Howdy yall, new member here and currently building an 2006 DBL cab SR5 4X4. I love the truck and decided to install the ICON leveling coilovers. the issue I'm having is the upper ball joints seem to be at an extreme angle. is this normal ? ICON.jpg

    Welcome!

    A couple of things

1: take a picture of your overall front suspension on that side from the front, seeing both arms.

    2. I see a lot of collar above the coil spring, it might be turned up way too high

    3. Welcome to the game :) you need new uca’s

Is this before or after getting an alignment done? If it's before the angle may get slightly better if you raised it less than 2-2.5".

Or like @Hbjeff said get new UCAs and you'll be good.

I wouldn’t waste money on alignment before getting uca’s. You’ll need another one after those

I've seen plenty of OEM uca's used with this kit. I cant be the only person who has this problem.

How much lift did you get? On stock arms I wouldnt recommend more than 2". Got a pick of the whole truck?

From that pic it looks like they are cranked up to high. You are bottomed out on the threads and the UCA is at an extreme angle as well. Like @Darkness said, 2" is the sweet spot on stock UCA's.

UCA angle doesn't look as bad in those pics. Do you know how much lift you got? Is the front end higher than the back?

If you keep it around 2" of lift(how the ICON's ship) you should be able to use your stock UCA's. Or so it's been reported here.

I'm at 2.5 lift currently I'm going to adjust it down after the tires are mounted and see how it changes the angle.

That should help. But either way, if those are old ball joints I would consider replacing them. Were those ICON's used? They do not look new.

The BJ's were replaced with Toyota units and the coilovers are rebuilt from icon.

That angle seems pretty harsh still, not as bad as the first pic but comparing the upper ballpoint to the pivot point on the arm there is still a big angle.

See how it goes when you lower the coilover and get aligned. I think the balljoint looks a bit odd as well, I dont recall having that much distance between my upper arm and spindle but it's been 9 years since I had fa story uppers.

Maybe save some cash and look for SPC arms on black Friday.

    LIFT 2.jpg

So this is the end result, the front is about half an inch too high but the stance is great IMO.

    LIFT.jpg LIFT 2.jpg

    LIFT.jpg

So it looks like the upper BJ angle is still sharp so I'm hoping after I adjust the coilover today the angle will correct.

Your upper control arm is touching your tire. I assume you saw that. Definitely crank those things down and let us know how it sits. The truck looks great though!

First off your truck looks fantastic, love a clean first gen! Like it’s been said you’ve got a ton of threads above the collar. I know on my second gen and my wife’s FJ the “max” threads above the collar is supposed to be around 2”. May look into going to a higher spring rate to get more lift with less adjustment. Those springs may be a bit tired.

I may be a bit biased but that truck looks killer!!! Is there a block or anything lifting the rear end? From that pic it looks level. Did you adjust the coils at all or did Icon send them back set up like that after they serviced them?

How is the ride with this heavy angle? Are we worried about high speed failure and potential crashes?

    TUNDY 1 .jpg

So I spent the weekend adjusting the coilovers they were maxed out so I took them down an inch and the ride improved instantly. After the truck as on the ground the gap between the upper BJ and tire is wider and he BJ itself is less positive cambered. TUNDY 3.jpg
All and all I like the way the truck sits but now I've gotten a weird brake pedal shudder at slow rolling stops.

Are you sure it's not the ABS kicking in at low speeds? I had that issue. Most likely caused by a damaged tone ring on the CV.

I replaced the CV axles when I did the ICONs, I'm also going to do a diff drop and see if that helps. I think the ABS ring being at an angle may have something to do with it.

Pull your ABS fuse and see if the problem continues. If it does then you know it's something else. In my case, after adding the ICON's I started having ABS activation at low speeds. I replaced the wheel speed sensor and that didn't fix it. Then another member mentioned it had to be my tone ring on the axle. I pulled the ABS fuses and the problem went away.
