I would like to remove it. Has anyone removed it? Pics? Plan would be to just push carpet down after removal. Would like space to store a few things under the seat and really dont like that it sticks out past the front of the seat.

This feature ranks high on my list of "stupid on purpose".

I've only seen it being cut out for ESP storage install. Not full removal that I can remember.

I think your idea is a good one. I don't know how your gonna get the carpet to look right though. Like you said the raised part sticks out in front of the seats. That part of the carpet will be loose when the foam is gone. maybe it can be stretched to look right. Not sure. I'll be watching this thread.

Hard to know exactly how it will look when done. The molded carpet layer is fairly stiff and formed, so it will retain much of the shape it has, which will look odd.
You may be able to use heat, steam, iron, etc... to reshape the carpet, but I don’t know if it can be done- you’d also have to do some precise trimming so it will fit correctly. Just “pushing the carpet down” is not likely to work.

I do agree though, that putting a thick layer of foam in a place that is ideal for storage is just a value-designed waste of space.

I have cut virtually all the foam out below the back seat. There is rectangle shaped tubes underneath for the seat supports. my plan is to cut those out as well. They seem pretty unnecessary after looking at it.

I will admit, it kinda looks like shit right now as I haven't replaced the carpet or put anything over the top. Was thinking more subs lol

    shitty pic below:

    Black carpeted/foam area
    Grey- seat supports/bars
Red- where I made the cuts.
Orange- the carpet folds towards the front of the truck. like this --> I___I_I

Could you contact Kaizen foam and get a precise custom cut piece of foam made with pvc plastic siding for rigidity? Maybe email him and see if that is a possibility.

We should all drive to Texas to Toyota and have them do it.

Stand in line at the gate and tell them to fix it or kill the engineer.

    Hand them a new rope.

My Tacoma had more stoarge space than an ant farm and I buy the flag ship of trucks and get a center console I can park an S-10 in

    Appreciate the tips and understanding.

The ESP/Husky under seat storage options are a no go with car seats. Access needs to be "normal"/from the front.

I am very disappointed with usability of the CM rear seat/cab configuration. IMO, the Double Cab uses the space more efficiently and you get a longer bed. Previous truck was a Gen 2 double cab. It was no picnic getting 3 car seats installed but once in, it was not bad. The CM is equally and much a PITA and maybe even more due to the under-seat foam. So much for "stepping up" to a CM. Lesson learned.

The under seat foam just tops off losing the dash cup holders, back of front middle seat cup holders, second glove box, front door storage boxes, headliner storage compartment, wallet compartment in dash, drivers side o-shit handle, and the space under the front passenger seat..... NVM the slide and recline rear seat.

At least the kept the pointless sliding rear window.

Toyota also managed to add a pointless lip to the door handle so my phone will no longer fit.

Really missing my old dbl cab work truck.....

Was very brand loyal but that is gone. Not done with Toyota but they will get fresh scrutiny next time.

    /Rant Over.

Next time I pull the car seats I will pull up the carpet and have a look.

@SullyMoto19, if you get a chance to post a few pics I would appreciate it. Your drawing is what I was envisioning my approach would be.

I gather a Gen2 rear seat swap is not possible :)

Interested to hear why you think the sliding glass window in the back is pointless? Do you not lower it for any reason?

IMO, a normal horizontal rear slider is sufficient and less expensive. With all the cost cutting, it seems like the rear window would have been on the chopping block vs all of the practical features Toyota cut. Hope the window or mechanism never breaks as I assume it is expensive to repair. NVM how much additional cab space it takes up. Would be nice to have more than 1/16" between the backrest and rear of cab (especially since the seats dont fold down).

With all 4 windows down, its more than enough air flow.

Toyota should have used the rear window engineering time/manufacturing cost to make the rear window button a rear locker button.

I have had my TRD Pro CrewMax since April and not opened the rear window once. It is too hot here to open windows. Maybe in October or if I have to haul long lumber. I agree it is one of the least needed aspects of this truck. A locker would be more useful.

I'm the opposite, I use my rear window every time I open my windows. I've never had a time I needed a locker. 4wd has always been enough to pull me out of anything I've ever been in. I'm not a hard core off-roader, but have been in some nasty mud and snow without a problem.

Here are a couple of pics I took if anyone is interested. Like I said, Im not done/haven't figured out what I want to put in the space. I plan to replace the carpet or put an entire box there (obviously it wont look this shitty forever). Also, I still plan on cutting out the supports. You can see in one of the photos that I started a cut on the middle one, but the damn saw-zaw was too big to complete the cut. These bars are held down to the floor board by a single bolt (pictured) but other than for support (and maybe a little structural integrity) I dont see a reason to keep them.

The foam cut out to the bottom of the seat is about 6 inches. My current vision is to raise the seats in and throw another full size sub box in there, but that's TBD. I will eventually remove the foam further towards the bed of the truck as well, but Im in no rush. Only thing that sits I the back seats is the doggo or golf clubs lol

For shits and gigs, I'll add this to my build page as well. lol

**PSA:Before anyone gets all snippy, I will keep this truck forever, so what I cut will not affect any future owners

Great pics. Thank you. Will check out your build thread. Please post more pics as you get it figured out. I am really curious how the mount compares to a Gen 2 and if a Gen 2 seat could be made to work.

Seeing what you have exposed under the carpet and foam, it makes me wonder how they install the long boxes? Does that installation also require cutting the rear seat supports?

Thanks for posting- there is a ton of room there, it’ll be interesting to see what you come up with.

I would doubt someone go through with cutting the supports out, just because its a little scary. I was so against cutting my truck when I first go it hahah now look at me! But hopefully I can figure something out soon. I really want to do a full size box in there with more subs. I may pull my buddies box out of his ford and see how it fits. Hes running 2 full size kicker 12s. The box tapers from 4" to 9" I believe. By my calculations and eyeballing ability, it should fit like a glove if I allow the taller portion to sit directly under the front of the seat, kinda where you put your feet. but TBD....

In the case of the ESP long box, the kit comes with part to replace those supports to open up the area for the box from what I can tell watching videos.

When I installed my ESP long box I removed the foam from the rear of the box to the rear wall and put the carpet back down in that area. To have enough carped I only cut the front edge instead ot the entire templet.

If you're looking to have the carpet lay properly. I would replace the carpet for a second gen carpet. Remove and paint or powder-coat riser rails This would give you the most factory look.

You have some choices. There are the long boxes as pictured, or you an get a 3-compartment.

I read on the website that if you have the remote start and a speaker behind the seat you can’t install the 3 compartment storage unit in the foam. Has anyone heard this?

    Welcome from Oregon, Craig!

Which website? I have not heard that, and it doesn’t make sense. The 3-compartment unit fits in front of the rearmost mounting brackets for the rear seat. Wiring, if it were an actual barrier could be re-routed.

I believe he is referring to the 2020 models. Many of us have the under seat storage installed without issues. The newer models have the new remote start.
