Either dealer didn't put enough oil in or I am burning 2 quarts in 70 miles

I had my oil changed at the dealer. The next day checked my oil and it barely showed on the dipstick. 2 quarts low when I filled it to the proper mark. And, I am positioning the dipstick right, and waiting after running to measure. The dealer is 50 miles away. This worries me, but not as much as the fact that I have been having every oil change done at this dealer and noticed the same thing a couple other times. Not right away, after driving 2000 miles or so - Normal oil checking period. I have 30,000 miles on my 2016 Tundra, 5.7L. 1) Should I worry about what this did to my engine? 2) What is the best way to handle this with the dealer? 3) Is it possible I could burn 2 quarts in 50 miles with no blue smoke or major drips?

No. That would be a either a serious leak or very noticeable smoke.

I’m willing to bet if you check your oil again in 100 miles it will be fine. So you have a dealership issue, not an oil burner. Guess you need to check your fill after every change before you leave the dealership.

I highly doubt you did any damage to the engine, especially if you didn’t have a light on the dash alerting you to a problem.

I bet the person doing the oil change missed the fact these trucks take 8 qts.

I always check before driving if anyone other than me does the oil change. Even when I do it myself I''ll check it daily the first couple days. Oil paranoia lol. I'm sure your truck is fine Bob. I would call the dealership and let them know tho.
Found your tech, he got most of it in there.images.jpg

1.) Not until you add more oil. 2.) Through Toyota NA. 3.) Nope.

This is a GREAT clarification for me; Does Toyota void warranty for non-dealership oil changes?

Thanks guys. Here is a funny part to it: When I went in for the oil change I told them I must have used 2 quarts of oil in 400 miles on the last oil change they did, and that they should check for leaks. There were very slight signs of oil leakage around the timing cover, not enough to drip or spray. Because there was no other explanation for the missing oil (from the change before this), they scheduled me to come in to get the timing cover gasket replaced. Yes, I am calling the dealer about the missing oil, but now not sure if I should bother with the gasket replacement. Getting confusing.

Look up the Magnason Moss act. In short, the manufacturer must prove that whatever you did directly causes the failure. Burden of proof is on them.

When I buy a new vehicle, providing I keep it long enough, I have the dealer do the first few oil changes. I always check the oil level when I pick it up, and on many occasions have found it low. Acting dumb, I then go inside and ask the service manger to check it for me. On two occasions I got a strong apology and a free oil change. In my experience, the person doing oil changes in most dealerships, was last week delivering pizza. Buyer beware.

I question if they actually change the filter. I never even used my free oil changes. Since I drive so little, I change the oil once a year. So I get a peace of mind doing it myself. Gives me a chance to give it a once over. Although, I’m kind of strange, I’m that neighbor who you see always crawling under his truck doing nothing but looking at stuff.
I’d rather go to one of those easy lube places, because at least I can stand there and watch them. Keep an eye on them and make sure they’re opening fresh bottles of oil.

None of my neighbors ever look at their vehicles. It’s very sad and soft how our society has become.

Im constantly checking my wife’s tires, looking for nails, ensuring pressure is perfect. Checking fluids, ball joints etc. i check my tundra too. You never know what you’ll find

I always put an X with a sharp instrument across the top of the filter. I've had drinks with those who work in dealerships and independent oil change places where they brag about the various things they can do to screw customers. I absolutely agree with doing maintenance yourself if you're capable.

i worry too if my dealer is changing the oil filter with Toyota care so I've been at least marking the bolts on my skid plate each time so far looks like the tech is at least removing the plate i would think if they remove the plate they change the filter after Toyota care i will take to my service station they let me watch and bring in my own oil and filter been doing that with my 2015 taco

Would it be possible for someone to measure their dipstick? The dealer says I may have the wrong dipstick in the truck. 2016 5.7L tundra. I think just the metal part that goes down the tube would be best. Thanks!

Oh, and normally I would do oil changes myself. I have rebuilt everything from cars to trucks to airplanes to bobcats. But, my wife had cancer and did the slow goodbye - 2.5 years. Therefore, with other things on my mind I was making too many mistakes with other things and decided I should trust the dealer to do it right.

Huh. I did a quick Google search. There were many tundras that came from the mfr with short dipsticks. This would be a problem even if you changed your own oil or checked it after the dealer did it.

Is there more than one PN for dipsticks

This all sounds good but the Dealer can in fact deny repairs and you're SOL unless you want to lawyer up.

I had this happen on my '06 F-150. Cats failed before my aftermarket exhaust was bolted up. They stated because my exhaust was modded they wouldn't warranty the cats. I could have tried to fight it because the exhaust didn't cause the failure despite being bolted up to it. However, for the cost of the repair it just wasn't worth it. I would have paid more in defending my case.

So I wouldn't bank on just making that statement and a Dealer just doing repairs because of it.

    My experience.

Depends on how much fight you have in you I guess and if your dealer is a douche.

Well, the results are in. I have a very good dealer. The truck isn't leaking or burning the oil. At the full mark the truck has almost 10 quarts of oil, vs the 7.9 capacity. And, unlike the past events with other vehicles, the dipstick is the same length as other Tundras (per the dealer and my measurements). The dealer theorized that it was possible the oil check tube was too long, but that was an extreme long shot. Visual inspection and comparison kind of nixed that theory. They didn't know what was going on and Toyota NA was going to take a look at the truck to figure out where all that oil is. The dealer said that the extra 2 quarts of oil shouldn't have hurt the engine since it had such a large oil capacity anyways. Meanwhile, the dealer asked me if I was interested in a 2020 Tundra with the same package as my 2016. They were authorized to sell me one at cost and gave me a trade in value only 5k less than I paid for the truck 4 years ago. So, I pick up my 2020 Tundra next week, and my old truck will be the property of Toyota. If I get any more info I will post it here. As it stands, this appears to be some kind of anomaly that either no-one can explain, or don't want to explain to me, and will probably never occur again. Toyota and my dealer handled this very well in my opinion, and I have no complaints. Actually, I am pretty happy about how this worked out.
