I've heard good things about Katadyn Base Camp, though jeez, you wouldn't know it by some of the Amazon reviews (just looked at them). I may eventually pick one up with further research. I know Randy Newberg uses it.

I have used the Katadyn Be Free Filters for trail running and hiking for over two years now. Probably have filtered 1000 liters and it works very well. They make a 3 liter version of the same filter for a base camp application. Pump style filters are gonna be better for very low flow or shallow water sources, but if you have decent streams, creeks, or lakes the Be Free will work well.

Flow rate on the Be Free is far superior to the Sawyer Squeeze in my experience.

With filters a lot comes down to usage. The Be Free is great for traveling light and fast but other filters may be better for other applications.

Thanks for the info, this will be for late Oct/early Nov hunting in the sierras, cold but there are streams in the back country. yes...next season. My friend had a tag in that zone this season and used the MSR pump (mini?). Says it worked fine. I'll probably go with that one, but may eventually also get the large gravity fed bladder

little late to the game, but ive used the katadyn and still do when we go camping. its done fine for what we need, but I also found a platypus bladder filter on sale and we started using it and now we cant live without it. it can filter a bunch of water without pumping and you can basically have a reserve of water in the upper bladder that you can filter later. one thing to pay attention to is the weather. it really sucks waking up and trying to filter water and end up locking up your filter because all the water froze in it haha. I know sleep with mine in my sleeping bag to prevent this. we primarily use the bladder, but I take the manual pump katadyn too just in case we get to our spot and the stream or water source wont allow you to scoop up water v

Personally, I hate using a filter.

I’ve had good success using a UV Steri-Pen.

It is lightweight and very easy to use.

If you're looking for something small for the back country I've used the Sawyer mini with great success. It comes with a collapsible bottle but fits on a platypus bottle as well.84719.jpg
