very clean job. I used a cell phone endoscope and it worked awesome!

Also since we were stuck at home we camped anyway. The T4 sets up so fast and is massive! This sparked some energy for organizing the camp totes and recreating the checklist that we had for the 4funner. So the wife went to town on some labels as well with some leftover camo vinyl from my adventure scoot.

They're plano sportsman trunks. 1619 and 1919 I think. They're okay for the price but not front runner cases or anything super sturdy like that. They work well so far with a cargo net thrown over top in the bed.

I am about to install a bumper winch combo myself and was wondering about this yesterday. Are you running the 16" coils on stock LCAs or a long travel setup? I am current running Icon 2.5"s on the front but I know that they are 600 or something similar. Do you happen to have a link to the coils that you got and any advice on anything else you did to help with the added weight? Thanks in advance!

Yep 16" 700# eibachs on icon 2.5 with stock LCA to hold up the winch and bumper. No link since they came with the truck but I'm assuming any place with good suspension parts support would sell them, wheelers, kartech, poly, sdhq etc. The only other front suspension change I did was duro bumps but haven't really tested them yet so I'll hold opinions for now. The stock bumps were just short and firm, probably very harsh I would assume.

Stretching canvas in the cold sneak peak. I'll give more of a review of this somewhat newer product to the market after some use but first impressions are pretty good!

Fas-top canvas bed canopy review so far. Limited miles, no rain experience, I have no affiliation with Fas-top and was not asked to provide any feedback, just sharing my experience with a lesser known brand.

I had a few questions up front about sizing and clamp style and they were able to answer my questions quickly and effectively, and also to my liking for me to order that same day. Ordering was simple online, shipping cost was reasonable, shipping lead time their website says 5-7 days but it was more like 10-14, they could be a little more transparent about lead time but still not long for a made to order product. The cover arrived well packaged and complete. There were no instructions provided but almost self explanatory. The only real instruction needed was "make sure the ends of the bed rails with the snaps on them are at the back!" and "don't be afraid to REALLY pull hard on the cinch straps" The rest of the pieces can only go one way to mate up the canvas cab and tailgate ends to the rails properly. Oh well, we do's it nice cause we do's it twice!

    Pros:
    • The rails are a strong single piece extruded aluminum profile, no snap together rails here
    • The canopy is already attached to the folding bars, making install only possible one way
    • Strong velcro all down the side rails, I strongly dislike the snaps of other brands
    • Tight fitting, maybe a bit too tight at first but installing in a cold garage doesn't help
    • It's clear they're in the canvas business, nice quality materials, strong seams, decent windows
    • Optional clamps for Toyota bed track system mounting
    • Easy to clamp front and rear panels with large zippers
    • Cool storage pouch on the front of the bed to hold the entire assembly together when folded down at no extra charge
    • Easy to throw on/off in minutes
    • All of the attachment points are on a t slot in the provided track and can be adjusted easily and almost infinitely for the perfect fit
    • Optional other items could be added to the Fas-top t slot if desired
    • Flap over the tailgate end does not rub the paint but is long enough that it should keep water for sure stationary and okay in motion

    Cons:
    • The threaded "tnuts" provided for Toyota bed track system were not tall enough and would pull through the slot, I used some stainless steel t-nuts off of Amazon instead
    • While the bed rails are strong in bending the ends are pulled up on the outside edge by the cinch straps and the centers are pushed down on the inside edge by the lever action of the the support mechanism so they end up with a noticeable twist, 4 clamps provided clearly need to go on the very ends of the bed rails to keep them clamped down but it would be nice to have 2 more to support the centers. This may be a non-issue if I would have removed by bed tracks and used the c shaped clamp style. They are sending me a couple of extra clamps to try.
    • Some seams pulled tight show light through - Not really a con, just a fact of any sewn soft top, seam sealed them and hope that helps keep it more water tight
    • Rear window has a nice strap to hold it up when rolled up, but when not rolled up that strap just flops around in view, should be easily solveable
    • Flap over front of bed catches wind while in motion and taps the cab, will need to velcro or magnet this down somehow, again easy to resolve and a personal preference
Overall so far I would purchase again as well as recommend to others. I would possibly even consider the travel system with both the canopy and the flat tonneau cover for my other Tundra. For this truck I didn't want the gap of a rolled up cover between the canopy and the cab and will run the canopy most of the time. I'll update with any more findings that would change my mind along the way. Onto the pictures...

Almost forgot to talk about the custom bed track brackets for the hi lift and shovel. I wanted these items to sit down lower for better CG and to better utilize the wasted bed side space while still allowing the canopy to flip up and down. They are made of painted steel bar stock bent by hand and attached on stainless steel t-nuts to the OEM tracks. The hi lift fits perfect in the bedside pocket of a DoubleCab! I opted to throw in some rubber garden hose washers on the mounting bolts to help dampen vibrations and some furniture pads on the bottom to protect the bedliner. The shovel mount has a few extra holes drilled so I could change it out for different stuff or add to it later but for now just a pair of quickfists.

Finally got out on a real camping and wheeling trip in this truck. We tested out the T4 tent in the rain and it did awesome. The fas-top not so much, leaked like a seive. I'll be adjusting it again and applying a thicker coat of seam sealer. Few other tire to fender liner rub areas to address and will wrap the rear resi lines to protect against wearing through. The truck did amazing offroad, much different feel than the 4runner but very capable and fit everywhere the jeeps and land cruisers fit!

Love the T4 tent, so much room and can stand up in it! It worked out great for the base camp setup, we went to Red River Gorges area eastern KY. My weekend plans just got cancelled so maybe we'll go camping again too.

Ended up going with durobumps for the rear to match the front even though I liked some of the wheelers design features better. Durobumps are not designed to be shimmed taller to limit uptravel if needed and their mounting design requires ubolt removal for changing or adjusting bump stop height with home made shims. At the moment they are only offering a 3.5" tall version, where as Tacoma applications have 4.5" and 5.5" height available. I know that they are softer than the stock bumps but they are quite a bit taller so I'm going to try them as is and see if it alleviates my rear wheel fender rub issue, I don't think I need much more limit in slow speed stuff to keep the tire off the fender liner clips. If not I'll be designing an adjustable height mount for them.

Threw in the rear durobumps. The base plates seemed to be a little shorter than the stock ones so the ubolts were tilted in towards each other but once the bolts were torqued it pulled them flat. Tight fit is good I suppose. Can't wait to flex it out again to see if this lessens my rear rub issues and of course to try some bottom outs to feel a soft bottom.

I also threw in my old weboost drive sleek cell booster before realizing that the roof rack doesn't have any good magnetic parts for the antenna! Quickly made a little steel tab to rivet on since I'm not a fan of magnetic mounts on paint.

Next up, how far do I dare extend a dirtbike hitch hauler? Or give up on this dream?

Got bored waiting for some more OEM pinion preload shims for my regear project so I finally tackled a project that's been sitting on my workbench for a couple months now. I got a two source battery cutoff switch to wire my winch into so that I can isolate it when not in use. The 4 position switch also leaves me the option to run the winch off a second battery OR couple both batteries together to run the winch or jump start each other if i ever go to a dual battery setup. I cut a simple steel plate, tacked welded it to the stock battery tie down, and threw together a massive 1/0 lead with some leftover parts I had from my last rigs dual battery setup. Always fun to make stuff with spare parts you had laying around for $0!
