Would you consider switching to 2020 ram or eco-diesel turbo or 5.7 hemi? Just curious how many of you looking into new rams with very great options in technology and better gas mileage?

I am bit disappointed how far behind tundra is with many additional options but still love my tundra, not sure why but still after 3 years still in love.

Reason I'm asking since one of the coworkers give his 2018 tundra for new ram 1500 and I'm giving him hard time.

I will be waiting for most likely 2021 new tundra or 2022

Terrible reliability with the ED. 2 guys at our shop have them. One stubbornly holds onto his even though it spends weeks at a time in the shop. Right now he carries coolant in his car because it eats it and constantly overheats. The other traded his in for a Ram 5.7 last month after repeated failures. Additionally, you're not saving any money on fuel when you pay such a large premium for the Ecodiesel motor. You're just exchanging one expense for the other while sacrificing dependability, speed and horsepower. After repeated bragging from the annoying ED coworker he and I set down and penned out price per mile with respect to ED mpg (best case) vs the Tundra (worst case). It was 200k+ miles before you make up the premium. Your ecodiesel will not survive that long

Definitely agree with you, honestly I'm not going to switch for sure and will be member for many years to come on this great group forum. I'm tundra guy but honestly would be great getting some better technology at our new upcoming lineup hopefully soon.
Since gas is not that much I'm not worry unless gets to $4 bucks per gallon.

I've been paying about 4.20 for regular at Chevron :spending:
I know tons of happy Ram owners and some with older Rams that seem to hold up fine. We all have our preferences. However, the Ecodiesel is real pile of shit. Their 5.7 gets pretty good mpg's on the freeway because of the cylinder cutoff technology. A buddy of mine says he gets low twenties on the freeway, not bad.

I just don't trust dodge engineering team. Looks like many people have issues with 2019 and older. I don't think will be different with 2020

The new available options, along with the rowdy Hemi and smooth 8 speed, makes for a great truck. The new redesign should only get more reliable for the second year. If I was going to get a new 2020 truck, it would be a RAM (well, not including Raptor).

But I purposefully chose to get a used 18 Platinum that I already knew and accepted its tech and MPG limitations since I needed a truck as a stop gap until the redesigned Tundra comes out in a couple years. I didn't want to take a bath in depreciation and overall cost of ownership.

So if I were you, I would keep your current truck (beauty BTW) and save your money for the redesigned Tundra which will have all the new tech and features.

Thank you very much for your input. Agree with you on these. I love my tundra and would be definitely hard to get rid of for Ram. I did upgrade some technology as I put Kenwood 994s apple/android friendly unit. Headlights LED, lineX, running boards, bed cover, TRD wheels and tires, tinting, etc so not giving away mu tundra that easily

Not a chance in hell. I think I've mentioned it here before but The Woman's uncle is a sales manager at a Ram dealership. He flat out refuses to sell Ram trucks to people he knows personally. He says they're absolute junk, built as cheaply as possible and badly designed. According to him, reliability and longevity are barely even considered in the engineering process. Ram's modus operandi is to offer as much tech and flashiness as possible for the lowest price. He says his numbers show the average Ram owner buys a new truck every 4 years and Ram's are typically traded in before the 150,000KM point. There's a reason you can get 15 to 20k off sticker price of a new Ram and used ones are cheap like borscht.

I am only seeing eco diesel available on a 2019 “ram classic” that looks like the older body style. Am I missing something?

Ram sucks, I don't care how you dress it up. I prefer the less tech, more reliability of my Tundra. All that Ram tech is just aching to go wrong. No thanks.

Well, let's see. I've had my 2018 for 1 year and 10 months and it has 43,000 miles on it. All I've done is oil/filter every 10k miles and tire rotations every 5k miles. Oh, and a new air filter.

Only thing I have replaced is the battery (pre-emptive) since this is an acknowledged weak point.

That's it. I rarely open the hood and even then only because of the oil change. Love this Tundra more every day.

