I was out camping over the weekend... We pulled up to a spot around 5pm and I turned off the truck and removed the keys from the ignition. Sometime around 10pm, I noticed a humming sound and isolated it to the gas-tank area. I gave it about 5-10min and it didn't shut off, so fearing a dead battery in the morning, I removed the battery leads. When I reconnected them, the pump stayed off.

Is this normal for the fuel pump to run like that HOURS after the vehicle was turned off and keys removed? I don't think that the pump ran the whole time... I think it came on a while after the keys were removed. Why?

I don't believe anyone has reported that on the forum. Hopefully someone will chime in with an answer.

Oh... and it could be something other than the fuel pump. Just isolated the sound to around the gas tank, so I assumed it was a fuel pump. could be something else in the same general location.

I believe this is totally normal. Both my wife’s Lexus and my Tundra do this about 5 hours after being shut off. Don’t hold me to it but I think it something to do with emissions.

My wife's 2019 4runner does it sometimes. I freaked out the first time i heard it. Same thing happened to me, about 3 hours after it had been parked in the garage, i went to take the trash out one nite and heard the humming. Sounded like a fuel pump running. I was like wtf?? Supposedly its a normal thing. New cars are weird.

When we first got my wife's Sienna, I noticed it and thought something was wrong. Called the dealer and they said it's totally normal. I haven't noticed it on my Tundra yet because I've only had it a month and I park outside lol.

Yeah, Coulda been the pressure test. It lasted at least 10 minutes. Long enough for me to hear it, find it, clear out my back seat to get to my tools (I was camping), pop the hood, loosen the bolt on the positive side, see it still won't budge and then do the negative side. That whole process took at least 10 minutes...
Maybe it was because I had a very low fuel tank? Took a long time to build up the pressure for the test?

Mine does this whenever I am camping. 5-10 minutes. Annoying as hell since I sleep under the topper when car camping. Pretty sure it contributes to killing my battery in the winter when I'm not driving much. Not anymore with a Group 31 under the hood!

Normal. Freaked me out the first time while I was smoking late at night in the garage. I started up my truck and turned it off.

Yeah, this happened on my 06 Tacoma all the time, still happens on my Tundra. I don't know the time frame, but I park my car by 7pm, I've heard it at 5:45 am in the morning. And yeah, I do hear it coming from back by the bed, right near the gas tank inlet, but towards the bottom center of the truck.

Maybe when you’re camping, pull the fuel pump fuse. That way you can still have your battery connected.

Not to revise an old topic but just came out to my truck and heard a humming from top of fuel tank. Truck has been parked for about 5 hours..... so I’m guessing nothing to worry about?

The evap year can be long or short depending on outside conditions. Perfectly normal. Don’t try and mess with the gs cap or anything, can set a light because it’ll think there’s a evap leak.

Same here, I have heard my truck do that a few times when I go out to the garage long often I parked it. I switch it on then back off and it stops. I can't see how this could be good for the fuel pump.

It isn’t the fuel pump, there is a vacuum pump on the charcoal canister that does a self test with the truck off after hours of sitting. It is to test the evap system that is all

Hello everyone. I’m new to the forum. Thanks for having me.

I wanted to report that I walked outside this morning around 0615 and I heard the same humming noise coming from my 2018 Tundra. Maybe the hot and humid environment triggered the evap. Same location as reported by others, right above the fuel tank. I shot some video before I read that it was a normal process. You can clearly hear the humming.

Thanks for all the great information.

Glad I stumbled across this thread. Wife called me while I was at work several weeks ago and said the truck was making this noise. Obviously had stopped by the time I got home. Now we know!

Good info! Just discovered my '16 doing this tonight when I had to walk to the garage for something. Never heard this on any other vehicle in my life. Crazy.
