Just bought a 2019 Tundra TRD 5.7L. Only has 400 miles on it. Today it started acting up on cold starts or after the truck sat for an hour or more. When you turn the key to start the truck it cranks and then you let go of the key, it will continue to crank for another 3-5 seconds before it starts. It has done it 3 times today now. Anyone have this happen to them.

Seems to be that the battery you get in the new Tundra's aren't so good. Get that battery checked asap at your dealer.....

Yep, probably battery. Those batteries sit forever before being placed in the truck.

The 2019 F-350 I have for work had the battery die in like it's 3rd week of use. Brand new truck, "brand new" battery. Went to get in the truck one morning and the key fob wouldn't even work.

It's the Crank-to-Start function operating as designed. Further information should be in your Owner's Manual.

Try letting the key sit in the "on" position for 5 to 10 seconds before cranking, so the fuel pump can build pressure. See if that helps.

Truck cranks strong, so not sure if its a battery issue. Tried leaving key on for a few seconds before cranking to see if it was a pressure issue.

It automatically cranks until it starts, for up to something like 30 seconds. It should touch on the matter in your manual

Unable to locate anywhere in the manual of a crank to start function. I've never heard of such a thing. I've been an auto tech for 20+ years now. I haven't been around anything brand-new in the past few years due to moving on to a second career in Public Safety.

Gm has been using crank to start for over ten years now. Everyone else is finally getting on the train including Toyota. All you have to do is touch the key to the start position and let go, it will automatically crank until the engine starts. Is this feature your concern? Or is your concern that it crank to long before starting?

Does it run ok after it starts? Is your vehicle equipped with the flex fuel 5.7?

I belive OP concern is it takes too long to start.

Yes the complaint is it will crank over too long. 3-5 seconds after it’s been sitting. It starts back up fine if it only sits for a short time ex. Pumping gas

It never did it again after that day. Went out the next morning and it was fine. Had dealer look at it while I had it in for something else and they said if it’s not doing it anymore don’t worry about it. Go figure

This is the way Toyota designed it. I have this in my 2018 and my 2010 I traded in. You just give it a quick twist and let go and it does the rest until it starts

I'm leaning towards a bad check valve in the fuel pump. That or you have a crank position sensor going bad and the the motor is starting on the cam sensor. Either way off to the dealer, it all should be under warranty.

Just throwing it out there but I had a similar situation. It would crank longer on an initial start up sometimes so my mechanic asked if I recently filled up at a new gas station. There was a new Shell station that had opened up ironically I had. He told me that at new gas stations they typically have more alcohol Volume in the first batch of gas which affects your truck at start up. Your trucks computer senses the additional alcohol and purges the system at start up which engages the longer start time. Sounds crazy I know

I had a similar experience with my '07, it turned out to be the fuel pump going out and a bad immobilizer chip in the ignition key.

This^^^^. Battery sounds healthy to do all that cranking, but that won't last maybe two years. When you took it in, the technician probably tweaked the flex fuel trims if you have flex fuel. The guy who turned your truck back to you knew he had looked at it, but probably didn't know or understand what he did, so he just said "if it’s not doing it anymore don’t worry about it". The bad news is the flex fuel trim problem has been known to return...kind of like shingles after chickenpox.

I had a similar experience and it turned out to be the key/immobilizer. Dealer reprogrammed all 4 keys and been good ever since. Just a thought.

Going to revive this thread. I just had the issue (long cranking before start) happen to me this morning. I have a 2019 with 21K miles. Truck sits outside and was around 20 degrees this morning. I'm going to check the battery when I get out of work. Also I need to research the Crank to Start function. I've never heard of that before

Try switching keys. That is what I did and when the other keys worked, did the reprogram with my dealer for free. Still no issues over a year later. Good luck.
