Has anyone else noticed clunky shifting when doing slow stop and go traffic? Every few starts when doing stop and go traffic, I get a clunk in the transmission. Also seems like sometimes when taking off if I've been going slow, it downshifts way too far but maybe I'm just being too sensitive. Thoughts? I have a 2019 Crewmax Limited with 5.7 and towing package.

My 2010 does that sometimes when stopped at a light. It will downshift so hard it feels like someone hit me from behind. All my Chevys did the same thing though so I don't think there is anything to worry about.

I have a 2019 crewmax SR5 that I got in May that shifts the same way and was also curious. I didn't really notice it until it got close to 5k miles.

Rarely but it does occasionally get confused. Didnt someone mention in another thread that a mandatory update for our trans is in the works?

Hopefully the "update" is nothing like the new transmission programming that the brand new Super Duty's at work have. It's like the transmission is actively fighting with you...they're silky smooth shifting but you have to practically bury your boot into the floor to force it to downshift, even on grades. It does everything it can to stay in the highest gear possible.

My last unit was a 15 and it was fine, the new 19 has some very lethargic programming.

Having a super duty prior...I dont think anything Toyota has done is even in the same direction as Ford..good or bad. Lol

Mines a 16. Not too concerned.

I've had a few clunky shifts like this too. Because I recently downsized to one vehicle it stresses me out when it does it. I just hope that any problems it has are in the warranty period.

Mine has always been like that, I wouldn't worry about it. I believe Aisin makes our transmission (Toyota mostly owns them) and they make lots of heavy duty trans (when we looked at Rams at work the Aisin was the priciest optional trans).

My console shifter has always felt clunky, too. It's never been smooth moving it around like my wife's Highlander is, it always feels like it needs to be oiled or something but I don't know if you can oil the shifter. The ABS check feels like a clunk but it's not. And like I mentioned before it's always been weird making low speed turns in the neighborhood, often it surges a bit much but other Tundra dudes tell me theirs does the same so I guess it's normal. All of that stuff seems to be more pronounced before the trans has warmed up, too .

Honestly if I had to point out a dislike about the truck I would definitely say that the transmission seems very clunky and unrefined compared to the competition but it's also more reliable than the competition so I'll take clunky gears any day over transmission repairs.

My 2013 crew cab with the 4.7 and tow package has the exact same "features" as you describe. "Tundra character" I guess.

I just read somewhere that there's a couple of places to clean and lube the shifter so I may try that.

Does is it feel as though you had a "bump" after you came to a stop and then when you apply the throttle again it feels like the driveshaft is sliding backwards again?

On the older Tundra's you used to have to grease the slip joints so the driveshaft wouldn't stick. On my '16 it's not serviceable. Sometimes I feel it clunking, sometimes not. It seems to depend on how hard I brake or accelerate.

On another note, I am getting what feels like a transmission clunk in the 30-40mph range when decelerating or sometimes lightly accelerating. Not sure what that is.

My 2017 tacoma did this. I then got a tune and it fixed it. I believe it's the torque converter.

I was having hard shifting (clunk) from 1-2 gear both up shifting and down shifting. I greased up my drive shafts both front and rear and did a drain and fill on the transmission and went to test drive it afterwards and no clunk or hard shifting. It’s shifting like butter. So smooth and no clunking at all. I’m at 76000 miles. What a difference that made. Maybe do a drain and fill and see how it goes. My driveway is on an incline so I was able to get 4 quarts and 400 ml out. The hard fun part for me was pumping the trans fluid back in. I used a fluid pump from local auto parts store to fill up and a drain pan and measuring funnel to measure exactly what came out. Hope this helps. It’s easier than you think to do a drain and fill. Just get the metal crush rings from the dealer for the drain plugs.

Mine does it at 1-2 gear or when I let off the gas then get back on the gas. Seems like they all do it.

The downshifting into first gear during low speed turns in my neighborhood is really annoying. I have to baby the pedal or it wants to drop into first and roar away.

I wish there was a way to force it to stay in second unless you come to a full stop.

Mine does this too. Always in stop and go traffic. At times it has been significant enough where I've looked in the mirror to make sure I didn't just get a tap from the car behind. Seems to happen more often when on steep uphill incline.

I’m glad I found this thread. Sometimes mine really annoys the shit outta me. Turns out it’s normal. It shifts awesome when I flogg it, but sometimes the slow neighborhood shifting is schizophrenic and the delay into reverse or drive sometimes is annoying. Oh well. It’s under warranty.

    Function before sparkle.
I may be off base but this mostly sounds like standard axle wrap to me. Happens on every leaf spring vehicle. Not a transmission issue.

Same stuff here. 2019 trd pro. 17k miles. Also sometimes reverse into drive is almost delayed then the feeling is almost a hop or slight bump feeling.

same here. If I jump on it the tundra will glide through the gears but if I accelerate a little slower than usual it has a little bit of a clunk feel

I would agree mine is a little clunky but not GM clunky. This truck shifts so much better than the 2018 Silverado I had. Had trans issues at 40k miles and called for a total rebuild, sold it and never looked back.

Preach. Had an 18 Silverado as well that I traded with 36k on it due to trans issues. Thing would piss me off every time I drove with how bad it shifted
