Unless you build a pistol without $200 paperwork, (and your states req) 16" is as short as you can go no matter where you live.
Good luck leaving the asylum known as CA.

Sadly these are pinned at 10. But I took full advantage of "freedom week" here in California and bought several 40rounders.

I got a decent deal on the stripped lower from Palmetto State, and then grabbed other things when I found good deals on them for my second AR (300BlK). Bravo company has their upper (stripped BLEM) for $60 shipped with the forward assist and dust cover, check out Larue if you are looking for a 2 stage trigger that is ungodly solid, barrels will go on sale soon, then everything else is an each payday thing until you have all your stuff. I will never buy another complete rifle now. I like knowing how to put everything together for a better understanding of how it works.

IMO wait till you get where youre going...then look at a factory Ruger AR, enjoy shooting and figure it out from there...AR556 entry level are priced right, seen em for $499 at the right time of the year...

Colt is suspending sales until they can catch up with their federal orders...then will be back...but yes, probably why a little higher...for the time being...

The only Colt AR I want is an SP1 original from late 60s to mid 70s NIB. That prancing pony don't mean much to me anymore except for nostalgia. You can get those police M4s for about $1000. A lot of people like them. Primarily because it's got the prancing pony. An AR 15 is a truck gun and self defense rifle or a hog/varmint shooter. All this fancying up a poodle shooter tends is expensive. Learn to shoot A2 irons with a carry handle. I like retro

Don't buy into the colt BS. They are all Mil Spec. Buy a Palmetto state upper and lower and be done for less than $600. Colt Just Stopped Selling to the armed citizen call that what you want. I had a LE 6920 and my Palmetto shoots way better and is way less than half the price. Don't stick with the 556 either my 6.5 Grendel Palmetto 20" shoots a 123gr projectile in the AR15 platform sub MOA and has way more k/o power than any 556. Just my $0.02.... FWIW

I hear you. Unfortunately, my intro to ARs was with Uncle Sam's shot out SP-1s, likely Viet Nam leftovers, that were more of a spray/ exercise on the Qual. range in Reagan's US Army. The Colt 6920s and CSR-15s of today are leaps ahead in quality. The old SP-1s command quite a $$$ tag now.

Yep, the nice ones are getting up there. Let me qualify the statement. The only Colt I want is an SP-1, whether or not I would pay what they're going for is a whole nother kettle of fisho_O

Buy. You’ll probably have a sweeter gun if you build but if your like me you will spend more money on the nicer parts cause I spread it out

So happy I built mine, it was a great learning experience. It started off as a lightweight build then moved in to a long range predator gun.

I've done both. As stated, building will give you some confidence should you ever need to tear the gun down or replace any parts. I ended up building a PSA lower and Spikes Tactical mid-length upper in 5.56.

I've built 5 now. The first one was a 223 Wylde. I had only shot an AR once before building mine. They are addictive! I've built 3 223's, a 6.5 Grendel, and I'm waiting on a scope so I can get my 458 socom out.
Point is to anyone who isn't sure, building is easy. There are lots of videos on youtube showing how it's done. If you have a vise and a couple of punches you can get it done. The other tools just makes it easier.

Stumbled on this thread. I simply bought a moderate "shop" AR and threw some optics and other upgrades on it. I run it hard, no issues yet.

    Working on it!
I saw this post on a website a while back (paraphrased): Many people think they need a $3000 AR and $700 worth of ammo...when they actually need a $700 AR and $3000 worth of ammo!

I've owned a couple in the last years - my last purchase was a Windham HBC. Very impressed with the rifle - out of the box, the iron sights were about perfect. Only one click back put me in dead center.

Valid point. I'm retired, but work part time at a range and store and the money people throw is ... well..good for business.
I paid for the pro optic but honestly.. 150 bones for a charging handle? 2200 bucks for a DD upper? I guess the 1.5/2 MOA means everything. Lol

I am a trigger whore.. I'll pay for that.

I built my first AR back in 2014, i went all out on parts - billet lower w/flared mag well, Geissele SSA-E trigger, Vltor upper, Wilson combat NP3 coated BCG, noveske barrel w/custom machined dimpling, Aimpoint mico H1, noveske iron sites, BCM keymod rail, AAC suppressor. Spent around $3500 all total. 2nd AR i built for around $1200 including the tax stamp for an SBR lower
Both have the same trigger, but you can tell the quality difference of the rest of the parts when running them.
I can take my AR and hit the 6 & 8" steel targets at 300 yards with just the red dot, my friends cheapo $800 AR kit w/scope from Academy is inconsistent at 300 yards
    20140812_202220.jpg
Built AR on the left, M&P 22 on the right

Built all mine from the start. Takes some time to learn but once you do one you're a pro. It's good to know the insides and how it all works anyway. You can find a lower build guide online super easy. I like Palmetto State armory for lowers and parts kits. Good luck!
