Hey guys, I'm back! Hope everyone is well. I'm looking at grabbing some new wheels but want to make sure I minimize my rub. I have a 2006 with ICON 2.5s on the front and am running Cooper STT Pro 285/70/17s on 2016 4Runner wheels that are 7x17 with an offset of +15mm which gives me about 4.1" of backspacing. With this I have pretty bad rub on my frame, and I can't get full turn. I'm looking at some 9x17s with -12mm offset which makes my backspacing about 4" and am wondering if the 9" wide instead of 7" will make enough of a difference.

I believe @Rheywood456 runs almost the same setup as mine the only difference being he has 9" wheels. Does anyone else have 285s and if so what are your wheel specs? Thanks!

I have the OEM Sponge Bob ‘Patrick Edition’ Wheels on 285/75/r16. Michelin Defender E-rated.

Slight inside rub on frame under footwell area at full wheel turn going forward. Never backwards. Been on this size for 17 years and frame just has paint rubbed look at contact point.

I know the 16” aren’t cool. I know the 4 Runner wheels are cool, but they seem to cause tire issues on our trucks on 17”. I’ve said it before that the 285/75/r16 is the sweet spot tire size on our vehicles.

I keep these archive pics from this site as a reference to help others.

Thanks! I don't have a problem with 16" and honestly only got the 4Runner wheels because they were a great deal. :rofl:I already have 17" otherwise I'd try 16".

My wheels are -12mm offset with 4.5” backspacing. I rub just slightly at full lock on the frame. I am also running 295/70/17s.

run some spacers or get some better offset wheels and you’ll have close to no rubbage!

Are those 9" wide wheels? I've thought about throwing 1.25" SpiderTrax on but it seems like that would push it out far enough to hit the pinch weld area at almost full turn. Does that make sense?

    Yes. 17x9.

Shouldn’t have too much of an issue with the pinch weld with 285/70/17s. But you can always make small cuts and then smash the pinch weld with a larger hammer to gain additional clearance.

I have Method Double Standards that are 17x8.5 0 offset/4.75 backspacing with Fox 2.5's and Falken AT3's in 285/70/17 with no rubbing. I did have to take off the mud flaps on the front wheel wells.