Just got back from a 3-day 500 mile road trip into the Sierra foothills and averaged 18.0 mpg. Not bad.

See way to many on the side of the road around here.
Not sure if it is the guys that drive them are hard on them or if they are shit but I never saw a Toyota on the side of the road unless you want to count me pulling over to piss once.

I did my rotors and pads just few weeks ago but with 28000 cam s started leaking and fixed with new seal under warranty. That was only my disappointments, other than that no issues so far.

Many years ago I owned a 2002 Dodge 2500 Diesel PU. Kept it until the drivetrain warranty ran out at 100K miles. That cummins engine was great and would pull like no tomorrow. BUT ... Dodge pickups with a diesel are PLAGUED with fuel related issues. Lift pumps are crap ... Injector Pumps are crap ... On and On....

Never own another one (Dodge that is). Keep the Tundra you will be much happier and sleep a lot better!!

Love the looks of the Ram. Love the toys (12" touchscreen!) Would rather buy the base model Toyota to the top of the line Ram. I want to get where I'm going. If I wanted to sit playing with toys while not moving, I'll play with my kids in their play room in the basement.

Perfect thread for me to give my 2 cents on: I was a Ram owner since '03. Had a '03 Ram Hemi 1500 that i traded in for a 2010 Ram Hemi 1500. Sold that to my father in law (who still drives it now with more than 180k problem free miles on it) and bought a 2015 Ram Ecodiesel. I just sold that and bought a Tundra. Why? That Ecodiesel is crap. Put 87k miles on it and i'll detail my issues:
    - replaced DEF sensor in exhaust at 50k miles (not covered by warranty) $700. While there, found EGR to be full of soot and clogged. $600 buck to clean.
    - 12, yes 12 recalls for things like tailgate lock malfunctions to airbag issues.
    - Frustration with the turbo lag for years.
    - After the recent flash from the class action emissions settlement, the truck almost killed me a few times. Pull onto the highway and the turbo would take 2-3 seconds to kick on leaving you free to get t-boned by passing traffic. According to Ram, the flash 'would not affect drive-ability at all'. Bull. Read the forums about this happening everywhere. Only solution? Tune it.
    - Bought the GDE tune ($700) to just drive a normal truck and it helped tremendously. Not long after, EPA banned tunes so no more service going forward.
    - Water leak into cab through rear brake light (common issue with them due to seal eroding).
    - Front bearings replaced at 70k miles (yes, that early).
    - Fast forward to August of this year, and traveling to New Mexico for a hunt. Transmission overheats to 280 degrees (was NOT hauling a trailer) after I spent 2k at a buddy of mine's awesome mechanic shop having transmission fluid replaced (not flushed), rear and front diff serviced, new fuel filter, etc. prior to the trip to prevent anything like this from happening.
    - i'm able to limp it home and it sits at the dealer for over a month. Dealing with the service department and Ram was awful. After all was said and done, they replaced the transmission, the transmission heating unit (where the problem was found and is apparently a big one with the EcoDiesels), water pump (it was leaking too), and a new battery because the dealer drained mine testing it on sight. had to fight like hell to get them to cover everything.

I was a Ram loyalist for 16 years. The Ecodiesel broke me. That engine is crap and Ram's response to people who bought them planning to drive the wheels off (like me) is ridiculous. I wouldn't touch one of those with a ten foot pole. Also, the savings are negligible. I had mine leveled with 34" tires and averaged about 20 combined. If you take Diesel costs at $2.80 on 15,000 miles a year, you're spending $2,100 per year on fuel. Not counting DEF fluid and more expensive oil changes (almost double). My new tundra (TRD PRO with 34" tires) may get combined 15. Same calc at $2.20 on gas gets you to $2,200 per year in fuel costs. DON't DO IT. Couldn't be happier with my Tundra. Wife drives a Land Cruiser and we're Toyota for life now.

screw their technology! its great when it works and then it will go south. GM, Ford and Fiat are all inferior products. The Chevy JD power commercials are a riot (example) very short term satisfaction on these products.
